There is something special about Fischers interpretation. I'm not a musician, so I can't really say what it is, I just know I like it very much, and I've heard many versions and interpretations of this piece.
I disagree that it became unfashionable to play this music on the piano. The Scwann catalogue is literally bursting with recordings on the piano of of works from this period made throughout the 20th cent. Rosalyn Turek was arguably the first to present an "authentic" & scholarly performance of Bach, et al., and most of her recordings are on the piano. I have a great disk made in the '60's of de la Rocha playing all these suites . Angela Hewitt is merely following a long-standing trend.
The two performances I've heard before this one were by Annie Fischer (whom I revere!) and Murray Perahia. This one by Edwin Fischer is amazing, too. Some have also praised the version by Fou Ts'ong. Any suggestions for further listening here, people?! Thanks so much for this post,
Way back when (1938) , pianists had a limited amount of time to record their performances on 78 RPM records. Therefore, they did not take the repeats. Thank you for your comments.

Why would it ever even matter if it's fashionable or not... are pianists acting like high school kids?

No it's not. All Piano-versons are just plain boring compaired to it. Fully 13 minutes overdose!

I listened to this magnificent performance of E. Fischer on the radio, more than 20 years ago and I discouraged to hear it again.
