That aside, it's easy to think that someone you see on TV and in magazines all the time got more in the bank than they know what to do with, but I can promise you that's not the case with J. Monae. Neither of her records have gone gold and she's with Diddy, whose known for stealing his artists' money as much as anything else hes done.

To me "selling her soul" would imply that she's letting corporate interests dictate the direction of her work, but she wasn't even singing one of her own songs in the commercial. If anything, the drones who go to the Gap are gonna be inspired to seek her out which will push a performer with true artistic vision further into a mainstream that desperately needs her

I am not an advertising agent, but my understanding of their behavior is to associate their brands with celebs to either a. gain increased market share in that demographic or b. ensure that a respected person (ethically mined), is seen endorsing their product. In both cases of Gap and Coca Cola this is what is going on here. It makes it very difficult for her to pursue an agenda with any credibility having represented these companies....
