Why are boat launches of this scale never televised or mentioned by the british media! We should be proud of them! Prince william and Kate launched a RNLI dingy the other day...not quite as impressive.

More needs to be done to encourage more british children to become engineers, boat launches would certainly do it.

@monkeybike they got a bit of coverage but as you point out the media devotes more time to what socks Kate Middleton is wearing. Nothing against Kate but engineering projects are slightly more important to the UK. Kids these days don't really know what engineering is all about. Which is a shame because engineering brings in real money to the economy.

There are less jobs than people. Are these people worthless layabouts because they were born? Should they be on the street? The fact is we probably have enough resources to field the kind of navy our nation is supposed to field we just don't have enough 'special paper' with pretty pattens on... Actually most money is even less tangible it only exists as electronic credit.

@MrDeano324 to be fair the likelyhood of the Argentines having another try at the falklands is unlikely but even if they do the falklands are much better protected than in 1982. There's an army garrison of 1000 men, 4 of the best multirole fighters in the world (Eurofighter typhoon) and possibly a few Type 23's and maybe a Type 45 to contend with, never mind the RN nuclear submarines probably there. The Argentines wouldn't have the strength to take the Falkland's in the first place.

@TowerHamletsNeil Great vid, I just wish it was true. Queen Elizabeth mothballed and maybe even sold to France!, and Prince of Wales without jet capabilities untill 2020. And with Ark Royal scraped, and Ilustrious in 2015, we practically have no carrier fleet. I pray for Britain that theres not a major war between now and 2020, alothough the news today suggets the Argentines are gearing up for another Falklands try. And I fear this time they may succeed.

@MrDeano324 to be fair the carriers will have no aircraft because the F35 (carrier variant) is shit, late, over budget and over weight.

No idea why it is so difficult to create a vertical take-off and landing aircraft given we did it back in the 1960s. Without computers.

@0mega113 Well said! The RN is under strength-a disgraceful state of affairs considering Britain has primarily always been a major naval power. However, please remember, especially with an election looming, Labour are much more interested in feather bedding layabouts with benefits & FREE housing, as opposed to defending the nation!

We'll get 6. But to put that into perspective France (which is one of only 4 true blue water navies) only has 2 comparable horizon destroyers. And these babies cost £1billion each because of the tech on board.

@madbob73 The RN deserves to have at least 15-20 Type 45's me thinks. That would put Britain back on the map as a naval power. I am convinced that the two carriers will be scrapped in order to save money to pay the HUGE debt back that the inept Brown has run up. What a twat that oaf is!

@nrjelley are you kidding?, they retired the whole harrier wing, they retired the flagship HMS Ark Royal, they pushed the F-35's back to 2020!!!, they mothballed the Queen Elizabeth supercarirer, and the sister ship Prince of wales will enter service in 2018 and wont have aircraft till 2020. That leaves us with no carrier aircraft capabillity for 10 years, over 30,000 armed forces jobs gone, and countless RAF bases closed. They fucked up the cuts big time. We barley have a military.

It's a Type 45 (T45) Destroyer but destroyers get a 'D' pennant number.

The first 6 ships get numbers D32 to D35.
