  • Beautiful guitar playing. Thanks for uploading and sharing.

  • Does anyone know if there are sheet notes for the version bonfa played on the "solo in rio" record?

  • very sweet, i like...

  • Your ability to play a multitude of music genres is astounding. Thanks for the music.

A Day in the Life of a Fool”. Grande abraço

  • Very good.

  • Lovely - please join the yoodoomusic website!

doin' it sharp once again on Youtube, I just don't understand why TC isn't touring, or putting out some serious CDs, he's real good:)

    but im high.

    so whatever

  • composition for Maysa Monjardim

  • Arrangement vraiement chouette BRAVOS

  • I like this. It's an unusual arrangement but it works quite well. The rubato feel is perfect. Very expressive delivery. Great tone from your guitar. Clearly you know where the sweet spots live.

Keep posting. You "class up" the joint.

    allen

  • Hahah, thanks Allen. I haven't watched this one for 3 years since i put it up (and i've completely forgotten Hodel's arrangement). I would probably do a more idiomatic version these days if i took it into my head to play the tune again.

  • I don't know man. This performance stands on its own.

I often forget arrangements from way back. I have been playing "The Shadow of Your Smile" since I was 16. When I recorded it to upload I completely forgot my original arrangement. I improvised the entire first verse. Then I remembered the rest of the arrangement. It came out OK but it sounds a bit melancholy.

    Anyway, I enjoy your performances.

    Cheers,

    allen

  • Damnit! Everytime I get an idea of something I should figure out, you've already got the damned thing recorded!

Great playing man, you're a huge asset on here.

  • :-)

  • man i tried ordering that brazillian masters book a couple months ago, i was rly disappointed...

  • scienceofsound music. This arrangement from "The Brazilian Masters" is availabe for free on the web at "Dirk's Guitar Page". Scroll down to Luis Bonfa and its right there note for note in music and tab. It is in pdf format but if you have Tabedit you can also choose to download it that way and then you can both hear it as it plays and see the music going by. Good Luck.

  • It's un-cool that Dirk doesn't credit Brian Hodel for re-posting his arrangements. Hodel's versions are unique and should at least be credited.

The Hodel book is SO REASONABLY priced, that no one has any excuse but to pay for it. Go to sheetmusicplus and type in "Brian Hodel".

  • Troubleclef. I agree with you about Brian Hodel. the guy who tabledited it (Rolf Dannehl) also does not credit Hodel. When I bought my Brazilian Masters over 35 years ago there were no tab programs. I looked it up at Sheetmusicplus and even today its only in sheet music- no tab.Thats too bad because it eliminates lots of players who cannot read music. Just a note- its $6.95 today. My copy has a $6.95 sticker on it. No cost increase in all these years?

  • Ah, yes, that's right I didn't realize that the tableedit site includes tab. Still, he should acknowledge Brian's work.

I've had my coffee-stained copy of 'the brazilian masters' for *only* 24 years or so. Great book!

  • Hello-

I always enjoy your playing! How do you get such a good recorded sound? My camcorder does video well, but the sound is poor.

    Thanks!

    James Caudill

  • well i can't reproduce this sound from these early clips without buying another mini-mic that came with the webcam. oddly enough, that had the best sound. now I've got mid-level professional mics and the sound is crappy! Go figure. Anyhow, glad you liked it.

  • Muy bonito

  • You play it with tenderness ,and with some jazz notes too. In other words ,you play bossa nova. Excellent ,five stars !

  • I'd forgotten you covered this one; that's a fairly odd arrangement. Lovely as ever though.

  • very very beatiful...

    lovely played.

Any chance to get the sheet of this beatiful music?

  • i like to play guitar especially the Brazilian songs but sadly i can't play it cos' i don't have talent..

  • nylon was a warmer sound compared to acoustic. i prefer classical because of that reason.

  • Agreed. Classical nylon string guitar, especially when played that well, is one of the very few instruments I could hear 24 hrs a day for the rest of my life without gettig tired of it.

  • what model guitar do you play?

  • excellente. Merci pour me permetre profite et d'apprecier cette belle musique.

  • well done!! nice sound, nice arrangement..

    5/5 for sure!

  • Uno de los mejores arreglos que he oído para guitarra en este tema... fantástico!

  • best arrangement of this i have had the pleasure of hearing....5/5

  • it is a great arrangement, for sure.

  • indeed, been listening over and over. great.

  • You can serenade that to anyone with that song. I love the movie where that song came from.

  • Where can I find the notes for this???

  • NYLONs FOR THE WEAK!......jk, nice job. 5/5

  • unnecessary joke?

  • Nylon's for the weak?! Are you an idiot or something?!

  • A beautiful piece, and very nice playing. I ordered the book you mentioned. I'm sure I will enjoy it. Thanks a lot!

  • thanks. yes, it's a great book. enjoy it. I need to relearn a couple things from it myself.

  • I love your bossa nova playing...so relaxing

  • dude .... absolutely amazing .... love the picking stance

  • Great. I love this song. How can I get the score?

  • google for "Brian Hodel brazilian masters" i think it's still in print

  • blinding

  • beautiful playing dude!

  • Or perhaps the hornblower's n & m in Morse Code stood for "Nunca melhor"

  • An earlier poster, called the guy who honked at the end an idiot. I heard "n" and "m" in Morse code. He was just signalling, "Nice, man."

  • great playing man.

I saw on another video comment that you're not brazilian... that's cool, because you know a lot of brazilian pieces.

for how long have you been playing?

    keep on the good work

  • thanks. right, i'm not brazilian. just love the music. i've been playing for 33+ years.

  • My favorite jazz video period! Best interpretation of this song and most original arrangement!

  • truly incredible sound....

    keep up the great work

  • this is wonderfully played, well done.

  • beautiful..you brought tears to my eyes..this was my late granduncle's favorite piece..

    thanks, again!

  • this is a great song, huh

  • Que maravilha!!!! magico!!!

  • troubleclef..you have all the sensitivity of a

    butterfly..or better still a moonflower blossoming...so beautiful.

  • great great great. You rule, once again!

I feel your anger at the idiot honking during the last seconds. :-)

  • Marvelous!, great interpretation, CONGRATULATIONS!!!:D

  • Very nice video :) It's the next version of this gorgeus song, but I'll remember it :) Also: Great car at the end :D

  • Beautiful interpretation!

  • thanks for your interpretation! its breathtaking! thanks also for the score book recommendation. I'll buy it and work on Manha de Carnaval! thanks again! 5 ***** stars

  • how beautiful....

  • bravo ! j'aimerais bien une version plus lente ou la tablature ! please !!!!!

  • it's still in print. search amazon for "brian hodel brazilian masters"

  • I play but not like that. you good dude.

  • Very good....... you are a star!

  • I've listened to this probably 50 times. I am 64 and returning to guitar after a long absense. I found the booklet that I bought 20 years ago and can now play this arrangement but am somwheat discouraged. I was wondering. After the arrangement was "under your hands", memorized, how many times have you played it to get it where you have it now?

  • GREAT JOB! sounds to me like it is the arrangement from tbm, hard to forget it once youve read thorugh it and its in your hands, very very nice job =)

  • why disable embed? I wanted to put it on my blog for a music thread. It would draw people to yoru art.

I think you ought to reconsider

  • wow. amazing. thank you!

  • Hi Is this arangemet from the book "The Brazilian Masters" arranged by Brian Hodel. I have several arrangements of Manha de Carnival but yours is the most haunting and the best played. Could you confirm for me that the arrangement is from that booklet. Thanks

  • yes. i mention the Hodel arrangement in the video details. thanks.

  • Hi, dear Tony: Today is uma Manha de Carnaval (Monday, Feb.19) aqui no Brasil and I am celebrating watching and enjoying your interpretation. Thanks!

    Gotta love this guy II

  • gotta love this guy

  • nice playing.

You play a lot of different harmonies between the usually accords... thats funny.

  • voce e otimo, uma das mais lindas melodias ja escrita, adoro bonfa

  • Where can I get the Hodel arrangement in notation? Many thanks.

  • on amazon. search "hodel Brazilian masters"

  • Great song...great rendition. Five stars.

  • Simply sacred! Thank you sir.

  • my heart loves you

  • bossa nova lo mas grande del mundo la poesia hecha melodia es como un atardecer o como presenciar la belleza de una mujer

  • Very nice, maybe a bit more in time and less rubato? A matter of taste. 4 stars.

  • great song.thanks!

  • Very well done! Thx 4 sharing your talent!

  • I love the way you play this so much Im going to learn it as you have played it, take a listen to my version on acoustic, it hasn't got a patch on yours, I love the feel and the chords you have used, brilliant.

  • Perfect, very warm - From segovia

  • Ive always loved this song

  • Wow. I'm performing this as "A Day in the Life of a Fool" with my jazz choir, and I'm playing an accompaniment version of this... but this solo is far more impressive. Bravo.

  • Thank you. Awesome playing! You make it look effortless.

  • After watching it again I have to add that your "turnarounds" are really the "cat's ass"! Man they're so rich and discordant enough to make you listen and say wow when the resolve. I'm really impressed.

  • the credit goes to the arranger Brian Hodel, but thanks.

  • Do you happen to know where this arrangement might be obtained?

  • Never mind, I just did a google search and found some of his books. Did you do a video of Desafinado? That's another one that I love.

  • i used to play Hodel's arrangement of Desafinado. nowadays i just play the chords and sing it (very 'desafinado'). maybe i'll try to get it to sound acceptable and post it at some point.

  • That's got to be one of the best versions of that song that I have ever heard. Your moving bass line and placement of the chord melody work remarkably well. Bravo!!

  • muito obrigado!

  • People like you inspire me to keep playing the guitar and not quit every time I get frustrated. Thank you for the inspitation. :)

  • People like you inspire me to keep playing the guitar and not quit every time I get frustrated. Thank you for the inspitation. :)

  • Thank you Sir.

    Orpheus negro?

Anyways, this beautiful movie wan an Oscar, and would have deserved much better.

    Greetings from Finland.

  • Thank you Sir.

    Orpheus negro?

The movie stil wan an Oscar.

    Greetings from Finland.

  • Creo que tu arreglo es mejor que el mío. Me encanta.

  • Really good job.

  • Super ! félicitations à l'arrangeur et à l'interprète.

  • Oncore oncore keep the videos comming

  • wow, i'm gonna listen again.

  • you humiliate us, poor creatures trying to play a few accords...

  • That is the way that piece supposed to be played -

simple and melancholic. You let the music flow

and tell the story - instead of forcing some

    "inventive" rhythmical or dynamical gimmicks.

I esp. liked the first repetition - you really did

a good job playing rubato yet allowing the phrases

to connect in a such natural and understated way.

Thanks a lot, man! It was great inspiration - to

dig up that Hodel's arrangement and work on it.

  • Bravo!!! toca usted muy bien, mis respetos y vaya interpretacion ***** perfecto.

  • I see, you like Genesis, King Crimson, Bossa Nova. Me as well. I heard this song first by Astrud Gilberto. So peaceful and nice.

  • muy bien hecho, esta genial ese arreglo tuyo para Manha Do Carnaval, Congrats

  • Ouch .. amazing arrangement.

I would complain about the natural bossa fluidity, not really felt here. But that's a poor critics according to the great great skills it required.

    Nice job and nice vid.

  • well done!

  • Nice job!
