According to an Internet poll where people voted on their favorite and least favorite voices, Howard Cosell got #8 on the Worst Voices List whereas Dick Vitale got #9. Where's the sense in that?
@YourFaceWillDie468 You have to wonder how many of those that voted actually grew up or were alive and watching Howard announcing on Monday nights. Those that did and still voted him #8 worst voice...May the football gods piss in their cereal every Tuesday morning.
Do we have people like howard Cosell anymore? No, the dame way the Sports has no Muhammad alis and Actings and performances has no Frank Sinatras anymore. Our Communities are really in decline. It is sad , so sad to whitness this
I remember well Howard Cosell & his musings upon the game of football & upon life in general...When I was a youth, I remember "Dandy" Don Meredith withering Cosell with a well-timed "Awwww, Howard..." I have read "Cosell" & I Never Played The Game" and I regard Howard as a legend in the field! Not bad for a former lawyer!
I'm in between those on here who hate Cosell and those who are ready to carry him around like a rajah in old India. Howard was intelligent, informed, and interesting. He was also (at times) frustratingly arrogant, wrong his share of times, and usually unable to admit his fallibility. But on balance, I'll take it! Give me that mix over bland every time. We'll never see anything like the original Monday Night Football broadcast team again. Those were the days.
Cosell was right about fans. I'm sick of them cheering losers like cokehead Hernandez and "Mr. Syringe" Barry Bonds just because they play for their teams. Howard is right about Enberg.
Love Him or hate him he was hands down one of the Best if not THE best. When you think about the landscape today with people like Shannon Sharpe, who was a great football player but got to be one of the worse Broadcasters, I mean the brother can even talk, he talks like Mushmouth from Fat Albert, then you really miss someone like Howard Cosell.
I'm surprised that through the entire interview, Letterman did not ask him about his friendship with Ali? Overall, fun interview with him. R.I.P. Howard
Snorting coke? LOL. Pitcher Steve Howe comes to mind immediately but it might be someone else. Shit, Cosell is right on target. He's probably rolling over in his grave today at what "sports" has become.
I'm pretty sure he was referring to Keith Hernandez as the athlete who got a standing ovation. And I'll guess that he was referring to Yankees fans booing the Canadian national anthem, as the Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays were in a race for the AL East in 1985.
Thank you for posting this. Perhaps more years need to pass before we recognize how bold and brilliant Howard Cosell was. There is no one like him in sports today. His opposition to "jockocracy" in the 1970's was was a a mere cautionary tale at the time. The commentators back then were articulate and cerebral compared to the mush mouthed, idiotic athletes that are on the air today. I wish there was more footage of Howard on YouTube, both as a sports commentator and as an interviewee.
So very true. Can you imagine him sitting in on a sports show with Terry Bradshaw?
I always thought we were supposed to move forward as time passed, but seems like we going backwards by leaps and bounds in all areas of life today. Howard did the best interviews I think, and was always well versed in his subject and very humorous without being childish about it. What a great man!
The man was a giant among men.If you don't agree, you haven't read that book. What he said, back then, applies today. They should make it into a motion picture.
Is he still dead?
If he isn't, please don't tell me.

If he saw all the dumb washed up late 80s/early 90s guys on MLB/NFL networks he'd roll over in his grave.

He was spot on about Costas. I think of all the guys out there now, the only one that can even come close to being in the same league is Costas.

What was he referring to when he talked about Canada getting booed? Why? And who was the athlete who got a standing ovation?
