  • Arigatou gosaimasu :D !

  • you look kinda naughty whenever you try to invite somebody ;D very helpful, thanks XD

  • Why put such misinformation out there? Japanese DO NOT count that way - they count starting with the thumb and pull their fingers into their hands until the fist in closed. Have you ever even been to Japan!!!?

  • @Hollins23

I kind of LIVE there? ;-)

And actually, there are a number of ways to count. Yes, what you describe is another, although, it seems to be kind of what old-school people do...

  • @JLC981 Sorry but I have to agree with Hollins here. you are putting wrong information. Most Japanese DO count the way that Hollins mentioned. Trust me I've probably been in this country longer than you have!

And then the way you use you fingers to point to yourself is wrong, it should be just one. I think you should really take more time to observe the Japanese. They don't "chop" to bust through people, they put a hand to "apologize" .

  • @Nermal83

I'm really not interested in comparing with others how long I've been in Japan. Some people live here for decades and manage to get by in their own cultural bubble, so that is a poor yardstick to measure how much they know about the culture.

I reiterate, there are a number of ways to count, I know which one Hollins is talking about, but that is just one way.

I'll give you I should have used one finger; I was trying to give the basic idea.

    "Put a hand?" Please elaborate.

  • @Nermal83

If you and/or Hollins think you can do better, you're more than welcome to make a video and post it. I'm always open and don't mind at all to be shown "how it's done." ;-)

  • @Hollins23 uhhh I know this is a year old but i have two cents! both of you are correct. the way he demonstrated in the film is how they count when they are counting for someone else. Starting with the thumb is when they count for themselves. If you wanted to say you wanted seven ... apples... to someone, the way protrayed in this video is correct.

  • excelelnt, i was wondering about alot of these !! thx for posting !!

  • ものすごく濃いですね。怖いよ。

  • じゃ、見なくていいから。。。

  • wow very useful! ありがとう!

  • All cultures have hand gestures, you just have to look for them.

  • @JLC981

it is in the definition of a language : "a form of communication identifiable and shared by members of a group, system, or arbitrary symbolic sounds and gestures shared by members of a community" - so you see that language also includes gestures, that is why all cultures have gestures (since they all have languages :) )

  • I wish we had kickass gestures like that too

  • ahthankyou!

  • Very informative! The drinking one was funny. Japan: Let's go drink. America: That person is drunk. あリガとうございます!!

  • Very interesting video,arigatou gozaimashita (^_^)

  • You actually just helped me answer a comprehension question on my renshuu. Thanks :D

  • too much interesting!

    how do you know that??

  • Oh and you seem to have very "native speaker" facial expressions, i.e. it really seems you "get" the meaning of the gestures from the way your facial movement coincides with the gestures. I'm not sure I'm making myself clear ;)

  • Very nice and useful!

  • Good video, nice work. You looked a little bit nervous but you did great! Perhaps a little more intro + ending in your next video and you're all done! But it was nice to watch =)

  • hahaha the "cutting through the crowds" made me laugh out loud! and inviting someone to eat is beautiful :)

  • eeeh, omoshiroi desuuu! XD domo arigatou ^_^

    todoro,arsenchinshindesu ;)

  • eeeh, omoshiroi desuuu! XD domo arigatou ^_^

    todoro,arsenchinshindesu ;)

  • perhaps the 'come here' looking so much like a dismissive waving away is because the back and forth is representative of gathering things up into one's arms?

one of these days' I'll take the good advice and stop thinking out loud :)

thanks for all the videos, I'm going to Japan in Februray and I've found them very helpful!

    doomo arigatoo gozaimasu

  • iie! dou itashimashite!

Most western people look at the 'come here' as dismissive. Some, in the beginning, might even take offense to it. Just know that it is in fact a friendly gesture.

Dewa. Nihongo mo benkyou shite ne!

  • It'll take some getting used to :)

  • I wasn't listening to what you were saying @ that point so I thought it was to tell someone to go away! I had to watch that part over...

    ~DEF~

  • Good: I liked your video! :) you mime those gestures very well and your facial expressions are funny! 5stars

  • Arigatou gozaimasu! This is really helpful! Its a lot easier to understand when you watching it then when your reading it.

  • very interesting - domoo arigatoo!

  • iie! Dou itashimashite. ^_^

  • Fantastic! I love it! Thanks for making this video.
