This is just wonderful, as usual, CandH001. Is it only me or there is no band in the whole world that plays "Carry On" better than the Coldstream Guards Band. Maybe I'm prejudiced but I can't imagine it better played during a parade. Thank you for the upload.
@BaildonLad - It's called 'Crags of Tumbledown'. The pipe tune was written during the Falklands War in 1982 by a Scots Guards Piper in his shell-scrape. He was up Tumbledown mountain shortly after it's capture and wrote the tune on the back of a ration pack before the task force went onto relieve Port Stanley.
@veltroo The Band of the Grenadier Guards are first out from Wellington Barracks with the streetliners. The Band of the Welsh Guards follow the Band And Pipes And Drums of the Scots Guards.
Think, if you abolished the monarchy you'd save millions and millions and get rid of a stoic old german. Not only that, you wouldn't have to look at Charlie's dog Camilla anymore either!
Ummm...actually, the Queen brings in over £200million a year from tourism and other sources for the country, so we would actually be worse of without her. Besides...Im happy to pay 64p a year to have the Monarchy.
You are one of the vocal FEW...who want to get rid of them...and you will forever remain the few.
I love the arrangement of Crags of Tumbledown at 3:26 played by the Scots Guards. The Original is by Pipe Major Jimmy Riddle SG but I think this arrangement is by Lt Col David Price, former Director of Music of the Scots Guards and Senior Director of Music of The Household Division.
@MrJST87 pipe major RIDDELL was present with the 2nd bn scots guards at the battle of tumbledown mountain and wrote this tune that night on the back of a ration pack.....marty
I am an American-Canadian and an avid history scholar. Wonderful ceremonies such as the Trooping of the Colour should never fall by the wayside, but should be forever celebrated. The tradition and the pomp is second to none.
I was lucky enough to witness this in London and have wanted to return ever since.
@ApproachWithCaution Most of those who advocate the abolition of the monarchy do so out of avarice and jealousy. If the monarchy were abolished we would need a new head of state, which would undoubtedly be a president. A president would cost as much, if not more than a monarch, and how many tourists would flock to see the president, or the presidents residence? The monarchy and the pomp and ceremony is our heritage, and one of our greatest assets.
@Sarge084 of course i agree with you. But if such a terrible day were to happen, why couldn't we just make the Prime Minister the head of state? It's not like the monarchy has any real power these days anyway.
@ApproachWithCaution There needs to be a system in place to stop abuse of power, look at Robert Mugabe! In most civilised nations there is a two tier system, and the majority of commonwealth countries have PM and president.
The Queen does have powers, but can't really use them. She signs all new laws before enactment, she dissolves government, she has quite a big involvement. Tony Blair came to admire her even though he was, and is a federalist.
A PM can't be Head Of State because no government wants to call a new election and risk getting kicked out. You have to have a HOS, seperate to Parliament, that is responsible for calling elections, opening Parliament and dissolving Parliament. If it wasn't the Monarch it would be a politically biased president. And the most important thing for the Head Of State is to be politically UNbiased. So a Monarch is a million times better.
@ApproachWithCaution In the current situation I really can't see any way we could abolish the monarchy.
As many of you may know, Queen is head of many other countries, she's head of the commonwealth, and we are the United Kingdom. To abolish the monarchy so much would have to change. :)
hey just think - in 50 years time in Chelsea hospital all the pensioners will be talking about the afghan war and how devilish those rag 'eds were! Just the old boys do nw about the germans lol.
Excellent video. Well done. Good variety showing the Guards Regiments to advantage. They all looked great and it was good to see the Scots Guards pipers.
The Senior Drum Major is always with the first band from Wellington Barracks on the Queen's Birthday Parade (on this occasion The Grenadier Guards Band). Once on Horse Guards Parade he is of course the centre Drum Major and The Grenadier Guards Band form up on the right of the Massed Bands.

I wonder what it would be like if you put tap dancing shoes on them and then made them march = )
chelzeydarling 11 months ago
@chelzeydarling
Well technically they're all wearing tap shoes already.
Their 'ammo' boots have a horse shoe in the heel, hobnails throughout the sole and a metal toe-plate.
It increases the durability of the boots and also makes the lovely crunching sound as they march possible.

@emptyangel I guess i can hear the tap to their shoes now that you mention that. How interesting

Never mind, found out myself. You can see the Irish Guards at the rear there.
Also, the Band of the Welsh Guards lead the Grenadier Guards.

Yer I guess that's something to do with the senior drum major needing to get on parade with his band first
