Mate contains caffeine. The substance called versus mateine​is actually caffeine in older studies was mislabeled.

You're absolutely right: the most important thing about mate is that it's a link to other people, a way of connecting and spending time with friends, classmates or family. And you can drink it alone as well. Just remember one thing..you fill the mate with water, and that's a mate, the drink. The person who drinks it drinks all the water you filled the mate with. Then you fill it again with water, therefore prepare another mate (beverage), and you give it to the next person in the round.

It's the best you can drink. I know it does not taste so good at first specially if you drink it withuot sugar( that's the way to do it since whrn you put sugar on it you add the bad stuff to it.)

I used to drink my mate with honey, but now I drink it as is. Ever since I can remember I have been drinking mate, but now not as often. :)

My dad also adds orange zests or maybe some aloe vera.

My method is brewing it in a tea pot for about 5 mins, then i strain it using a nut milk bag. Though i must admit, the traditional way of drinking it looks so much cooler and I can imagine the first brew being very strong !

I just bought Yerba Mate, but I was wondering if it's really been linked to cancer of the throat. I was really excited to try it for the first time until I read "Yerba mate consumption has been associated with increased incidence of bladder, esophageal, oral, squamous cell of the head and neck, and lung cancer." If this was true then why would so many people drink it South America? It's so hard to distinguish what is true on the net. What benefits does it really have?

Before I gave up caffeine, I tried Yerba Mate and I didn't like it all that much. If there's going to be caffeine in it, I'd rather it be traditional Indian Chai! Now, however, I don't consume anything with caffeine, so my favorite tea is ginger with lemon.

yerba mate doesn't contain caffeine...

Most people think there's no caffeine in it because it was falsely advertised for a while as containing none. Do a Google search and you'll see that it actually does contain caffeine. It's a lot less than some teas, but it's still in there. Most people won't care, but for people like me it matters.
