Everything about this video and song is hilarious. First of all, the video has nothing to do with the song. Then, Oates is basically the most intense person in the world.
One question: What is the meaning behind The Archeology dig site? In this video, I could never figure that out. At any rate, I loved the track, and what it did represent. Nice job, guys!
damnit i LOVE this song, i mean i TOTALLY LOVE it.. but the video just sux to me! It does NOT fit the lyrics to the awesome song..they should've done a video with big hair 80's girls and pretty jock boys slamming locker doors in the high school hallways, and some classmen in the bathroom like..fluffing their bangs and stuff and chicks with hair dryers, and pom poms, etc.. where's the sexualism for the lyrics??? SOMEONE MAKE A HOMEMADE VIDEO PLEASE..Cheesy OR Serious, but like i described, thx!!
Nice "All seeing Eye" Of Rah with the alien looking body lying there at 4:21 seconds... Not to mention Horned Goats and snakes...LOL, Illuminati and masonry. right in our faces even back then...
I think the relationship between the temple in the video and the song is the fact that Hall was studying at a university that is named Temple University.
From 1981 to 1985 Hall & Oates had 6 songs reach a place in the top 50 R&B chart. Oddly, Adult Education was not one of them.
In the early/mid 80s a lot of funk-ish music crossed from the R&B chart to the US / UK pop chart. AND vice-versa.
David Bowie's "Let's Dance" got to # 14 on the US R&B chart in 1983.
U.S. Funk diva Melba Moore's "Love's Comin At Ya" reached #15 on the UK pop chart. A few more examples, the US R&B Chart: "Shock the Monkey", "Miss Me Blind".
You may find that it is worth the time to take a look and listen at the song lists that have been posted to Itunes Ping that meld together rhythmically & stylistically compatible early/mid 80s R&B/funk songs and early/mid 80s synth pop/new wave songs. Lots of music that was either forgotten or not ever learned of but was very enjoyable or would be very enjoyable if it was rediscovered or discovered for the 1st time by people that enjoy this type of music. People like you?
I have researched these music categories for the past 9 years
and I have rediscovered tunes I had forgotten about or I discovered
new tunes that totally deserved the time it took to discover them.
In Itunes Store or Itunes Ping if you use the search terms "electrofunk" (as a single word) or "80s funk" the search result shall produce several lists that have "electrofunk" or "80s funk" in the playlist name in the "Playlist" category at the low left corner of the search result.
These lists have songs that (1) you may have heard before and enjoyed but forgotten or (2) songs that you may enjoy now but you have not heard before. These lists also include album cuts that were not released as singles and songs from lesser known yet solid groups/soloists such as Fatback, Kashif, Laid Back, D Train, Boys Don't Cry, and Dynasty.
Boy, how relevant is this today?! I'll always love Hall and Oates. They had a great sound that was embraced by every culture. I appreciate them for the soulful lyrics and the passion in which they performed. Can you say Classy???
Props to Hall and Oates for their collective body of work, however watching this video makes me think that John Oates was the by-product of morphing Prince and Freddie Mercury, and displayed a bit more intensity in this clip than warranted.
Another classic Hall and Oates tune, the post-apocalyptic "Beyond Thunderdome" in an Egyptian Tomb production design although in vogue at the time, did a disservice to the profoundness of the lyrics.
They could have made a better video that accompanied the song. The lyrics in this song are so accurate about high school. And no, I didn't have a terrible expierence in high school. H&O, the best!
I think this song really nails the pettiness and absurdities of high school. So many high schoolers think that life revolves around their little teen social problems, until the doors of your high school swing open for the last time and the real world is in your face. Been there, and the transition is a bucket of cold water in the face.
Every time I hear this track I immediately think of my first international flight from Adelaide to London in 1984. I was wedged into a 747 window seat and unable to easily get past the sleeping passengers in the seats next to me. I resigned myself to the tedium and just listened to the music channel for 20 or so hours. Adult Education cycled through numerous times and provided welcome relief. Thank you Darryl and John.
In the 80s I liked these guys. In the 90s not so much, wasn't really cool to be into them then. Not until now as an adult am I really respecting their sound & what they did for the music industry.
I played this album to death, literally, went through 3 copies. Loved this song, but never ever understood this video on any level, I had this compilation VHS (ha! VHS!) of all the vids for every song on the album. Don't get it alt ALL! That aside, Daryl Hall is SO UNDERATED as a singer songwriter it's criminal.
IMO, one of their best and most underrated songs. Didn't get alot of playing time either on the radio or MTV (back when MTV was still a killer station). I'm not a huge fan of H&O but when I bought this album, I played this song over and over again.
I wasn't such a big fan back in the day. I was a metal head. It wasn't until I got older that I started listening to the groove these guys wrote into their music. A lot of blues/funk in there. I've gained a whole new respect for their talent.
I'd to give some respect to Oates' work as well, which gets overshadowed by Hall's great voice. Some of my favorite H&O songs are the lesser played ones by Oates (moreso early in their career than later).
Hall & Oates are like a great bottle of wine. These guys and their songs just get better and better with time. I wonder if either of them have ever woken up and said to themselves "I think I'll intentionally write a crappy song today just to see what it feels like." One of the best duos of all time.

@NATIONJ They had just as big of a black following as whites. They were really blue eye soul in the 70`s.Sarah smile, charted higher on the soul charts then the pop charts.
Totems, art and other symbols are so "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" (although this was released the year before?). I half expected to see Tina Turner dance out onto the stage as Auntie Entity, looking for her "Raggedy-man".
They also play this song on the radio, here in Galt !
Hey, I sent You a friend invite ! San Francisco is actually NOT too far from Galt !
Maybe we can meet up one of these weekends ! sharkaranyang is NOT the jealous type, that's why I'm very HAPPY to be romantically involved with him, bro ! So DON'T WORRY, there's NO Bi-Sexual Boyfriend drama around here :)
Well, I was a kid when "it" came out, and now that I'm older I'm finding that my memory does indeed play tricks on me...almost like I'm from a very, very similar parallel universe ;)
So, this "mystery video" I'm thinking of may be a completely different song, or even a completely different band!!
Wasn't this the second version? The less "controversial" one? I seem to recall a version of this song that had Daryl and John hanging out in a High School with all sorts of scantily clad High School Cheerleaders. They pulled it and replaced it with this one (of course, now that original video isn't anything compared to a Britney Spears video in terms of controversy.)
Yes, the video is pretty campy--but Hall & Oates never hesitated to make fun of their own videos...and the song is fantastic. As I recall, they taped this in an abandoned bread factory--trivia I remember from my MTV days!
I'll be damned if Oates dose anything in this video besides look really angry and dance while he swings that thing around. Hall was way cooler and the better half of that duo.
@JMMBenson Most comments i look at, going back quite a ways, say great song, doofy video. That's what I think as well. It's one of those great, timeless songs. The vid looks like it was thrown together on some old Indy Jones movie set.
@Elisabeth 1903 Well, you better put some ketchup on that shoe, because that's not the guys from Chic. I can't exactly tell you who it is, but I can tell you who it's not. I did a little research online because your comment made me curious. I saw the personnel that played on Rock and Soul Pt. 1 and none of those guys' names were mentioned. I can see how you could think it was them. This song does have that Chic, Powerstation sound.
@go339go MTV isn't Music Television Anymore. They NEED 2 change their call letters. I was in front of My TV when the very 1st video was EVER played on MTV. Those were the Dayz,....*smiling*
How did the janitor get to be the high priest guy?

Girl in this video?????? Wow...and WOW

Yes, the video is pretty campy--but Hall & Oates never hesitated to make fun of their own videos...and the song is fantastic. As I recall, they taped this in an abandoned bread factory--trivia I remember from my MTV days!

Love the song, but.....is this how its life is suppose to be after high school? If so i think i'm just gonna stick to wanting to be in high school.

Hall looks like Beavis. Oates looks like Baba Booey.

I'll eat my shoe if it's not Nile Rodgers, Bernard Edwards and Tony Thompson (guitar, bass and drums) of Chic!
