Hey Matt, I'm a big fan. But don't you think this video shows Apple being cheap? It seems like iMovie is almost identical to Final Cut Pro X. I'm not an apple fanboy, and definitely don't think everything they make is great, but don't you think this video makes it seem like you shouldn't buy Final Cut Pro?
i have final cut express but prefer to use iMovie final cut express is good but for that i doing iMovie is better because is just so better for the eyes and so easier i use final cut express to edit movies i make with my friends
The video was good, but I didn't like the way you degraded iMovie. I am very much looking forward to using that application, I have been drooling over it for quite some time and I don't want anyone spoiling saying, "ooh it's nothing special".
@MattsMacintosh Well that's not what I quite deduced. Oh well, my mistake. iMovie rules, can't wait to get snow leopard so i can finally gain access to ilife 11!
Firstly, great videos Sir. Been favouriting a few of yours now.
Does FCPX have a vertical precision bar/line that you can drag where you want it or as opposed to iMovie seemingly making me have to manually click with the mouse to where I want to be? Sorry, I'm new to macs/iMovie and am considering FCPX.
Also, I know FC imports iMovie projects, but is that in full editable form, complete with all of your title sequences you worked so hard to create and can't quite ever repeat the same?
@MattsMacintosh can I use iMovie to create flash animations? I know you done that magical magic trackpad animation, but I was wondering if it is any better than Macromedia Flash. I love Macromedia Flash a few months ago when was in school, and used my school product code for activating it, but that is long lost now, that is ever since I had to restore my netbook.
I would be more than happy to buy Macromedia Flash, but it is windows only, and although I have xp in parallels desktop, I want to t
Yeah, I was scratching my head a lot watching the audience's reaction to Final Cut Pro X; I kept thinking, "But I've been doing that in iMovie for two years now..."
Great video, but what do you think would be a better choice for video editing, Final Cut X or iMove '11? I am currently using iMovie '11 and I love it, but I am not sure if i can be impressed with the upgrade to final cut x. If you have seen any of my videos, they are not extremely professional but are slowly getting better in depth with editing. My camera isn't great but I will soon upgrade to a better HD one. So Matt, for a small Tech reviewer with an ok camera which software would be better?
To make the audio detachment easier, hold down command and select all the clips you want the audio to be detached from. Then detach it, and it will all happen at the same time! :D
Matt, thanks. They only thing I miss in iMovie11 is the possibility to add more than 1 effect to a clip, such as Vignette + Hard Light or one of the other video effects. Any solution for this?
Cool tips. Unfortunately, i can't use 'em. I had to downgrade back to iMovie '09....bcuz my cursor kept lagging in the project window in iMovie '11. Even the Apple Genius Bar couldn't figure out the problem.
@TheHDGeek I got it.. He has a 27 inch Apple Cinema display, which has 2560x1440 pixels! I looked at your channel, and you've a 27 inch 1920x1080 screen :D
@Wiejeben You're wrong mate. I have never changed my resolution. It has always been 2560x1440. The reason that makes me think it's screen is bigger is the hidden dock.
Wow really clever Matt! I did not know about the keywords at all or the thing that makes the clips all together on one line. By the way, you can also make the audio appear without right clicking each clip by clicking the tiny button that looks like audio wave forms next to the final clip's display (which is next to a slider) :)
@MattsMacintosh I know you're super busy, but please make some time for a tutorial on that Magic Bullets plug-in with which you made an extremely pro video of your parents house.
I did this with iMovie 09 it worked well. I have to use iMovie 09 because I use a PowerMac G5. I am very upset with Apple discontuing Final Cut and iMovie 11 for the PowerPC.
Personally, I think iMovie is OK. I'm used to the format of Premiere Pro, so it's like a backwards step in my brain. Still, it's a good product that works well.
You just made my imovie experience more amazing!!! :D I have final cut express but am still using imovie. I don't have enough patients to sit down and try to learn final cut. lol one day.
Oh how ive always hated iMovie for it's layout. Thanks Matt! Haha I'm personally using premiere, but this video would give me a reason to use iMovie haha
Awesome video Matt. I can't wait for the new Final Cut X to come out. Its gonna be the best of both iMovie and Final Cut together. Every YouTuber and Editors dream. :-)
@iMactheIphone Not to mention the price they'll be selling it for! I wonder how much the Studio will be? Assuming they continue with the Studio bundle of course. I hope they do. I see no reason for them not to. It'd be awesome to see the kind of polish they put into FCPX into the rest of the suite. I'd love to see the same devotion given to Logic Studio too in the future!
Something that people don't realize is that iMovie '11 was given a lot functions that really appeal more to Final Cut users, and that it really can be a powerful video editor. I am by no means saying it is a replacement for Final Cut, I am just saying that there are indefinitely some tools there are way above the standards of iMovie. Great job Matt for pointing just some of these things out.
As soon as I started using Final Cut Express, I realised that iMovie, just isn't good enough and thought I'd use it only for smaller things. So I had something small to do, but got frustrated over it and decided to do it on Final Cut instead.
Now whenever I look at iMovie, it kinda makes me feel angry. The features of FCPX sound good, but the look makes me feel like a bit of a n00b.
I might just upgrade to FCS before they discontinue it.
@guidobertisch2 I probably should have mention that in the video (sorry about that). Just select the clip you want to add the keyword to, then click the button in the center with the key on it.
Awesome tips! Not really in to mimicking Final Cut Pro, but some of these tips (like thumbnails and tags for videos) should really improve my workflow. Thanks!
I've unkowingly had iMovie 11 set up like Final Cut for a while now... -__- Hahah, great video Matt! Are you going to be doing a new "My Home" video once you get settled into your new place?
Presuming that Final Cut Pro X is able to do pretty much everything Final Cut Pro 7 can, would you say that it is worth the upgrade for the extra control and/or features? As somebody who made the upgrade from iMovie to Final Cut Pro, why did you decide to change editing programs?
@LeonNLK I would say it is only worth it if you have an interest in more advanced features like plug-ins, color grading, pro level codecs, etc. For most people it probably wouldn't be need, but for someone like me that spends a lot of time editing the added flexible is definitely worth it.
@TonyMProductions They are for two different things. Final Cut is for editing, After Effects is for effects. I use them both. I would say they both require an equal amount of skill.
I already had my iMovie 11 layout exactly like this haha. Easier to edit with, but still, really hate iMovie. All the scrolling is annoying and the option screens always get in the way as well.
