Thanks to whoever put this up: I made a cover this morning, and not a very good one, but if you're into covers by amateur musicians of songs you like, check out

I have probably listened to this song 100 times or more in a 5 day period at one time in my life. Love everything about it, as well as (Time) The Revelator. What a great talent and artist, can't wait to see her my absolute fave Neil at the Buffallo Springfield show up in S.B. :)

@pasaywuh It is "Garden Mall". That is (was?) the name of the shopping center - The Santa Cruz Garden Mall. And she mentions farming in the pogonip. That is the name of a park in Santa Cruz.
oldtimesound, Gillian Welch did write this song. The song written by Neil Young and covered by Emmylou Harris on her eponymous mid-nineties CD has the same title but is a completely different song both lyrically and musically. Listen to both again and compare them!
From what little I know of G.W.'s life, elements of this song are pretty much autobiographical. She was a "little deadhead," and she did play bass in a band for awhile. I have no idea if other verses allude to actual events or people in her life though, such as the "love-sick daughter in the San Joaquin."
You are right...I think this is the best of all of her songs... it is the most intensely real and personal... every other song of hers is a story... this one is her story. The colors she'd never seen came from the Love Sick Daughter .... probably an acronym if you think about it.
Actually I thought it said dead head. BUt red head would make more sense. Either one really. I going to listen really really closely. But she does make references to being a rolling stone so poetically dead head fits to.
there are a shitload of 'wrecking ball" songs--Gillian wrote this one

This so reminds me of The Waterboys song, Bang on the Ear. This and Nobody knows my name are my favourite songs from Soul Journey.

Everytime you download a song from mediaoutletonline a kitten will be put to death. Please don't download from them if you love kittens.

I was so happy to hear Gillian say she was a deadhead the first time I heard this song.
by the way, does she say "the weed that I recall" or "Oh wee did I recall", it sounds like weed to me, but someone told me it wasn't
