When a business receives defective widgets, they return them for functional widgets. Yet school teachers have to do the impossible. This is analogous to basing a doctor's pay on whether or not his or her patient follows medical advice. Why punish the doctor when the patient is not following medical advice? In healthcare, non-compliant patients have to sign "against medical advice" forms to protect the doctor. Is there an equivalent form to protect educators for noncompliant parents?

Collectively we could have discussed this prior to SB5, maybe there wouldn't be so much contention. The fact seems to be that the governor has realized there is not a good way to do this...so now wants to put the solution on us to figure out. I, for one, do not plan on giving him a solution. Hmmm... come to think about it, I didn't get my invitation to come up with a plan. Another lie... he said he has

hi governor, can you please tell your email team to stop spamming me. i tried to unsubscribe and sent them dozens of emails to no avail. thanks and good luck in the election.
For deaf and hard-of-hearing children in Ohio, only 14% will graduate from a 4 year college; 1 out of 3 will not even graduate high-school with a diploma. The problem - deaf and hard-of-hearing children don't have a pathological problem; rather, they have a communication problem. A communication problem is solved by better education policy. 50% of the solution is reaching the 0 - 5 year olds and their families. How? Regional Infant Hearing Programs need to be funded NOT cut by 65% in 2 yrs.
Everyone here seems to be focused on one criterion - student test scores. Any fair evaluation system should include skills and utilization of those skills, along with other performance-based criteria such as certifications. Surely, no one can possibly believe and say with a straight face that tenure and cost of living should be the only criteria for pay increases.
This will polarize the have's and have nots even further .. If I'm a talented young teacher and my lively hood is paid to my students test scores, why would I stay at in inner city/low income district. White flight will turn into bright flight as all the talented educators go to where the test scores are likely to be favorable. The kids who need it the most will once again be left behind. Besides the fact that as a conservative, the big government component of dictating pay to local school board
Could you have asked this before SB5? Teachers cannot solve poverty, mental illness, dysfunctional families, medical problems, substance abuse, child abuse, obesity and the list goes on. Our students come to school with these issues and come from families who need help with them. When will we open our eyes to the fact that students are not ready to learn or cannotuntil they get help with these things. Please don't put this on teacher's shoulders with merit pay based on test scores.
How about this ... let the teachers democratically elect representatives to negotiate common sense employment contracts with local school boards that take into account experience and performance.
Here's an idea: When I get kids in high school that can read on grade level....not 2nd or 3rd grade level, then maybe they'll do better on tests. Not to mention social promotion in the lower grades is screwing up the works in the upper grades. Finally, I cannot manage to get roughly half my freshmen to show up with paper and pencil; forget about homework. If they don't care or can't perform at a high school level, then we're always going to suck on the OGT.
I have an even better idea! The Governor's pay (& benefits) should be based on whether unemployment numbers actually go down, and MUST include those who fall of the rolls of unemployed, but continue to be unemployed. Additional key data in determining the governor's salary, should be the statistics reflecting crime, and the numbers of citizens who fall below the poverty line. No "Assistants to the Governor" should be hired; we cannot financially support two governors.
If teachers' pay will be determined by students' test scores, how are you going to attract and retain teachers for schools that test poorly?
Also, how do you justify attacking teachers wages while giving pay raises for your entire cabinet over the levels that Governor Strickland established? It gives the appearance that your officials have less civic responsibility than educators.
You get kids that don't care and most never will then there are not enough teachers to give more individual attention. Teachers never win when politics is in the mix.
The problem is that sometimes it's not the teachers fault. If the students are brought up to care about their school work then they just won't no matter how good of a teacher they have. Punishing teacher who are stuck with the non-accelerated kids or are teaching in a lower class area should is just wrong. This bill only favors students and teachers from the high class area and could be detrimental to our education system here in Ohio.
This teacher is very concerned and I'm going to participate by voting Kaisch out of office and voting NO on issue 2.

Mr. Ohio Governor, for the love of god, please stop saying "the criteria is." "Criterion" is a singular word, "criteria" a plural word...
