If I remember right in the show of 78 they reached earth at our present times which would be a nice ironic link to the ETs expected to be there nowadays are just US (the human race) !

Another option would that they are indeed our ancestors landing on earth shortly after the end of the last Ice Age and founding our civilisation after a first "unkwown" human civilisation has destroyed itself>>myths of Atlantis,Mu and all that other stuff....

Ideal ending... Well, it wouldn't be a ruined earth imo. I wrote about this in a forum a little after that dreck and it goes something like this: Technology beyond comprehension. The sun looking like a Sandglass; the squeezed center being a energy belt feeding the system and its' several Tannhäuser Gates to the other galaxies. A Massive traffic of space-ships everywhere and the list goes on. And on and on. And then you all find out why Cylons where made and who the people where. Another tale...

What i love most about Battlestar is that it shuns the uber-advanced technology, spandex suits and ridiculously fake aliens which dominate the genre. Granted, nuclear wastelands have been used before, however, the tone of the show just would not support an uplifting, tech-saturated Earth culture. It wouldn't. It would fly in the face of everything RDM has attempted to prove about not only Sci-Fi as a genre, but television as a whole. Sometimes, there just isn't a happy ending. Sometimes the depressing is the order of the day and we must simply live with that.

I thought the ending for the mid-season finalie was perfect. I some what suspected that this would happen arrive at Earth and find it in a radioactive state. Of course there is still a half of season to go so I am suspecting the ending will be some what unpredictable.
