@JessZiegler, My wish too. Did you know that the great Lee Oskar, playing harmonica in this vid, is from Denmark. Who knows, you might even be related! Wouldn't that be a trip?! Peace.
@0oTHEJACKo0, Hi, that is Lonnie Jordan. Here's a music fact that some people may not know: WAR and Eric Burdon were the last musicians to jam with the late great Jimi Hendrix the night before he died. Peace.
It's really too bad all this obscure footage can't be all pulled together for a prototype film documentary on the history of the band WAR. Too many hurdles as to copyright and legal issues would bog this down for years. But someone should step up to the plate and pitch the idea anyway. We're all getting old fast and this should be documented. Everyone else (read: other well-known bands) have their stories out there...why not WAR ? Jerry Goldstein take note ! The fan's are hungry...well ?
@richardvollin This really needs to happen. Maybe first a screenplay about the Burdon's joining of war and how it all ended. I'm going to take to my agent ...
I guess I have to put in my two cents. I hate it when we have to get a lecture whenever anyone anywhere says he/she prefers another band more than the Beatles. Sorry, I do not care that the Fab Four wrote more songs, is more popular, have a bigger influence on other bands, etc., Eric's voice speaks to my heart, no one in the Beatles can move me this much.
@pscotmo Oh my good person! The Beatles may have been a wonderful phenomenon, writing and performing beautiful music, however, Burdon is another genre entirely! You cannot really compare the two. Burdon is in a league of his own, one of the best soulful sounds of that decade along with Gary Brooker from Procul Harum, Steve Winwood from Spencer Davis Group, etc. Give them a listen and I think you'll know why Popacelli said that.
@gudgurlmolly I did not compare any one to the other. Maybe you need to take reading comprehension classes. I made an accurate statement on a negative comment written by a musical ignoramus. Having been a working classic rock muscian for 30 years, from Maine to Florida to California, I probably have worn out more copies of everyone you mentioned than you ever will. The only reason ANYONE would call The Beatles "overrated" is pure musical stupidity and ignorance. Their catalogue is untouchable.
@pscotmo Gee, sorry. No need for a put down! Obviously, with your vast experience and knowledge of music from one end of the country to the other, or, is it three ends of the country? or no, not that either cause I'm not really getting what you said, or am I, because I'm not really reading this right, I think. I'm thinking, just thinking mind you(and then again, maybe I'm not thinking) that no one else can have an opinion because, if my comprehension is right, you are a musical genius. Bye.
@kenrmcallister Burdon was a great singer and frontman, but that's overstating the case for him. Alan Price was the main force behind The Animals musically and with WAR he just joined a band that already existed. He's written a few good songs, but he was never same league as a songwriter and most of what he's done since WAR has been dire. Like many artists, he's very good at what he does, but he needs someone else to give him a context equal to his talent.
@BlackMonk66 I may be wrong, but I don't believe Eric Burdon ever considered himself anything more than a frontman, a singer, or a song stylist. And he was absolutely awesome at those jobs. As far as Alan Price being the "main force" behind The Animals....well, I respectfully disagree, especially considering the fact that he left the Animals in early 1965.
@jml1163 Agreed, he was awesome at those jobs. I was answering someone who said he was in the same league as The Beatles and Stones, who were also great songwriters and had a stronger musical conception.
When I say Price was the main force in The Animals, I'm talking about the first group, distinct from "Eric Burdon &..." Price was on all but the last album of that group and he was the musical director and arranger for them, as well as the primary instrumentalist.
My wife told me that she did not know that Eric was ever with War, I swear I have said "Eric Burden and War" a thousand times in her presence. I always think three things when I think of Eric, The Animals, War, What a phenomenal singer. Way ahead of his time.
@retrofever1969 I would be all in on that, right there with you. War WAS the soundtrack to the late sixties and early seventies. Great musicians all. I had a dream Hendrix didn't die and played with War and Eric, wish I never woke up from that one.
@Trexter42 That "cheap mood ring" isn't really a mood ring. Eric has had that ring through many years. You can see it in the Spill the wine video from myBeatclub. Look between 2:39 and 2:57. He is wearing the same ring in the River of Blood video on magusmagic7 channel. Look around 1:05. It looks darker because the stage lights are predominately red. Later the ring can be seen on the 1979 performance of See See Rider on magusmagic2. Time signature on that one is :39.
This would appear to be phase three--this man, Eric Burdon, apparently surfed the wave through some of the major phases in US history, muscially and otherwise. Starting out with the British group, The Animals, with their newly grown-out hair and neat matching suits just a few years esarlier, he's all-out cool here with a new set of band-members. It looks as though he's gone through a consciousness awakening right at the height of the war.
according to legend, E.B. and War were the hardest partying band of their time....one tale suggests the break-up occurred over a fight involving E.B., several members of War, a hot blonde chick named Ella, a case of mescal, and fifty dollars. Hope that helped.
@MrJohnmacek , Hi, google Songfacts, there is an interview by the drummer of WAR, Harold Brown. Very informative from a man who has jammed with some of musics greatest artists, besides himself, I might add. Peace.
My Fav rock' roll singer, in the top of Daltrey, Jagger, Gillan, Bolan, Mercury, Ferry, Morrison (Jim and Van), Cocker, Rodgers, Marriot, Charles, Fogerty...
