  • She kinda went out of tone for a moment there... It's not easy to do so without hearing the instruments though...

  • @dalekdude180 the song is called smile.you should also listen to the michael jackson version.

  • what was that song at 1:08?

  • Todays music industry needs artists like JM to redefine the boundaries, smash the stereotypes and question the public's conditioning of what is 'cool'. She is a true artist so thank you for sharing your talent JM!!! <3 <3 <3

  • I LOOOOOOVEEEEEEE U Janelle!

  • Who's the dude on the gutiar?

  • @agurl55 kalendo or how it's spelled :)

  • Pure genius she and her crew of musicians are.

  • @djpdoubles have you seen her live? I have and you're a fucking idiot for saying she's nothing new

  • @djpdoubles YOUR FUCKING DUMB.

  • @carmelazelia You're* not so smart yourself.

  • @Annamandabella haha how about "shut the fuck up".

  • @carmelazelia Awe, did I embarrass you? No need to get so nasty, it's just asinine to insult somebody's intelligence while making your own grammatical errors. You know, just saying. lol

  • @carmelazelia actually you didn't. I also did not need a teacher's pet to help me with my terrible grammatical errors.

  • @djpdoubles what????hip hop james brown??? he was all Soul and funk janelle monae may be not something new but it is new to find someone like this girl that its just talented without being naked or with the same beats of the pop or hip hop we hear today its good to see oldie style

  • BRILLIANT!!!

  • @MrBananas333 No problem... this is actually turning out to be a good, intelligent debate (on youtube of all places!) But to address your point, I've worked my share of corporate jobs as a customer service rep. It's something I'm proud of nor is it something I'd choose to do again, but is that really reason for people to question my credibility if I were to pursue my own agenda (artistic or otherwise)? I don't see why musicians should be held to different standards.

  • why d hell is the guitarist fingernails painted?

  • @chinnie90 who cares, he's brilliant! you gotta love people for the art and the content of their heart, not judge by narrow definitions of appearance...

  • Is there ANYTHING that can make me like Janelle Monae less?

  • At Last, a new artist that inspires me.

  • Hey to Janelle Monae and all her fans....can you please tell me....amazing music and talent aside....how can you inspire change in the world and then do a commercial for GAP - who use sweatshop labour and exploit children through inhumane working practices....GAP's record speaks for itself and it is not hard to find out the truth about them....Janelle should know better....any explanations happily heard....music and performances are great am certainly not knocking this...thanks

  • @MrBananas333 its 2011, you cant make music without endorsements

  • @magickfaerie Hi thanks for your thoughts on this post. If an artists has morals than the art will speak for itself and endorsing unethical products is certainly not required. Lets face facts here it was done for the money - a big pay off for her managers and her...Just don't crap on about wanting to change the world and inspire people then endorse products like coca cola and GAP. Her music is great and so are all the artists that work with her, no issues there..just drop the double standards!

  • @MrBananas333 There's a clip on youtube of Saul Williams explaining his decision to allow Nike to use one of his songs that you might be interested in. That aside, it's easy to think that someone you see on TV and in magazines all the time got more in the bank than they know what to do with, but I can promise you that's not the case with J. Monae. Neither of her records have gone gold and she's with Diddy, whose known for stealing his artists' money as much as anything else hes done.

  • @MoonmanCometh Hi thanks for the reply. I checked out the video you have suggested, interesting - I would still never buy a pair of Nikes sorry. In regards to the money side of things for artists, I am quite aware of what you see on stage is not how it may appear to be, i.e. wealthy performers with big bank balances. If it was not done for the money then that makes it even worse that she would sell her soul so early in her career in exchange for a little exposure and a few dollars...cheers

  • @MrBananas333 Honest question... do you really think any of J. Monae's fans actually went to the Gap because they saw her in the ad? To me "selling her soul" would imply that she's letting corporate interests dictate the direction of her work, but she wasn't even singing one of her own songs in the commercial. If anything, the drones who go to the Gap are gonna be inspired to seek her out which will push a performer with true artistic vision further into a mainstream that desperately needs her

  • @MoonmanCometh Thanks for reply. I see your point. I am not an advertising agent, but my understanding of their behavior is to associate their brands with celebs to either a. gain increased market share in that demographic or b. ensure that a respected person (ethically mined), is seen endorsing their product. In both cases of Gap and Coca Cola this is what is going on here. It makes it very difficult for her to pursue an agenda with any credibility having represented these companies....

  • @MrBananas333 In other words, who REALLY hustled who with that Gap ad?

  • quite comparing her to andre, shes her own person

  • @hanjipapa quit misspelling quit, quit is its own word

  • i say a combo of gwen stefani and james brown

  • nice acoustic guitar accompanyment!!

  • she needa stop pullin her hair sooo tight, poor edges!! she bout to have a bald fade, lol

  • @SIRGAGA123 lmao

  • @SIRGAGA123 It might not be as tight as it appears...

  • @SIRGAGA123 it is getting a bit skimpy....

  • @SIRGAGA123 its so true and her hair is so pretty too :(

  • Very eloquent, and her voice is milky...like ella or sarah! She's awesome!

  • I hope she gets bigger. Like i only see GaGa's sucess is cause she sold sex, you can't deny it. Her first 3 videos were pushing sex, tanned and looked very fake.

If Janelle makes it i would be sooo happy to know that you can be fully clothes and be popular, but sadly i feel like my youth can't appreciate intellectual artist who doesn't have to put her pussy on someone's sideburns.

  • @hco323 i love janelle and her style; but i don't think lady gaga just sells sex; i think her videos are about how female artists are pushed to sell their music through sex, and she's like-you want flesh? i'll give you flesh-and then I will make everything crazy and MESS WITH YOUR MIND! I think they are both interesting smart women. but janelle is a better musician.

  • @moremi123 "she's like you want flesh?" huh?

  • @hco323 ok let me explain this again; lady gaga seduces the male viewer by doing the usual things that so many female singers do (wearing very few clothes, etc), but then rather than providing the male viewer with the usual sexual fantasy, she turns that fantasy in unusual directions--her videos often tells stories about violent female revenge on men, for example.

  • @moremi123 okay agree..but thats def after her 3rd music video how her sex apeal apear to say much more than flesh. in this order... lets dance, dirty money (video wasnt big) and poker face. Her image on video was just sex, bleach blond hair with super caked on make up plus irange skin, but outside the video thats where the art form of lady gaga begin. I am not saying i will compare those too.. i just want Janelle to be bigger than GaGA

  • @moremi123 Gaga doesn't just sell sex,she sells originality..I guess some artist are smart enough to incorporate sexuality into their art (believe me when MJ was grabbing his cock onstage and in videos every 5 minutes,he knew he was was 'selling sex')

  • @mysterymediacorp yes, that's kind of what i'm saying. and i don't think using your sexuality as part of your performance is necessarily a bad thing, but i do think that right now, for female singers, there is a very boring insistence on being hot in a very particular way. its like the stepford wives but with a porn aesthetic. that's why i love lady gaga AND janelle monae, they are doing something different that's uniquely theirs!

  • I love her pompadour!!

  • SMILE IS ONE OF THE BEST SONGS SHES DONE, I LOVE EVERY THING BY HER BUT THAT ONE GIVES ME GOOSE BUMPS HER VOCALS ARE SO CAPTIVATING, I LOVE HER

  • man, here voice is just a cool when she's not singin as when she is.

  • She's incredible. i mean, just when i thought the Music was gonna get crappier by the day, she pops up. She needs more recognition cause she's hella awesome!

  • i have never been a celebrity glue but she glue me . if crazy is intoxicating then she is crazily intoxicating.she is loved here.

  • the chick holding the interview looks like she is a complete idiot. She cant even comprehend JM.

    :/

  • GOD i LOVE HER!!!!!

she is just herself and no one else!!!

SHE IS A MASTER MIND AND A TRUE INSPIRATION!!

i pray to God that i get to meet her one day

    she is my inspiration

    THANK YOU SOOO MUCH JANELLE

you are soooo young yet you totally understand the world and life itself

    keep it up

    you are an icon

  • ...."Get rid of the category that divide us"...Amen!!

  • I get the chills when I hear great singing!

  • love ha!!!!!

  • thats why i love beyonce...she doesnt limit herself in genres.......i effin love janelle monae for her fearlessness (artistically) and her energy

  • Janelle has been doing her thing since and before the "Idlewild" movie w/ Outkast. Puff heard her and decided to sign her but, she been signed to the Wonderland Art Society. And Puff is more of manager in that relationship. He said himself this isnt the Bad Boys of the 90's. GO COP THE ARCHANDROID BTW!

  • W0W

  • am not afan but she is good

  • wow!!! who is this girl?! She is so so unique!

  • amazing woman right here. I had to use every energy i possess to restrain myself from responding to an ignorant person below me who has nothing real positive nor productive to say about this girl but hey .... they'll always be those people in this world who always wanna raise hell talk about something but yet when it comes to doing something productive & positive they're probably no where to be found. .... anyhow, love this girl's talent

  • She can rely sing unlike alot of these entertainers out here now.

  • Well, guess there always has to be an idiot posting comments. I love Janelle by the way.

  • Twitter/email Ellen DeGeneres to get Janelle Monae on her show :D!!

  • Have you ever heard of Frankenstein's daughter?

Well she's Diddystein's daughter. Nothing more that a Pop Culture scion.

  • No Diddy, no Janelle. Right?

  • @djpozz You are thoroughly incorrect. Monáe was already performing and recording when Combs signed her to his label. There is a great deal more to her than you are willing to see.

  • @loveradiator

in the entertainment business it ain't where one is from, it's where one is. BTW, I perform and record also. Don't be niave, Combs is her boss. And Janelle does what her boss tells her to do...just like you.

  • Dumb interviewer BTW.

  • @djpozz I was talking to Janelle

  • @djpozz what? practically everyone you mentioned sings r&b. r&b isn't hip-hop.

  • @djpozz

    pander

  • @djpozz It aint about pandering to a GaGa crowd, its about being different and performing for people who love and appreciate live music and art which is ie college kids, festival supporters etc...And as far as if she is performing white folks what difference does that make?Shes FREE and she can perform for whoever but lets look her vocals dancing and style is that Black or White? Do you even know? Well its cats like you that hold back other blks an for what? Only coons think blacks are "black"

  • @kingofdaundaworld

"only coons think blacks are "black"" ????????? LOL You are very confused dude.

  • out what you was going to reply back,lol...Anyway its squashed I already "seen" the "world" your living in, "Im black, black people are?" And thats why I reference the coon mentality of not letting people be who they want to be, and that one blacks makes "us' look bad and all that bs...Please. For clarity my statement is if you stereotype and put people in a box due to the color of thier skin YOU are APART of the problem....Know that...

  • @rockhills No, R&B is not Hip Hop. You could argue that Hip Hop is a subset of R&B, but not the other way around. While there is great deal of overlap today R&B predates Hip Hop by a long shot.

  • @djpozz She never said she's claiming hip hop (watch the video again, she doesn't mention hip hop at all). The name of the show is called Hip hop 101...I'm assuming that's how you got confused.

  • @azungusanyera

the title of the vid is hip hop 101....

  • @djpozz . Yes it is.

  • Awesome talent. She's where it's at. You don't get true talent like this too often anymore.

  • love u janelle

  • Comment removed

  • Damn she is beautiful...and with her talent, it just makes her beauty skyrocket off the charts.

  • artist like her are hard to come by. but if you like her you'll love a lot of the kansas city musicians, check em out. Janelle monae is from there.

  • I am so ecstatic for real at this artist at first i was like jazmine sullivan is so great but than i was like i'm still missing something, than God shows me the impossible to man. He combines classical, christian, jazz, soul,r&b,operaetc. I've never heard anything like it.

  • Next time ask for a shorter interviewer, Janelle! You're sooooo rad. I love what you're doing. You're so... together. And your voice. Ohhh, your voice. Puts a smile on my face.

  • love it

  • Tight Vid. Yall need to check out Vthov's music though if you haven't... If you want to hear some good music, search "Vthov" and you won't be dissappointed. Straight up.

  • i was there at this performance and she kicked soooooooooooooooo much ass, i love her, can't wait to see her again but maybe in a little bit more private venue, like the house of blues or something

  • She is very pretty! Brillian, different...kinda reminds me of Andre 3000 but a female version lol

  • @starshegs really? she reminds me of a modern day aretha franklin/james brown

  • @starshegs i always compare her to a cross between andre 3000 and erykah badu

  • @RhapsodicAddiction- true.

but i also see james brown and michael jackson

she is truly amazing and talented

    so enlightened

  • @asiariddick i agree

  • @starshegs i agree..With a little Lauren Hill

  • @starshegs exactly, she shoulda just named herself Andrea 3000.
