  • I like this tape I made one the first try thank you

  • After I finish my second row, do I keep 3shells, ch2, 3shells, ch1? Or do I add more shells in each hole? Thanks!

  • @katlady137 You only have 3 double crochet in each hole, except for in the corners, you have 3 dc and chain 2, 3 dc.

  • Ive been wanting to learn how to crochet for years and finally just sat down and made my first square thanks to you!! You are a spectacular teacher and your videos are great!

  • THANK YOU!! im new to crochet and have been trying to teach myself via the internet with no luck. it was only when i watched your videos that i started to really get it. if you could suggest some beginner patterns and or books that would be great.

  • You are very knowledgeable! Thank you so much for this video. :)

  • Your videos are awesome. Questions: why do you have to turn the square over to start a new row? And what do you think of Red Heart yarn sold at Walmart? thanks!

  • @strawberryrhubarbpie Actually you do not HAVE to turn it over. When you finish your round and make your chain 3, that chain represents a double crochet stitch and it is positions on the left of the space where the shell is made. So to make it on the right of the space simply turn the piece over. Other methods have you not turn and slip stitch across the next two stitches before making that first chain-3. Or you can chain 4, and go to the next space with your shells.

  • @Bethintx1 finish by placing only two double crochet in that last space because the chain 3 will be the last dc in that space.

  • Thank you very much! This was a great tutorial! Although mine did not end up as a Granny 'Square' (more of a circle thing) I still managed to keep up with your speed! I only picked up the chrochet hooks this afternoon and was amazed at how good teaching can speed the learning! Thanks again!

  • I've made a couple granny squares with your tutorial. First, may I say, you're a fantastic teacher. Second, if I want to join these 2 together and, for some reason, they're not perfectly the same size (one got a little bigger than the other somehow) do I need to scrap that one and make one that is exactly the same in order to join them and make it look seamless? Thanks again for such a fantastic tutorial!!

  • @ThisGirlDoesItAll No. You can use the flat braid join method. It will be a lacy seam, but the loops in the flat braid will accommodate the difference in size. I use it for joining friendship squares all of the time. search my channel page for the video.

  • Thank you! Such a helpful video :)

  • thank you for refreshing my memory of crocheting! i learned the basics from my late mother when i was 11 years old. but i did not practice much on crocheting, just compliance with school projects. after being diagnose with breast cancer and had bone mets, i guess this will be a hobby i would love to learn again.

  • What hook brand is your favourite?

  • @NerdyCanadian My favorite so far is the Clover ergonomic hooks, secondly I like Susan Bates. I have not tried a myriad of other brands available.

  • @Bethintx1 Thank you.

  • Thank you so much for these videos! I started knowing absolutely nothing about crocheting, and this series helped me tremendously. After several not-so-great attempts, I can finally produce a consistent granny square! On to making enough for an afghan. Thanks again!

  • OMG..can you believe that I had to watch the video 10 times before I finally was able to make one decent looking square lmao..But thank you Bethintx..I searched many videos and yours is by far the best...Im a subscriber keep them coming..

  • @fabsardo You're not the only one! I know the dialogue by heart now but I'm still working on it..LOL

  • how do you know what hook to use with your yarn? i'm using a H size hook and the same kind of yarn you are using, but its looks like you can see your detail better.

and your videos are great! i've learned so much from watching yours!

  • @RachelMarie423 The yarn label has a recommendation. I generally like I or J hooks for medium worsted yarns and a G or H for number 3 soft, or sport or baby yarn.

  • @Bethintx1 okay, thank you!

  • your awesome!

  • I saved all your videos they are very good..but for some reason my squares still come out like circles lololol..ill just keep watching and practicing..Oh one question..why is it that on some you do two chains and then on chain?

  • @fabsardo The two chains are in order to turn the corner and the single chains are along the straight sides. Hope that helps! Maybe it will also help your squares become more square-ish?

  • This was awesome! Thank you so much.

  • You are doing a great job as a teacher. But, my granny square looks like a really pretty granny circle!

  • Thank you SO much for these lessons; I have been trying for days to get the granny square thing down. Your video was so much more helpful than anything else I've come across on the web. Your instructions are very clear and nice and slow and your video is great too.

  • i've seen people's afghans made out of granny squares and they are beautiful. all the shells are facing the same way, how can i make squares but without having to flip it over so my rounds aren't back front back?

  • @bunnykat There is a method of doing that. This was just easier for beginners. when your finish your round and make that joining slip stitch, slip stitch across the top of the next two double crochet. chain 3, then make 2 more double crochet in the chain space. Another way is: instead of slip stitching into the chain for a join, single crochet into it. That single crochet forms the first space. make 2 double crochet around the single crochet to make the first shell. search for other videos.

  • @Bethintx1 perhaps someday could you make a video for this? i am a bit confused by it.

  • @ourentropy I'm confused by your question. This is a video.

  • Thank you for your lesson. I am not a child learning but I am still a beginner and appreciate you going slow and explaining each and every move and stitch you you make. How would I do about 3 rounds and then switch colors???

  • @dobusiness100 That would look great! I have a video on changing colors. search my channel page.

  • Excellent !!!

  • love your video..I made my first granny square and it was a bit whompie, so I definitely need to go back and pause as I go along..But I really enjoy how you make the instructions so easy to follow...Look forward to seeing more of your videos.

  • Awesome videos! You have such a kind and patient way of teaching!

  • also I think its cute how she tells us to pause it if we can't keep up, it made me smile :P

  • Woo hoo i just made my first complete granny square, go me!!! thank you so much!!!

  • @Zerocreature Some of my viewers are 10 and some are mentally handicapped! Watch other videos on how to crochet granny squares if you do not like the way I do mine. No need to be rude. Maybe you should pay $60 for a DVD.

    Okay?! Okay.

  • THANKS! FOR THE TUT! AND YES I PAUSE PLAY PAUSE PLAY BECAUSE I AM A NEWBIE AND NOT A NOT IT ALL! @zerocreature get a clue!

  • By the end of this video, I was keeping up with you. ^^

I made my first granny square out of rainbow yarn, it looks awesome!

I can't wait to put it on my daughter's bed. XD

    Thank you so much.

  • @evenightingale1 Mines with rainbow yarn as well! (:

  • Ahh! I have watched this video 40000 times and I'm doing everything right (at least, I think I am) and my granny square just looks like a bunch of random doubles crochets, what am I doing wrong?!

  • Hi, Thank you so much for this series of videos. i have never crochet before, and I tried to follow the films 'by teresa' and found them impossible. Yours is simple and easy and I have a fab finished product that I am so proud of. Please can you put up some more granny square patterns?

  • Thanks for posting these! I learned how to do these years ago but forgot how. I recently found a blanket I had started but needed a refresher on how to finish it. I can't wait to check out your other videos. Thanks again for posting theses.

  • I did it Mrs. Beth, I made granny squares, can I make them bigger? And I have the a picture of the one I made on my Facebook page. I would love for you to see it. Thank you thank you and thank you. Did you get a chance to do different forms of granny squares yet? Can not wait for them.

  • @1975ccoleman I posted a new pattern recently. It's not necessarily for beginners, though. You can watch the video and give it a try. It's called Cornered hearts friendship square.

  • This is the best video to learn this that I have ever seen! Thanks you so much!

  • Hi, Mrs Beth I followed all three viedo's and my granny square looks like a star or a house. Help, What did I do wrong?

  • @1975ccoleman You have too many corners. Watch again & try again. It helps to watch the video through once, then watch, pause, then pick up your work and stitch resume watching. pause pick up your work and stitch. repeat!

  • I love this video..... I have been trying to do the granny square but you made it easy. thanks

  • thank you soo much for being soo understanding with your directions!!! i would've never gotten this without you!!! <3

  • Thank you so much for these videos. I've tried and failed to learn from books, and the only thing I could do was a chain stitch. I've finished my second row of a granny square, and though a bit lopsided since my first row's (I think) stitches were too tight, I still managed to find the right places to stitch. The video about the paperclip was also immensely helpful! THANK YOU! :)

  • What's the best size yarn to use when doing a granny square? I'm using a medium size from red heart & my granny square looks a little larger.

  • @purplesmurrrf That is what I'm using in the demo. You can use any yarn you like for granny squares, I suggest using a hook size that is recommended on the yarn label. Red Heart Super Saver Medium Worsted weight yarn recommends an I/9 or 5.5mm crochet hook. The larger your hook the looser your stitches should be, so the drape will be softer. But if you use a smaller hook, the fabric will be a little stiffer. So choose what you need for your project.

  • is "yarn over" the same movement as "draw the loop"? I have watched it over and over and my brain just can't decide ha!

  • @kittyb2113 Yarn over, then insert the hook. catch the yarn (when catching the yarn it's the same movement as a yarn over.) draw up a loop. (meaning pull that caught loop through the work or stitch.) Does that help?

  • @Bethintx1 yes thanks!

  • thanks, these are great! But how do we finish off the granny square? ie make it safe to cut the wool? And is there a video of joining the granny squares together? Thanks again these videos are so much better than any others i have found!

  • @ellesbells9 Yes. Go to my channel page my clicking my username. You can type it in the search bar.

"Finishing Your Crochet Project" is the title of the video for the first part of your querey.

"Joining Squares" is another short series I made. There are several choices. This should answer the second part of your question.

  • thanks for these videos! im 13 and have been trying to learn for a while now, and this has really helped!

  • Thanks so much for these videos!! This has been really helpful :-)

  • How many chains should I do to make a granny square? or does it depend on the pattern?

  • @nadaibrahim77 I usually chain 4, then slip stitch to make a ring. or you can use the magic circle. Some patterns require more chains.

  • @Bethintx1 Thanks so much. I believe I will find how to make the magic circle somewhere in your lessons, right?

  • @nadaibrahim77 I think so... let me see if I can find exactly which video.

  • @nadaibrahim77 The video called "Back to Basics Crochet: Make a flat circle with single crochet" has the how to make a magic circle at the beginning of the video.

  • Thank you so much. I've tried reading books but your videos have really made crochet make sense to me! I'm going to the wool shop now!

  • Thank you for showing me this, my granny square do not turn out quite like yours did? I'm a stay at home mother of 3 children and I always tell them never give up just keep trying, and that's what I am going to do. Do you have were you can learn to make flowers? ( I hope you do)

  • @1975ccoleman I have a tutorial on roses.

  • @1975ccoleman go to my channel page by clicking on my user name. The in the search bar on the uploads page type "roses". You should be able to find them.

  • Hi! Can you use this granny square pattern for a beret? Like, it starts out as a granny square for about 3 or 4 layers then you make it round on the 5th layer? Thanks!

  • @KetoneKay I have a pattern here somewhere...You make a piece like a granny square, but make your starting chain with six chains, then make your loop. begin with 6 shells, then make it like the granny square, but hexagon shaped...I'll have to add it to my list of videos to make.

  • I'm actually an experienced crocheter because of you. I learned how to crochet a beret from you and it was my first project! Believe it or not, I didn't know how to do a granny square and because of you, I learned how and now I can make a baby blanket for my cousin!! Thank you so much, you're awesome, I've told everyone how great you are!!

  • I know one thing: if you don't know how to do a double crochet, Bethintx will definitely etch it in your mind. When I first learned, I kept hearing- "yarn over, draw thru the loop, yarn over....!" sometimes if i watch her videos, I forget that I already know how to double crochet, because I'm in a trance listening to her say- "yarn over, draw thru the loop, yarn over!" I love her though. She'll teach you the right way!

  • @bcdshorty LOL! Good!

  • @bcdshorty- another twitter worthy quote by bethinx-"im an american, so i use american terms! classic! ha ha ha.

  • @chinadoll401 Not yet...but it is on my list!

  • Thanks very much for illustrating how to draw up the loops and exactly where to insert the hook for joining the round - wish I had these videos when I was just learning to crochet!

You're the 2nd person I've heard say that the only stupid questions are the ones left unasked. The other was an excellent teacher too! He made Maths enjoyable as you have made the Granny Square suddenly simple! Cheers. ^_^

  • The chain 3 = the first double crochet of the new round. 3 chains are as tall as 1 double crochet. 2 chains would be too short and look uneven. Experiment and see.

Pause the video at 4 seconds in - you can see the 1st 3 chain under her hook. I think turning the piece twists the turning chain so that it looks more like the double crochet stitches.

Turning the piece on each round makes the piece looks similar on both sides - reversibility - she says at the end. :)

  • out of all the crochet viedos on UTUBE you are the best cause you go nice and slow... i learn so much from you ty for showing me how to crochet!

  • why do you have to turn it over to the wrong side? then chain 3
