I watched this move this morning and have noticed what seems like a possible reference to dr.no, when fiona volpe drives bond to his hotel, when they exit the car he says, "Ive allways been a bit of a nervous passenger" and then he says, "no, some men just dont like to be taken for a ride". In dr.no he tells his "chaufer" to "take me for a ride" and then pulls a gun on him stating that he's "a very nervous passenger"

You can definitely say that the audience got their money's worth with 'Thunderball', but it's more a case of a lot of individual elements that don't add up to a totally satisfying whole. This film also 'feels' a bit odd: it's almost as if another production company made a Bond clone movie.

I finally had to watch this. I like this movie but it's certainly not the greatest in the series. It really needed an edit in those underwater scenes. Fiona has to be one of the best villains in the series. Only Rosa and Xenia are better.

10/10 for me, Thunderball is my favorite Bond film.

The story is better than most give it credit for, as while the whole "hijacking nuclear weapons" plot may be trite now, Thunderball did it first. I also think Adolph Celi gives a great performance as the pompous Largo, and he's a much better villain than Dr. No. Oh, and Domino is a better Bond girl than any that came before, and the first one to have a real character arc, and I actually gave a shit whether she lived or died.

Though, Thunderball is not in my bottom three, which are the three Bond films which most critics agree are the worst, but here's my order:

1. Die Another Day

2. The Man With The Golden Gun

3. Diamonds Are Forever

Those three are just awful, but this was my opinion. I understand, NecroVMX that you have a strong disliking to those three as well.

This movie reviewer is an idiot.Thunderball exceeded as an even bigger smash than even Goldfinger when it came out.More and more since this movie was made.the primary goal of action/suspense movies has been to out do the previous hit movie in the special effects department and this brainless fool complains about the special effects!This lowgrade critic is not a true Bond fan or he would realize ,as most do,that this was the greatest Bond film ever made.After the remake,they planned on a third!

This was definitely not the best, and could have been much better. I actually found Thunderball to be the most boring Bond film, next to Tomorrow Never Dies. It's OK, there are some memorable scenes, but most of it is standard Bond fare. This is my least favorite Bond of the 60's. I give it a 5.5/10.

@lloydee1983 Excellent analogy.Personally though,I rate Thunderball as the best ,From Russia With Love as no. 2 ,and Goldfinger as the third.We all have our personal preferences ,but at least I know you're a true Bond fan and understand cinematic art (of course I'm assuming you're qualifying Connery as the true Bond and may be overlooking the fact that you seem to be possibly limiting your rankings to his movies only).At any rate,ALL the Bond movies are good,a rarity for sequels of any kind.

My favourite bond film of the classic era (62-89) is OHMSS and favourite bond movie of the modern day (95-present) is casino royale. But only those three connery movies mentioned would be in my top 10. Dr no was too gritty and basic (lack of gadgets) but hey it was 1962. Found you only live twice boring and kinda pointless. Daf is prob the funniest of the series but a crap film.

This was the second one I got to see as a kid (after Dr No).

I think it's a very memorable film.

I also think it was very VERY ambitious in its underwater scenes - way ahead of its time.

There has never been another film before or since which shows two armies doing battle underwater.

For that reason, I think this film is criminally underrated - even by Bond aficionados.

Connery was amazing in Thunderball and so was Celi as Largo. I didn't enjoy the film as much as the others though. It was too long and the plot was pretty thin. It also wasn't particularly memorable compared to Goldfinger.

Still, it's Bond, so I love it!

Emillio Largo IS an true James Bond Villain, Hands down. You have to love Adolfo Celi.

- First Bond movie filmed in Cinemascope.

- First time all the 00 Agents are seen together.

- First time Bond is shot.

- First time a villain has sharks.

Well, I think its one great Bond Movie. I think you are right with what you said about the stunning Underwater Battles. But I disagree with two things: Domino is an great Bond Girl. I disliked Pussy Galore. And Largo was an great Villain. He is not as good as Goldfinger but better than Klebb, after all, Klebb hasnt much screentime in FRWL.

This movie establishes SPECTRE as a world threat. If Austin Powers parodies it twenty years later, it is a tribuyte to something that was cutting edge at the time. Steal nuclear weapons in 1965, that was fucking unbelievable at the time

Why so much hate for thunderball? This movie totally brings SPECTRE to a level all "evil organizations" still try to live up to. They stole two nuclear weapons from NATO! True, Largo is not the best villain, but the extent and determination of this terrorist organization is so much before Al-Quaeda that it is scary how many different ways they tried to blackmail western democracies. This wasn't about sexy locales, this was about Nuclear Blackmail!

It was a letdown after Goldfinger and I agree with the 6/10. A lot of it was shot in the dark, the underwater scenes were overlong and Largo wasn't as good as Goldfinger. However, the teaser was first rate, the scene at SPECTRE's headquarters was excellent and the budget was well spent on locations, but I just found it rather bloated.
