Why do you people hate based on a youtube video? I actually think Mr.Dylan is an exceptional tubist; he is a pretty good player and his interpretations feature alot of musicality that many newer musicians have yet to understand.
this is really helpful. i am working on this piece with my high school band and it gets rather frustrating with how muddy i sound playing this sometimes
I think he is a good musician and who are u to judge who is really a professional or not I've heard of him way back as a good musician and anyways who in there right mind would buy a $20,000 tuba and there not a professional or once was a professional and don't want to get rid of their horns obviously your not a good enough musician to not know any great tubists besides those few you named so just shut up and leave the guy alone and keep your negative comments to yourself.
i doubt he used to play pro, its just something his written. And I dont need to put out videos of my self playing, dont need comments on my playing from people who dont know what thery're talking about. I have teachers to do that.
That is an excerpt from Paul Hindemith's second movement from his Symphonic Metamorphsis Turnadot Scherzo.
He used to play in a lot of movies in LA, he was a student of Tommy Johnson, and won some good gigs......trust me I am a graduate student in tuba performance.
if ur a graduate tuba student, u should hear that this guy sux playing. every tubist ive met that has watched som of tubadylans movies thinks he sux. AND HE HAS FUCKING NEVER PLAYED IN ANY FILM, REX MARTINS, ROGER BOBO ETC, THATS PEOPLE WHO PLAYS IN FILMS, U IDIOT!
May I suggest false fingerings for the low e and f at the end of the first little section? It's helped me a ton to get it nice and clean down there, and since it goes by so quick the intonation on them isn't a problem at all.
I can't imagine how rich it sounds when you are actually there to listen. Remember people, this is a crappy camera mic, not a 1000 dollar recording mic. Of course it doesn't sound as great as it could, it's the microphones fault, not him! This guy is a pro.
Actually, picking the fingers up off of the valve and then slamming them down is called staccato fingers and it actually ensures smoothness in sound by shortening the time when the valve is being moved. Its a great technique especially when slurring.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
what? so staccato fingers are good for slurring...u'v lost me. It is generally bad technique. no slamming should be involved! makes things noisy. I do it a bit, i shouldnt.
I know...surprised me too when I first heard. Sam Pilafian and Pat Sheridan actually recommend this. Noisy valves can be avoided though. But I should have clarified...there IS a difference from stoccato fingers and slamming your fingers. Its also whatever works best for you.
LOL....wow, it looks like a good way to give yourself tendonitis. FYI, Sam Pilafian and Pat Sheridan also recommend practicing with a metronome. They also profess the importance of hitting notes.

I don't know who you're trying to kid. You have never been a professional tuba player. Playing in community orchestra/band isn't professional. I would expect this level of playing to come from an ok high school student. Sell you tubas and stop wasting your time playing.
Here Here to that! People like mr. KMCrawl here dont appreciate the fun of playing an instrument. Who cares if you are proffesional or not. Its a hobby for more people than it is a career. What do you think he does if he finds everything a waste if its not the best? I bet he is the best at being a couch potatoe because of this. Or maybe he just lives on YouTube and critisizes everyone else. Either way........
hi tubadylan! In one post you said you studied the tuba to become an orchestral pro. I'd like to know if you ever took part in an orchestral audition and, if so, you ever went beyond the first round....
Yes and yes. But now I'm a Sabbath observer, and being that I do not work Friday evening through Saturday, I can no longer be an orchestral player. Unless of course I move to Israel, which I'm not planning until Christ's return.
I appreciate this video and agree with drxtuba in that some of the pieces/excerpts that you have played are very good with a lot of positives that such aspiring tubists as myself could learn from. As far as any negative voices are concerned, most professionals are comfortable enough with their playing as to not have to disgrace the art of music by putting down others.
I'm sorry I made that snide comment at musikmachen06. I suppose I do somewhat fall into that category when provoked... In my defense... He started it.
This guy has a good sound, and good technique, that symphonic metamorphis excerpt isnt easy on CC tuba fingering wise, and some of these keys are not easy. The only person on youtube ive heard any better is Oystein Baadsvik. Sk musikmachen06, why dont you record yourself and put your videos on youtube. And im sure being so immature musikmachen06 that ur not a music major, and im sure im better than you
Chill out, bro. I agree he sounds good, and so does Mr. Machen, he just feels threatened. We don't need to be comparing each other... Also, I would suggest checking out some of the videos featuring Nat McIntosh and Roland Szentpali. They are also good.
We're all just having fun here. Maybe passing on a wee bit of knowledge. It sure would be nice if everyone, or even a small percentage of people would criticize with class. But there isn't much class in this dying generation.
I think people actually believe they can impress total strangers by pretending to know what they're talking about better than the poster. Most of these people have no videos of their own.
I tend to save my own critiques (at least the ones including negative comments) for situations when I have my own video of whatever piece posted on the site.
Wow...not only have I never enjoyed listening to a tuba player until now, but I always thought tubas were incapable of playing in tune and you've proven me wrong. :)
It does sound light for what it is, and very clean!
good stuff!! Metamorphosen is really some hard work to do...what tuba do you play? Only "complain" from my part: please put some oil in your valves, its pretty loud when you press them....
that is quite challenging since i would assume it goes lower than the low D and at such a short note, its hard enough as it is playing a short note on a low note. Also quite a bit of octave jumps

Yea, his tone is really good. Its just the microphone that makes his tone sound rough in the beginning. He is pro.
