Have you tried a gluten and milk free diet? That supposed to help. I heard that self injury caused by yeast overgrouth. However I could be wrong. It is painful to watch. All the best.
You are an amazing person and fantastic loving mum. You are a great inspiration to me. I too know what it is like to have to restrain my autisic son from head butting walls, furniture, the floor, etc and he is only 11 years old. Your arms and legs feel like jelly afterwards and you feel you have no strength left. Keep holding onto hope.
I appluad how you treated your son. I have seen it where my clients parents beat him infront us. Child Services were called and everything. often times with some people I worked with The parents blamed us for thier childs SIBs like we trigger it purposefully to just annoy them, he would have months where he would have little to no SIBs then he would have HUGE SIBs for about a week straight but seeing how you dealt with him with love and care and understanding really touched me.
@CDFOAKLEY YOU are a VERY SPECIAL MUM & family. Only YOU have to endure the 24/7 suffering, pain & energy consuming symptom. PLEASE HUG your son from me & tell him WE ALL love him dearly. Autistic kids are a gift to VERY SPECIAL parents not all can handle the endless heartache you & the family are going through. It's hard work bringing up any child but when they're autistic or the the like then it is 100 fold as hard.
My heart, love & respects are heading your way from London.x
I absolutely applaud you for these videos. It can't be easy to share your pain with the world but I think it's a very positive thing for people to see the daily reality of severe autism. I have some limited experience working with children and teenagers who have autism and I know that they were all beautiful people feeling a lot of confusion and overwhelming distress. I just want you to know that there are people out there in the world (even from New Zealand like me) who care. xox
I know what it's like dealing with this type of self injurious behavior. My couisn does the extact same things that Jamie does. I help out my aunt as much as i can cause my couisn's father doesn't help at all. So my aunt doesn't have anyone to help her besides me. I hate that some people come to conclusions without knowing the whole story. I will pray for Jamie and your family everynight like i do my couisn and aunt. You are a very strong women. It takes a lot of courage to deal with this
Hippocratic oath= I swear by Apollo the healer & take witness to all other gods that I will NEVER EVER harm anyone in practice of medicine.. Now- where's the baby in 4 healthy baby visit? Hush little baby, don't U cry, Doc's gona inject U with formaldehyde. If that poison don't keep U sick, Doc's gona try another trick.. (Also includes aborted fetal tissue & aluminum in witch's brew) English word "Pharmacy" comes from Greek "Pharmakeia means witchcraft, poison, sorcery. Things remain same
your family is doing an awesome job in a challenging situation. i know your other kids benefit from their brother's existence, as their compassion, understanding and wisdom will far exceed what it would've been had he not been born. i want all the best for all of you! much love.
I have a daughter who is almost 6, and she is going through the same thing. We are trying medication to see if it will help. My heart is with you. The other day, I felt like giving up. Seeing this video shows me that I can't, and that I am not alone in this uphill battle. They are all special, and we are the ones who can be their guardian angels!! Love, prayers, and hugs to you and your family <3
(Cont)...and it is good you post these videos. From the least affected person (my autism is rather mild, my blindness is not) to the most (a boy with CP, downs syndrome and autism and heairng impairment) we are all different all unique. Thank goodness Jamie has you and and thank G-d you are willing to share you and James's story with the world. Maybe it will make people more tolerant of anyone who is different which is a lesson much of the world needs!
I cannot see these. I have an aide that explains what happens in them. What is obvious, even to me, is that Jamie feels loved and feels that he matters. In all the world, that is the greatest gift you can give Jamie and that G-d gave you the gift of patience is a blessing. We learn from everyone around us and Jamie can teach those around him many lessons. I have high functioning autism but I live in a residential school for people with many different kind of disabilities...
How many people live with this severely disruptive person? How fair is to you, your family, that everybody has to suffer and "live in torture" (your words) because of one person's severe disability? You refuse to give up on him, but it feels like your constant attention to him isn't fair to others in your family. My opinion doesn't matter, but I don't understand your priorities in life. Your sacrifice isn''t praiseworthy if the whole family suffers, and they do.
@Clickgirl Yes, it can be torture, but my other children have also learned to be tolerant, compassionate, strong advocates for those who are bullied are abuse and have learned so much from the pain and suffering around them. Moreover, there are many videos on this channel that show the beautiful sides of autism. I show both sides because they are REAL. My kids are strong. Very strong people because of their severely autistic brother.
@Clickgirl Your comment on this video is so disturbing to me, This family goes threw great lengths to keep the family together be cause they love their son unlike other people who will give a family member over to the state because they don't want to "deal with it". They strive very hard to help address behavior concerns they have. What is wrong with you, you MUST not have a child that is autistic im guessing. And what blows my mind is the kind response you got that you did not deserve.
@Clickgirl WoW... what a catogorization! I thought she said her son was Severely Autistic. Not a "severely disruptive person". All the videos that I have seen are indicative of the entire FAMILY coming together to assist. And, THAT IMO is PRAISEWORTHY!!! Everyone is not so selfish in this world so as to institutionalize a relative at the first sign he or she might be a "disruption" to the lives of others in the household. I'm flabbergasted by your candor, demonstrative of self-centeredness. IJS
I say euthanation is the best cure. I believe we should start to think logically and use painless death to terminate suuch a useless misery and painful existence. Fuk god if there is one. he is such a bitch.
@ZaphedBeebleBrox It seems you are in more misery and living a painful existence than any autistic person has ever known. Perhaps you have not seen the many faces of my son and others with severe autism? Many have horrible days, only to turn around, with help from others who love and care about them, and have better days. It's about love, caring and sacrifice. Autism is not a death sentence, no matter how severe.
Poor guy, please please google Carly Fleishmann. She is a severely autistic girl who started to type at age 11. It will make you cry. She says it feels like ants are biting her skin so she has behaviors. I think her parents found something that helps, because her recent videos have a lot less of the behaviors. Maybe you could email them and ask...it might help.
this is a very hard video to watch,i have a 7 year old autistic daughter that is for the most part non verbal and hits herself in the head and hits her head on the wall.i understand the helpless felling you have and i think you are a great mom for taking care of your son he is lucky to have you!!!!!!!
I have 4 kids. My son is 9 and people don't understand that he is autistic with. Mental Retardation. They think that we as parents should be like super mom or dad. I do not have the luxury of having another adult to help me. I am always replacing windows, doors, locks, alarms, so on and so forth can't even hang things on the wall. From another parent who deals with this and is very sleep deprived on a daily basis. Thank you.. Clothes or not it's educational for some who don't judge..Bless y'all
@chevygirl1092002 autistic and mentally retarded? I never pair these together unless the child with autism also has fragile x or some other syndrome that impairs intellect. I believe many severely to profoundly autistic people are way smarter than we think. They just can't show us on conventional testing so they get labeled mentally retarded. For all we know, they've memorized the world around them. Just a bit of encouragement for you! Hope you get some sleep. I hate being tired!
MY heart breaks for you and I admire your courage and tenacity, keeping your son home with you instead of an institution. Your other children are heroes and will grow up to be very sensitive individuals. I don't hear a husband on the scene so if you are single with all of this may God help you through and reward you for your perseverance and abundant love.
maybe you should have been thought about putting pants on him first for his own privacy? also, have you even thought about "gators" ? they are stiff, full arm sleeves that keep your child's arms straight out so they cannot harm themself. I work with a self abusive child and that's what we use, if the child tries to take them off, we put a sweater on the child...BUT they are not to be used 24/7, they should only be put on for about 30 minutes, whenever the child has an self abuse episode..
@kylaurable Never heard of "gators". Will check it out. As for the diaper, it seems some people are freaked out by seeing an adult in diapers. My main focus is always protecting him, not running around trying to find a pair of pants while we document his behaviors. Thanks for the tip on gators...
@kylaurable I didn't realize his privacy came before his safety... I tried to put clothes on my autistic son one time when he was throwing a fit and he bit my face and drew blood. Sometimes because of the sensory sensitivity it hurts them. Some people should not judge until they know the ins and outs of the individual because they are not all the same...Some times touching their skin lightly hurts them. smells hurt them, sounds hurt them. Every autistic person is different. I live it daily.
I think it is nice that you inform about authism, but showing your son in diapers, almost naked is nothing I would call decent. I think as parents you should protect your son against being half naked on youtube.
@ragpag123 Let's think about what you suggest: First, he wears diapers. That's his reality. Secondly, doctors say he has the cognitive range of somewhere between 8 months and 3 years old, so, given those ages also wear diapers, it seems logical to show him in diapers, as you find many babies and toddlers on You Tube in diapers, and nobody seems to have a big problem with that. If seeing someone older in linear age only with diapers seems offensive to you, don't watch. We don't pretend here
I don't know all that much about autism so I was just wondering: Do they know why it is that autistic individuals hit themselves to express discomfort?
@kassiercoffman In our son's case, as I continue to study and study the research, it appears Jamey's SIB is rooted in hyperarousal dysregulation, but I'm still doing research. My theory however, may be close, since when we asked to try Guanfacine (tenex), it had almost an immediate effect on giving him more self control of his SIB, we will see...time will tell and no one drug is cure, there's more to it all...will keep you all updated.
I am so glad you posted this as people are so uninfomed when it comes to the levels of Autism. I myself have a daughter with several disabilities Chromosome duplication, Autism, and Apraxia. Her pain level is off the chart, she fell once and hit her head on the corner of a table and nothing. I heard the thump, ran to her room found her on the floor and bleeding. She only cried when she saw me upset. Then when they put 5 staples in her head for the cut, she didn't move!!!
Seeking God is no more crazy than seeking psychiatrists to help you find the right medications to balance the mind of an autistic person who is held captive to years of smashing his fists into his head and who has suffered for years. You do what you must, within reason, to HELP the person and bring them healing, comfort and relief. Do no harm is the thought behind this. Find what is most effective with the least harmful effects. Sometimes love and hugs just doesn't cut it,you must press on...
i actually have a friend whois autistic, hes nowhere near as severe as jamey, but he has his moments where he gets bad, he was self injurous as a kid but hes not anymore
Here you have some scientific studies. Contact someone with speciality in behaviour analysis and autism. Theese are the methods that are proven to have any effect. Do some research in this page and se if you can contact any of the people writing articles,
I'm glad i'm not that Kid! The way he has to wear diapers and Shits on himself.... what a Dumbass.... My reccomendation is just put that kid out of his Misery. he can beat on himself all he wants in the Afterlife. LOL he sounds like Chewbacca or he's getting Anally Raped when he makes Noises at the Beginning of the Video. XD
You make me so very sick. i shouldn't be wasting my time on your idiotic post. I know we dont use the R word anymore, but YOU are retarded, in the worst way. good luck to you in life. Your mom must be super proud.
i give you guys so much credit and you deserve so much. i know for sure i would never be able to put up with this. you guys must truly be great people. this is so sad. do you know the cause for him hitting himself?
@ILLINOISLOYALTY1 Sadly, he hits himself for many reasons. For example, if he hears a sudden loud noise, that could set off one hour of continual SIB (he wears ear protection daily). Also, he often hits while waiting for food, drink or bath. He has zero patience. He also hits himself when he feels any discomfort, as in the slightest blister, cut, cold, etc...and since he's non verbal, it's hard to tell what's going on, so we have to continually analyze, investigate, etc..It's frustrating.
@ILLINOISLOYALTY1 We are getting closer to finding better ways to protect him. Keeping him busy, busy busy is one way. Lots of walking all day helps. Also giving him snacks, drink frequently so it prevents him from outbursts from being hungry or thirsty. Most his self abuse is internally driven and rooted in severe autism so it's tough to get through to him. He's developed a habit of hitting that is deeply ingrained, it's a very bizzare behavior and baffles many experts.
@ILLINOISLOYALTY1 It is so sad to see a young adult with such severe autism that he constantly hits himself. I'm sure it is a struggle for every parent who goes through this. There are some severely autistic subjects who aren't so self-abusive, but they struggle to make do with what they have.
@ILLINOISLOYALTY1 I apologize for preaching through this, because I can't really know. But, you may want to have a priest come and purge the demon that is torturing this young man. That's just a guess and a hope (I want to give you people an idea that you may not have considered. which VERY WELL might help) I will not be offended if you people think me foolish, after all, it's just an idea.
@TheRandinoish No offense taken. When you are dealing with an autistic child who has pummeled his face and head for years, while a parade of experts and professionals chronically fail to help him, it's no wonder parents turn to God, priests and pastors to seek healing. People who don't live with this behavior don't understand how devastating it is for alll involved and how desperate you become to protect the person afflicted
poor kid, guess its to late 4 the group home option, have you ever considered hiring a helper? expensive but takes off a lot of stress, btw lady in the video you are a goddess. happy new years soz for spelling
Bless you and your family. Neither me nor my brother are this severely autistic and never have been. It's inspiring that you can cope with such difficulties, and any haters should just put themselves in your shoes, because I bet none of them could live with what you do.
Religion is a great thing for us to have, but when it comes to something as real as this, something you can definitely seek out assistance and support for that will help you and your child’s life, it is better to be more realistic. I think there is a lot of hope for your child. You guys seem like great people.
@ac2763 Our son's had over 23 behavioral assessments and been seen by autism experts for over 18 years. He's still hitting himself. Everything suggested by others as mostly been tried. He is a very unusual case. The key to his healing is multiple interventions. Constant, vigilant applications of things we know do work. And back up plans to things that do work and then suddenly don't. He's had a GREAT past two weeks, and we still don't really know WHY. It just is. But he's been really LOUD, too.
@CDFoakley As for the "religion is a great thing." Yep, it is, but we're not morons either. We don't just sit around waiting for God. We've been chasing practical, conventional, alternative and other things to help Jamey for years and we will continue to do so, even in the storms and crushing obstacles before us.
@CDFoakley I really enjoyed reading your response. Now I have a better understanding. Keep on going! Life is difficult at times, but in the end these are the things that are most worth it.
@CDFoakley ---> and when the guy finally died in the well after some days, in the hereafter he said to God: "Why didn't you help me when I prayed to you so many times, and I was in a great need". God said, I tried to help you out, gave you three chances which you denied!
This is just a story, but I agree we can't just be lazy and pray to God, we also have to act, like you do. You can't just say: Please God, bring this glass of water to me. Even if you repeat this thousands daysit wont come.
Hi, I think my comments were censored by YTube before. Anyways, and this is a totally serious comment, I suggest using psychotropics that are not necessarily legal. This young man's extreme condition calls for extreme measures. Have you tried THC, mescaline, PCP, marijuana, etc? I know they are illegal but some or all of them could have profound effects on his processing (neurotransmitters). Obviously, this course would have to be monitored closely. Whatever you do, my hat is off to you.
I have a lot of respect for you. don't be scared of anyone judging you for restraining your son, you only know what it is truly like when you're living it.
This video put tears in my eyes. As a parent of a severe CP son, I can somewhat relate to what its like to be up all night to control child movements. It is very exhausting, especially if you goes again what they are trying to do. I hope the things you did, does not put strain on your back. Its tough to think what it would be like in 5 or 10 years from now. Best wishes to you all. Have you check into HBOT for Autism, I am wondering if that can be helpful. We have not try it out yet.
Bless you and your family, I wish you all the best. Thank you for putting this video out there, it's so beneficial to raise awareness of what autistic families go through.
SIBIS is proven to help dramatically with these types of SIB. A controversial but proven method that will stop these types of self injuriuous behaviors in many individuals.
I as well have a son who is under the autism spectrum he is only 6 years old but so resembles your son tall long and thin and i can't get passed the expression on your son's face it . I see the same expression in my son. I'll pray for your family as well as all other familys dealing with the same and similar hardships of autism.
I came across your videos tonight. I am the mother of a 14 year old severly autistic son....he also is 100% non-verbal although he has said "mama" on rare occassions. He also requires complete care (bathing, feeding, toileting, dressing, etc.) I agree with you that the diagnosis "autism" has been WIDELY OVERUSED. Our children that require COMPLETE care are in a class by themselves. There is help and it is free. My email address is: LeaseLeMay@aol.com. Please email if you like. <3
I don't have a child with autism but I work at school for children with SIB and aggressive behaviors. I commend you! Your putting awareness out there. Its a hard thing to do. Also you seem like amazing parents and family. I wish you luck and happiness!
finding the genetic cause of autism and getting screened for the possibility of a child having it and/or detecting if a prenatal child will develop autism is a quick preventative fix. I hope that is possible someday
you are beautifull people, Strong and caring warm hearts ... im 18 and my brother is 8 with servear autism, and he does this... its emotionaly destressing watching a kaotic epposide like this, because u wish they understood the kind words you try and say to0 carlm them in such a situation, when sometimes it makes it worse.... familys with a meber of the family like this are strong it sure takes time and dranes alot of energy. and yes goverments are fuken low lifes who ant supporten this the dogs
Thank you for posting this video. Too many people in our "community" don't understand what it is like to have a profoundly autistic child and the damage they can do to themselves, and just how challenging they can be. God bless...
I appreciate your posting of your video. You are right alot of folks don't understand unless you actually have an autistic child yourself. I'm a mom too with an autistic child and feel often trapped by my son's condition. I try my best to encourage myself and know that I'm not the only one who has to go thru this type of illness. Hope you find time for yourself and take time for you.
My heart goes out to you. I have a 12 year old daughter with severe autism who also has SIBS especially when she has to urinate and no one can figure it out. She pulls her hair out and bites her hands and arms and hits her ears so hard she developed boxer's ear. She also has major GI issues and has been helped by some GI meds. I hope you find the underlying medical issue that is causing your beautiful son's pain so that he can live the healthy and happy life that he deserves. Godspeed!
OK Iam no doctor, but my son has severe restlessness and needs compression to control it... consider 1) binding his body and head with stretchy wide bandages - my son LOVES this, and then 2) OTC Magnesium 600-100mg, Calcium 300-500mg, and zinc 15-30mg - a common and easy to find blend. This got my son to stop rocking and whacking himself. He is only 10 now, but no longer self abusive.
My son had significant sensory autistic problems that were overwhelming to him when he was younger. We were told he may not be able to handle life in a meaningful way. We sought out the best treatment which led us to the Tahoma Clinic in Renton, WA. Dr. Davis Lamson did many biological treatments that were medically sound (and helped us avoid the "miracle" cures that don't work). He's a different person now. I will share more if someone wants to message me (no cures, but so much better!).
I have asperger syndrome so I don't have any seizures, self injuries etc. However, there was a period in my life (when puberty hit) that I had displayed uncontrollable behaviour. It was really hard to restrain myself- certain gestures, sounds of people eating, itchy clothes (I mean all clothes), low voices, whispering, smell of cigarettes (or incense), people touching me gave me nuts. And when I had those anger attacks nothing could stop me, even though I tried sometimes to restrain myself.
my son will be 18 soon and I know how hard it can be to deal with these behavoirs my son goes through these epeisodes all the time . I know he has no control over these behavoirs yet others think he does and that if he was just punished he would stop he is already punishing himself.I just wish more people could understand that you don't allow this to happen you have no control over it currently I am divorced because my ex husband just could not understand this. We have found no drugs that help..
this is a message of love and heartbreak I understand all too well. Our five year old daughter is very similar, though much more forcefull in resistance. I just bought a hundred bucks worth of vitamin supplements, b6, magnesium, C. probably a waste of hope and money, but we're pretty desperate at this point. Have you tried any of these for treatment?
ok, I might get some attack here...but I must say what I have to say; God does not hate his creators...actually, he loves us all..and what you are going through is washing you out to be in a high paradise with your healthy cured son. This life is a jail for us, and the other life is when we get rewarded for what we are doing here.If you beleive in the only one God, who is testing you right now...you will go to heaven for all the efforts...just read the Quran...the muslims bible..one time in life.
i could really feel what you feel...tears flowing in my eyes while watching...i've got a daughter whose 11 years old and she's exactly the same as what your son is doing...i hope that there's a light at the end of the tunnel so as they say for us parents whose got children like this....i hope....i think we just have to be strong and keep going for them...goodluck...
When you work with special needs people you discover they have a direct line to God. He's on speed dial for them. When Jamey's staring "into nowhere" but smiling, making contented noises do you really think he's alone in there? He curls up in a small tight ball sometimes, if I put a small child in my lap that wants to cuddle, they will probably curl up like that. In that position, calm and gently rocking I know in my heart that He is holding him. Giving all a glimpse of the love He gives.
This just breaks my heart...I have lived throught his too. I always worry that another episode will occur. Pople just don't get that whilst they are physically hurting themselves we are having our hearts torn out. Our children are so precious. Bless you.
I cried as I watched his. I have a four year old with an autism diagnosis and self injurious behavior. We've had many many nights while he's up screaming and biting himself. I completely empathize with your pain and exhaustion. From one firefighter family to another, please know there are others out there who pray for you and your family.
@nabyrne1 Thank you for your response. It's comforting, in a strange way that only you can know, that we aren't alone. It's hard to find others who understand this type of behavior....
As Jenny McCarthy said in The View interview, God doesn't give anyone a challenge they cannot overcome. Please do not lose your faith, life is a test, and it's a different test for everyone.
As for the ones who commented on the mother's body, please go and post your comments on more appropriate videos, not the ones who would lke to share life's difficulties with others.
@SwollenCranium Well, I agree, it seems God does hate us and others sometimes. But that thinking is straight from the pit of hell. Staying the course during suffering, sadness and crushing defeat is what makes us warriors in life. it prepares you to see victory. No matter how long that takes. 2 seconds
Our Isaiah is currently using "self abuse" as well as agression. He has been at it since August of '09. We see some relief from meds and allot of relief from "ignoring" the behaviours. What all have you tried? And for how long? Your son is beutiful.
Does anyone know if self-injuring autistic or ID people need external help to protect them from self-injuring or can they be taught not to? If it can be taught, what would be the best way to do it?
First off, some of the remarks on here are just plan outrageous.
CDFoakley,
My heart is very heavy after watching these videos. I have no words. God bless you. I can't even imagine how you do this day in and day out. I hope your getting the support that you need.
My prayer is that there will be a cure soon.
Thank you so much for giving a voice to these kids/ adults with severe autism and not just let lifetime make another movie about someone with Asbeurgers and call it autism.
After watching this video I do apologize for my insensitive comment regarding accepting the hand you were dealt. Yes my youngest son is autistic but for all practical purposes he acts like a normal 12 year old. He was out of diapers at age 3 , he washes , feeds and dresses himself and attends school in a structured learning program. He's very withdrawn and watches TV a lot of the time , I was told there were different levels of autisim , but You really got your hands full , God Bless You.
The state opposes any device that causes "pain and suffering" as if him punching himself doesn't....so everytime we would go to fight for it in past we'd go through HELL to get the therapy, even though docs prescribed it and it stopped his head punching. I don't think they even make sibis device anymore. It was quite an antiquated device, they could've done a much better job making it, so it looked like a watch and delivered somethingn like the TENS UNIT delivers
my heart goes out to you and your family. My son Jory is 14, severely autistic and mostly blind. He also wears a pull up and trying to potty train. I know what your going thru about fighting the system. Stay strong mom, God bless you and your family. Tyna
Have you guys ever considered the ambient background noises. Many autistic people are extremely sensitive to sounds. This includes the crackle of a frying pan and the running water in a sink. Our daughter will sometimes get annoyed by the low flumeing sound of the flame of our hot water heater in the closet. It may seem like nothing, but they hear this very clear and very load. It's white noise to an already overloaded system.
i use to be like that when i was younger... i also didnt know the differnce between hot and cold and hurting my self, i was highly sensetive to clothes, and touch, smell and sound, and all i ate was instant noddle for breakfast, lunch and dinner until i was 13. once my mum was making noodles and the phone rang and so she put the pan at the back of the stove whilse she answered the phone, like i said i didnt like wearing clothes and i just came out of the bath, i ran into the kitchen & i tried..
to drain the noodles and got it all down me, i was histrically laughing, it didnt hurt but i had nearly 3rd degree burns all over me, mum put me in a cold shower & by the time we got to hospital nearly all the blister on my skin had gone. same happened when there was glass in candy bar and i was just there chomping away until my mum notice, didnt feel a thing. the reason why you son does it is because its conforting to him and its the only feeling that he knows what it is.. if that makes sense.
@sexysophxxxx Hi there, gluten and caisen can cause an opiate effect in autistic children. That's why they have such a high tolerance to pain and that's why you were so addicted to noodles. My son is autistic and he was like a little drug addict when i started the GF/CF diet. He's doing so great now. Worth researching????
I read that he has epilepsy, is he off all forms of gluten, casein and soy? I would definitely try that! Gluten intolerance is related to epilepsy and could possibly worsen his episodes. God bless you, I cannot imagine what you and him and your family are going through.
Have you tried Andy Cutler's Chelation protocol? I would try that and dietary intervention. I understand you have tried all kinds of things to help him. Many of us have great results with Andy's protocol, please give it a try for his sake. Visit our Yahoo! Group Autism-Mercury
also , getting off prescription medication ,eating better and trying to improve my health improved me alot. I make eye contact and and more social now. so perhaps that might help him. either way i wish you all the best. and I'll say a prayer for him.
I am on the high end of the spectrum. I used to hit myself all the time because of my sensory problems. it looks like he is hitting himself for the same reason. (Try hugging him very tightly to give him deep pressure stimulation.) he is trying to do that for himself thats why he is hitting. hugging him tightly gives him the same effect in a safe way.
I see a child abused by not giving him what he needs. Where are the pressure techniques? Shoving your breasts in his face further upsets him and putting on restraints is punishment for which he does not have the capacity to understand long term. He needs pressure!!!!!!!!!!!Sit on his back and rub his shoulders and arms with every muscle you have. He may get red in the arms but he needs pressure to reconnect nerves. Pressure works! Temple Grandin used it as well.
I'm voicing the opinion of many in the autism community. I was voted the one to post as we did not want to bombard the family. Check out pressure techniques. In the videos there is no evidence of this technique being used or attempted.
@Zaboo526 I understand the pressure technique, but i don't understand your implication here. You imply that that's all this Mother has to do, and that her technique is not the right way to deal with her child's outbursts.
In addition, you suggest the she needs to put her child in a group home. Where do you get off saying this? I have never in my lifetime found a group home to be the best environment for any level of autism cases....
Why would I be posting if I did not have first hand experience. The family should take off these videos and give him back his privacy. They should also pursue alternative care to get a break for themselves and give their other children some "typical" time with Mom and Dad. We see a family in crisis. A family that will not get what they need via You Tube.
Researched every resource, website, consulted experts and parents and went to conferences. Sat on his back, rubbing his back, arms, legs until he responded and I was numb from the shoulders down. The behaviour is under control now and within minutes. Pressure is key in sensory disintegration disorders and we have a gut feeling this will work for Jamey. His family also needs a break from it all but his privacy should be respected. Remove the videos. You think I'm cruel? Ha!
She is having her other children restrain him. Is that healthy for them? I have first hand experience with terrific group homes that provide exceptional care and access to resources that the families do not.
I truly understand your pain and heartbreak as a parent to see their child cause pain to themselves with an autism diagnosis. There's light at the end of the tunnel. Please don;t give up. I understand homeostasis and would like to offer any information that may help. Please write me and let's start sharing dialog. I have some findings that could help.
He's not a child anymore. He is an adult that should be in a group home with like people. He should have terrific staff that is fully trained and make a decent wage. In Canada this man would have the best of care with outings and dinner and involvement with the local Christmas parade. This man is tortured and needs an intervention. Sigh....
its not gods fault that james has this terrible desease. i blame the enviornment and shots. god, however, will help james through this. god is holding james hand and helping him get through his episodes saying "it will be over soon james."
I just want to say that you are absolutely amazing. I know no words can make things better but thank God that your son has you. I pray that you find people around you who can help so you can have some you time and regain some energy. Father of Autistic son.
Omg, I am sitting here with tears streaming down my face, this could so easily be me and my son who is 15 with autism. I am so blessed he does not have very much self injury, he only does it when very stressed and most times you can reason with him or distract him out of it, with a favorite item. I suspect small seizure in my son, and had him teasted but of course they could find nothing, he constantly complains of ear and throat pain, and sometimes headaches.
It's difficult to catch seizure activity unless they are having a seizure. That's why sleep studies are good, but insurances seldom support it. And I'm so sick of medical tests showing nothing, though I don't trust tests because they can be wrong and sometimes doctors don't catch results. My son had H-pylori for months despite blood test showing it, but doctor *gastroenterologist* failed to see the results on the computer, until I pointed them out. He acted "surprised." Go figure.
I am so upset and sad right now, I have a 4 ft tall60 lb 5 year old with self injurious habbits, he hits his head and bites himself he is not on meds and we have recently tried chelation, we are seeing some improvement, but it's slow and I have worries that better for him isn't enough. I'm scared of what will happen when he goes through puberty. I don't know why my son is self injurious but I want to thank you for putting these videos out there so people can see this side of the spectrum. Thanx!
Very interesting....we also think he could be having bad dreams or seizure auras that startle him from sleep and thus trigger self injury ...so many underlying mechanisms....never ends...
I saw a recent report on the Science channel about cluster headaches and they used two things to help, oxygen and an experimental drug derivative of LSD. What was interesting about this report especially was that normal individuals talked about their need to punch their heads to relieve themselves of the pain of the cluster headaches. I think its entirely possible that your son could be experiencing these things considering all the neurological issues he has. email me for more info.
I cannot bear to watch this I'm afraid :(

DarkQuietWyattON 5 months ago
I cannot see these. I have an aide that explains what happens in them. What is obvious, even to me, is that Jamie feels loved and feels that he matters. In all the world, that is the greatest gift you can give Jamie and that G-d gave you the gift of patience is a blessing. We learn from everyone around us and Jamie can teach those around him many lessons. I have high functioning autism but I live in a residential school for people with many different kind of disabilities...
DarkQuietWyattON 5 months ago
How many people live with this severely disruptive person? How fair is to you, your family, that everybody has to suffer and "live in torture" (your words) because of one person's severe disability? You refuse to give up on him, but it feels like your constant attention to him isn't fair to others in your family. My opinion doesn't matter, but I don't understand your priorities in life. Your sacrifice isn''t praiseworthy if the whole family suffers, and they do.
Clickgirl 5 months ago
@Clickgirl Yes, it can be torture, but my other children have also learned to be tolerant, compassionate, strong advocates for those who are bullied are abuse and have learned so much from the pain and suffering around them. Moreover, there are many videos on this channel that show the beautiful sides of autism. I show both sides because they are REAL. My kids are strong. Very strong people because of their severely autistic brother.
CDFoakley 5 months ago 2
@Clickgirl Your comment on this video is so disturbing to me, This family goes threw great lengths to keep the family together be cause they love their son unlike other people who will give a family member over to the state because they don't want to "deal with it". They strive very hard to help address behavior concerns they have. What is wrong with you, you MUST not have a child that is autistic im guessing. And what blows my mind is the kind response you got that you did not deserve.
hoiet 3 months ago 2
@Clickgirl WoW... what a catogorization! I thought she said her son was Severely Autistic. Not a "severely disruptive person". All the videos that I have seen are indicative of the entire FAMILY coming together to assist. And, THAT IMO is PRAISEWORTHY!!! Everyone is not so selfish in this world so as to institutionalize a relative at the first sign he or she might be a "disruption" to the lives of others in the household. I'm flabbergasted by your candor, demonstrative of self-centeredness. IJS

Thank you.. Clothes or not it's educational for some who don't judge..Bless y'all
chevygirl1092002 7 months ago
@chevygirl1092002 autistic and mentally retarded? I never pair these together unless the child with autism also has fragile x or some other syndrome that impairs intellect. I believe many severely to profoundly autistic people are way smarter than we think. They just can't show us on conventional testing so they get labeled mentally retarded. For all we know, they've memorized the world around them. Just a bit of encouragement for you! Hope you get some sleep. I hate being tired!

I don't hear a husband on the scene so if you are single with all of this may God help you through and reward you for your perseverance and abundant love.
pinkyt67 7 months ago
maybe you should have been thought about putting pants on him first for his own privacy? also, have you even thought about "gators" ? they are stiff, full arm sleeves that keep your child's arms straight out so they cannot harm themself. I work with a self abusive child and that's what we use, if the child tries to take them off, we put a sweater on the child...BUT they are not to be used 24/7, they should only be put on for about 30 minutes, whenever the child has an self abuse episode..
kylaurable 8 months ago
@kylaurable Never heard of "gators". Will check it out. As for the diaper, it seems some people are freaked out by seeing an adult in diapers. My main focus is always protecting him, not running around trying to find a pair of pants while we document his behaviors. Thanks for the tip on gators...
CDFoakley 8 months ago 3
@kylaurable I didn't realize his privacy came before his safety... I tried to put clothes on my autistic son one time when he was throwing a fit and he bit my face and drew blood. Sometimes because of the sensory sensitivity it hurts them. Some people should not judge until they know the ins and outs of the individual because they are not all the same...Some times touching their skin lightly hurts them. smells hurt them, sounds hurt them. Every autistic person is different. I live it daily.
chevygirl1092002 7 months ago
I think it is nice that you inform about authism, but showing your son in diapers, almost naked is nothing I would call decent. I think as parents you should protect your son against being half naked on youtube.
ragpag123 8 months ago
@ragpag123 Let's think about what you suggest: First, he wears diapers. That's his reality. Secondly, doctors say he has the cognitive range of somewhere between 8 months and 3 years old, so, given those ages also wear diapers, it seems logical to show him in diapers, as you find many babies and toddlers on You Tube in diapers, and nobody seems to have a big problem with that. If seeing someone older in linear age only with diapers seems offensive to you, don't watch. We don't pretend here

I don't know all that much about autism so I was just wondering: Do they know why it is that autistic individuals hit themselves to express discomfort?
kassiercoffman 9 months ago

Sometimes love and hugs just doesn't cut it,you must press on...

i give you guys so much credit and you deserve so much. i know for sure i would never be able to put up with this. you guys must truly be great people. this is so sad. do you know the cause for him hitting himself?
ILLINOISLOYALTY1 1 year ago
@ILLINOISLOYALTY1 Sadly, he hits himself for many reasons. For example, if he hears a sudden loud noise, that could set off one hour of continual SIB (he wears ear protection daily). Also, he often hits while waiting for food, drink or bath. He has zero patience. He also hits himself when he feels any discomfort, as in the slightest blister, cut, cold, etc...and since he's non verbal, it's hard to tell what's going on, so we have to continually analyze, investigate, etc..It's frustrating.
CDFoakley 1 year ago
@ILLINOISLOYALTY1 We are getting closer to finding better ways to protect him. Keeping him busy, busy busy is one way. Lots of walking all day helps. Also giving him snacks, drink frequently so it prevents him from outbursts from being hungry or thirsty. Most his self abuse is internally driven and rooted in severe autism so it's tough to get through to him. He's developed a habit of hitting that is deeply ingrained, it's a very bizzare behavior and baffles many experts.
CDFoakley 1 year ago
@ILLINOISLOYALTY1 It is so sad to see a young adult with such severe autism that he constantly hits himself. I'm sure it is a struggle for every parent who goes through this. There are some severely autistic subjects who aren't so self-abusive, but they struggle to make do with what they have.
alterman156 11 months ago
@ILLINOISLOYALTY1 I apologize for preaching through this, because I can't really know. But, you may want to have a priest come and purge the demon that is torturing this young man. That's just a guess and a hope (I want to give you people an idea that you may not have considered. which VERY WELL might help) I will not be offended if you people think me foolish, after all, it's just an idea.
peace and God's pure blessing
TheRandinoish 11 months ago
@TheRandinoish No offense taken. When you are dealing with an autistic child who has pummeled his face and head for years, while a parade of experts and professionals chronically fail to help him, it's no wonder parents turn to God, priests and pastors to seek healing. People who don't live with this behavior don't understand how devastating it is for alll involved and how desperate you become to protect the person afflicted

Religion is a great thing for us to have, but when it comes to something as real as this, something you can definitely seek out assistance and support for that will help you and your child’s life, it is better to be more realistic. I think there is a lot of hope for your child. You guys seem like great people.
ac2763 1 year ago
@ac2763 Our son's had over 23 behavioral assessments and been seen by autism experts for over 18 years. He's still hitting himself. Everything suggested by others as mostly been tried. He is a very unusual case. The key to his healing is multiple interventions. Constant, vigilant applications of things we know do work. And back up plans to things that do work and then suddenly don't. He's had a GREAT past two weeks, and we still don't really know WHY. It just is. But he's been really LOUD, too.
CDFoakley 1 year ago

Have you tried any of these for treatment?
pherronii 1 year ago
ok, I might get some attack here...but I must say what I have to say; God does not hate his creators...actually, he loves us all..and what you are going through is washing you out to be in a high paradise with your healthy cured son. This life is a jail for us, and the other life is when we get rewarded for what we are doing here.If you beleive in the only one God, who is testing you right now...you will go to heaven for all the efforts...just read the Quran...the muslims bible..one time in life.

I cried as I watched his. I have a four year old with an autism diagnosis and self injurious behavior. We've had many many nights while he's up screaming and biting himself. I completely empathize with your pain and exhaustion. From one firefighter family to another, please know there are others out there who pray for you and your family.

You have the audacity to cite "God" in your opening titles?
Your child is a perfect poster for there being NO GOD.
Because if there is a GOD then it truly hates you for burdening your with this horrific lifetime of crushing defeat and sadness.

@SwollenCranium Well, I agree, it seems God does hate us and others sometimes. But that thinking is straight from the pit of hell. Staying the course during suffering, sadness and crushing defeat is what makes us warriors in life. it prepares you to see victory. No matter how long that takes. 2 seconds

Hi,
Our Isaiah is currently using "self abuse" as well as agression. He has been at it since August of '09. We see some relief from meds and allot of relief from "ignoring" the behaviours. What all have you tried? And for how long? Your son is beutiful.

He's very withdrawn and watches TV a lot of the time , I was told there were different levels of autisim , but You really got your hands full , God Bless You.

elchunko09 1 year ago
The state opposes any device that causes "pain and suffering" as if him punching himself doesn't....so everytime we would go to fight for it in past we'd go through HELL to get the therapy, even though docs prescribed it and it stopped his head punching. I don't think they even make sibis device anymore. It was quite an antiquated device, they could've done a much better job making it, so it looked like a watch and delivered somethingn like the TENS UNIT delivers

mgroenke3213 1 year ago
Have you guys ever considered the ambient background noises. Many autistic people are extremely sensitive to sounds. This includes the crackle of a frying pan and the running water in a sink. Our daughter will sometimes get annoyed by the low flumeing sound of the flame of our hot water heater in the closet. It may seem like nothing, but they hear this very clear and very load. It's white noise to an already overloaded system.

i use to be like that when i was younger... i also didnt know the differnce between hot and cold and hurting my self, i was highly sensetive to clothes, and touch, smell and sound, and all i ate was instant noddle for breakfast, lunch and dinner until i was 13. once my mum was making noodles and the phone rang and so she put the pan at the back of the stove whilse she answered the phone, like i said i didnt like wearing clothes and i just came out of the bath, i ran into the kitchen & i tried..
sexysophxxxx 2 years ago
to drain the noodles and got it all down me, i was histrically laughing, it didnt hurt but i had nearly 3rd degree burns all over me, mum put me in a cold shower & by the time we got to hospital nearly all the blister on my skin had gone. same happened when there was glass in candy bar and i was just there chomping away until my mum notice, didnt feel a thing. the reason why you son does it is because its conforting to him and its the only feeling that he knows what it is.. if that makes sense.
sexysophxxxx 2 years ago
@sexysophxxxx Hi there, gluten and caisen can cause an opiate effect in autistic children. That's why they have such a high tolerance to pain and that's why you were so addicted to noodles. My son is autistic and he was like a little drug addict when i started the GF/CF diet. He's doing so great now. Worth researching????
weetofu 1 year ago
I read that he has epilepsy, is he off all forms of gluten, casein and soy? I would definitely try that! Gluten intolerance is related to epilepsy and could possibly worsen his episodes. God bless you, I cannot imagine what you and him and your family are going through.

Zaboo526 2 years ago
@Zaboo526 Where have you been for this boy's whole life? That really is the answer! You're such a judgmental genius.
Now put yourself in this family's shoes for 16 + years and then give your wonderful advice.
People like you astound me, with your ignorance oozing from your mouth.
Lavinco 2 years ago
I'm voicing the opinion of many in the autism community. I was voted the one to post as we did not want to bombard the family. Check out pressure techniques. In the videos there is no evidence of this technique being used or attempted.
Zaboo526 2 years ago
@Zaboo526 I understand the pressure technique, but i don't understand your implication here. You imply that that's all this Mother has to do, and that her technique is not the right way to deal with her child's outbursts.
In addition, you suggest the she needs to put her child in a group home. Where do you get off saying this? I have never in my lifetime found a group home to be the best environment for any level of autism cases....
Lavinco 2 years ago
@Zaboo526
As long as the family is loving and supportive, the child should always be in the home with the family.
Where is your heart? Do you have a child with autism?
Lavinco 2 years ago
Why would I be posting if I did not have first hand experience. The family should take off these videos and give him back his privacy. They should also pursue alternative care to get a break for themselves and give their other children some "typical" time with Mom and Dad. We see a family in crisis. A family that will not get what they need via You Tube.
Zaboo526 2 years ago
@Zaboo526 You cleverly dodged my question. Do you have a child with autism?
Lavinco 2 years ago
Researched every resource, website, consulted experts and parents and went to conferences. Sat on his back, rubbing his back, arms, legs until he responded and I was numb from the shoulders down. The behaviour is under control now and within minutes. Pressure is key in sensory disintegration disorders and we have a gut feeling this will work for Jamey. His family also needs a break from it all but his privacy should be respected. Remove the videos. You think I'm cruel? Ha!
Zaboo526 2 years ago
She is having her other children restrain him. Is that healthy for them? I have first hand experience with terrific group homes that provide exceptional care and access to resources that the families do not.
Zaboo526 2 years ago
I truly understand your pain and heartbreak as a parent to see their child cause pain to themselves with an autism diagnosis. There's light at the end of the tunnel. Please don;t give up. I understand homeostasis and would like to offer any information that may help. Please write me and let's start sharing dialog. I have some findings that could help.
May God Bless.
Lavinco 2 years ago
He's not a child anymore. He is an adult that should be in a group home with like people. He should have terrific staff that is fully trained and make a decent wage. In Canada this man would have the best of care with outings and dinner and involvement with the local Christmas parade. This man is tortured and needs an intervention. Sigh....

Omg, I am sitting here with tears streaming down my face, this could so easily be me and my son who is 15 with autism. I am so blessed he does not have very much self injury, he only does it when very stressed and most times you can reason with him or distract him out of it, with a favorite item. I suspect small seizure in my son, and had him teasted but of course they could find nothing, he constantly complains of ear and throat pain, and sometimes headaches.
akitaakita2 2 years ago
It's difficult to catch seizure activity unless they are having a seizure. That's why sleep studies are good, but insurances seldom support it. And I'm so sick of medical tests showing nothing, though I don't trust tests because they can be wrong and sometimes doctors don't catch results. My son had H-pylori for months despite blood test showing it, but doctor *gastroenterologist* failed to see the results on the computer, until I pointed them out. He acted "surprised." Go figure.
