Love Tommy Flanagan: underrated is an understatement. This piano duo is a delight and is like eating sugar, honey and candy. Wonder when was this footage taken
@Bgoods91 One man's Albert Ayler is another's Kenny G. Listening to music is a completely subjective experience. Some people hear Jazz, others don't. If someone is willing to keep listening, eventually they hear it. But some people don't want to make that commitment. They prefer instant gratification.
@lblmer i understand the analogy still i can't help but flame when hearing comparisons of tommy flanagan to Kenny G. Bird's music calls to be played in a certain way and tommy's playing in that style. However there is so much more he's doing then every other average joe that play's this song. he's in complete control never losing the melody just making things sound as sweet as could be.
Tommy Flanagan recorded something years ago called, "The Intimacy of The Blues" that I worked at and copied as a young guy, and it was beyond cool. Nothing super-complex by most standards, but just plain cool. I still dust it off and play with it a little (the tune, that is, the old album is long gone) and it always calms me down and "calibrates" me. It's in Eb ...so NOT Rock & Roll (or whatever)...not that I don't like lots of R & R. The late Tommy F. - what an ace! (and treasued accompanist).
Billy Taylor is happy just because he hadn´t the trouble to meet face to face on his TV show with the great OSCAR PETERSON, who could beat him with a single hand, or Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Michel Petrucciani, Rubalcaba, Michel Camilo, or Bill Evans. He invited only people that he could defy and being well.
@Borgrimder In fact - check out the video here on YouTube called Hank Jones on Bebop - he talks about how Bird's solo on How High the Moon eventually became the theme for Ornithology.
@Borgrimder This is actually not true Bird did some substitutions in some places yet if u played moon chords while someone solo'd birds chnges it would still sound good and make sence in a theoretical way
Oh, how wouldn´t I pay to see Billy Taylor and OSCAR PETERSON on these duos, ajajajajaj, and what about Billy Taylor and Bill Evans, or Chick Corea...or even Herbie Hancock...
You sir made my day. Thanks JazzVideoGuy for sharing, thanks Mr. Flanagan and Taylor.

This is not enjoyable. Almost sounds like scales. Not musical to me.

You gotta admire Tommy's smooth transition from The Peanut Vendor at 4:48 to the Ornithology theme three seconds later.

that's not the first peanut vendor quote i've heard whilst watching these billy taylor videos - he obviously liked his peanuts!

I never thought of Tommy as underrated as a result of performing for Ella. Actually was more mad at him passing than Norman Granz. the same year.
