Butoh inspired yes, at best...I lived in japan for 4 years and was heavily into Butoh and went to workshops etc. For me, and just my opinion, Butoh doesn't exist anymore. It was a time-place specific movement in the late 50's and 60's, instigated by Ohno and Hijikata as a reaction to the US takeover, changes in Japanese society, and a scoff at modern Western dance esp ballet...after that it became diluted, and 'cool' to do the 'Butoh' thing with white make-up and a bit of writhing around...
I was fortunate enough to see Vanessa perform last night, and this video doesn't do her justice. She's an amazing dancer, and seeing it in person is a completely different experience. Her movements are so fluid and she pours out an energy that's like none other.
My apologies friends, but your lack of information on this is astonishing. Let me assure you as one of Vanessa's fortunate students, that what she embodies is a spiritual aspect of Butoh that much of it lacks. Few in the world of Butoh have such a ritualistic side to them, and this is a part of every movement she does.
You may not appreciate this, and that is your choice, but to say this lacks the spiritual is beyond a farce.
Dammit! Ever notice all the posted vids that feature male performers, how their junk is stuck all up in your face, yet the vids with female dancers are all shot from 40 yards away, and the camera man hasn't a fucking clue how to work the zoom feature?

Butoh? This ain't Butoh. It lacks the duende, spiritual element, the authentic quality of Butoh.

I agree, this is not Butoh! It is the boring hippy stuff I have seen time and time again, yawn. Sorry.

predictable modern dance movement.. self serving choreography in white makeup. Not butoh. Maybe butoh inspired at best.
