As the owner of 2 30-06 deer rifles, all I can think of when I watch this video is that ammo must have cost a shit ton! Awesome video though, the 1917 is very cool indeed.
great video, also that gun appears to have all of her WW1 configuration intact from the WW1 rear sight, topcover pin, pivot pin, and I did not even see a reinforcing stirrup. Does she also still have the WW1 backplate with trigger lock intact?
It's fun to watch these videos. It's from a totally different world (live in the EU, only really hunting weapons allowed here) so it's a wonderful chance I get to see your weapons (or arsenal) in actual action. I have commented this before on many of your videos, but thanks for taking your time to make and upload these videos!
@sniperintheboat44 Actually Browning himself developed the M1917 Browning differently from the Maxim principle - the only similarity to the Maxim was are the recoil operation, T-slot breechblock, water cooling, and forward ejection. Otherwise the Browning M1917 did not involve the toggle locking mechanism and was lighter + simpler than the Maxim gun.
@theclash181 By the way, when the army tested this they fired one for 48 minutes straight, or 21,000 thousand rounds, it didn't overheat as long as you kept water in the jacket. This thing has reliability records that have not been met or beat yet in its' class. One of the best machine guns of all time, Browning 1919 has the same mechanism.
Yet my passion goes to my 8 bolt action rifles of WW2 and before (Finnish and russian nagant, K31, 2 M95's stutzen, Carcano's, Swedish mauser, berthier)
And watching video's of epic M1917 browning MG, Maxim MG's, Russian Maxims and any gun before the 1960...
Strange how a lot of people own fully automatic firearms but we never hear of petty criminals using them for mischief... Could the media be wrong about gun control!!!!
@terrask those who abuse guns often own them illegally from the beginning. most criminals get a record before they get the chance to buy a gun legally, so i dont think liberal gun laws are the problem :P
Given the difference in sight radius between this and the M1919, which was more combat effective? Was the M1919's front sight placed on the receiver merely because there was nowhere else to place it, or was it to reduce the sight radius for faster target acquisition?
Poles were producing their own version of browning m1917 heavy machine gun, its called ckm wz.30. Different caliber, tripod, sights, longer barell, additional AA sights, additional butstock for AA fire and few more things. Polish browning was slightly more relieble than its predecesorr beacuse it composed less parts so it was less keen to jam. Very good piece of weaponry, loved by polish troops.
my grandfather ran one in korea. he said they were heavy, and they used to have to piss in them sometimes. idk if it was to cool them down or if they leaked fluid. he didn't say much about korea.
I have to say that first I envy you in a good way. I live in the USA and am in a state that allows ownership of full auto weapons. What lisences do I need to purchase and approx. how much would they cost? I appreciate any help
@engaurd No myth. As long as you have cool water in the jacket surrounding the barrel you can shoot all day. You would have to lubricate the internals every now and then but that takes what....1 minute?
My granduncle Pfc. Quinten G. Nelson of I Company 3/6 2nd Marine Division was a gunner manning a Heavy Browning M1917A1 MGN on Saipan, Marianas Islands June 16, 1944. He was awarded the Navy Cross & 2 Purple Heart Medals I can only imagine the destruction he inflicted upon the enemy in 1hour & 30 minutes of action time before being wounded by a enemy hand grenade & heavy enemy rifle fire & evacuated.
how much do you sell these for? i have contacted another builder and he sent me a video of one of his but it kept jamming, your looks very good and i would be interested in buying one if you are still selling them
@killa123211 I don't sell anything unless it works 100%. The price of a registered Browning 1917 is around $17,000US, if you are a NFA or Class 3 Dealers the price of a Post '86 sales sample is $3,000US.
My uncle was a Marine in WW2 with the 2nd Marine Division at Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, & Tinian. He was a Heavy Machine Gun Crewman and was awarded the Navy Cross & two Purple Hearts for actions on Saipan, Marianas Islands June 16, 1944.
Excellent video! Very nice to see one in working full auto condition. I've been in concact with a vet from the 94th Inf Div. who carried around a M1917 in 1945. He said the only problem he had with it was that the water jacket was an easy target for shrapnel damage.
I always thought that muzzle flash would handicap the aiming over iron sights, but it doesnt seem to be a problem to keep looking trough sights while firing full auto.
@peicemakerSS22, I can see now that it wasn't that hard for the Marines on Iwo Jima to carry these guns into a assault attack, they are not that heavy and the weight soaks up alot of the recoil. Very managable.
@krinkovfullauto, yes the barrel moving is the recoil action pushing the bolt backwards, removing the next round from the cloth belt then to be inserted into the chamber while also ejecting the previous empty case through the bottom of the gun.
Strange thing about guns (and probably the most interesting) is that some of them look so good and works so perfectly you'll forget it was made to do the dirtiest of the jobs available.

Lovely gun that one, thats some fairly smoky ammo your using there, mil surp? Bulgarian? LOL,its a shame someone bent the windage adjuster spindle on the rear site,I suppose if you try and straighten it it will fracture, unless you strip and heat it at the bend gently and strighten it.Did you have the water jacket filled when you were test firing this gun?
Yes the spindle is slightly bent but it doesn't bother the movement so I will leave it alone. The ammo was Greek and has always worked well for me. Yes, the jacket was filled to the proper level during testing. I'm very pleased with this gun and will probrably keep it for some time.
Brilliant! Awesome work firing free hand! You MUST be a big bastard to be able to hang onto it and manage the recoil so easily. I'm liking Texas more and more!
It's not that bad Ted, with the weight of 33 lbs + the weight of the water in the front jacket it's very mild. Even a frail little Kiwi could handle it! LOL.
A very nice gun, I like the distinctive rattle effect :)
Say, is the barrel an original or refurbished? If so, how many rounds would you say this barrel could take before it gets worn to the point the rifling is ineffective?
The barrel I'm using in the video is a new condition spare so I could check the gun's accurancy. The life of a MG barrel really depends on how well the barrel was serviced and cleaned during it's use.
