Obviously Life Goes On, Come as You Are and Eighties sound similar but they're not identical. My favourite band of the 3 are The Damned but I think their song is the worst
You guys are all on crack! Killing Joke was around before Cobain left his diapers. Pure geniuses. 80's rocked! I'll give a LITTLE hype to Nirvana by taking from here and there and creating their own style but that came in '90. Killing Joke...CBGB's... NY.....teenager. Rocked!

And to be honest, wow this song sucks. KJ should be HAPPY, that NIrvana ripped them off and got publicity, because that's the only way these guys would also become popular haha..
@interpretop I say my old fruit: Killing Joke were a lot more popular than you realise. Fuck Cobain & his motley crew. We from the early eighties care less about Cobain and his shit bravado. Pity you. Ha ha..... Want some more sauce on that? Tosser.
What does it truly matter where a guitar lick or drum beat is borrowed or not?
Musicians borrow from each other from the second they pick up their first instrument. You have to have influences in order to invent art. Art isn't created in a vacuum!
Killing Joke is a very underrated and talented band. I just wish they had tasted the success they deserved. They broke a lot of new ground.
@UserUK201 which Damned track are you actually talking about. I know Geordie pretty well and have asked him about this riff, and he was very upfront with his answer. You tell me which Damned track, then I'll tell you where he really nicked it from.
@URturn2njoy , the HMV picturehouse in Edinburgh, it was brilliant ! the support were shit though and i have no idea who they were cos none of us could read the sign they had up, lol, but KJ were amazing , they played Love Like Blood second and from then on it was brilliant would see them again in a second ;)
@ScotteDio First off, grunge was 20 years ago, and it was trendy for about 5 minutes before Gangsta Rap took control of the world. Secondly, Dokken is from Los Angeles.
Thirdly, your profile says you're a fan of 1980s New Wave and Punk... seriously, you need to do a little research, man. You apparently live in some strange world where a Cure fan would look down on a Nirvana fan for being too trendy. This does not compute... but I suspect a great number of things within your worldview don't.
Not to defend Cobain, but Life Goes On was released first, and Eighties is infinitely closer sounding to Life Goes On than Come As You Are sounds like Eighties.
I guess where I'm going is: you would have to be pretty shameless to accuse someone of plagiarism if the affected song is already a rip off of another song.
Gran grupo igualmente.

@4570046 Many music fans dont measure quality by success. I could care less if everyone likes nirvana's whiney shit. Killing joke was always cutting edge, nirvana is merely flavor of the moment for 90s kids. Like Ninja Turtles they are just attached.
I love how this song is a big slap in the face to those that claim the 80s was just party-party-party!
yeah, maybe "par-tay" with the palm trees for one mid-summer and all the big hair & pop bands, but overall the 1980s was much more grim & dire. This song proves it. Killing Joke ROCK!
Aimee Goodling -- here's the funny thing -- I don't even know if you like this song-- haha, BUT it makes me think o you cuz we were in smart kid classes together -- ones we didn't even have to take, and you were "eighties perfect" to me -- not a puffball of preppy cute and not as overly wrought defining yourself against them as I was. You just seemed comfy in your beautiful skin, just cynical enough to not be mean and super smart. You were just one of those ppl I was happy to know back then.
Cobain didn't realise the riffs sounded alike until after the song was recorded. It wasn't plagiarism, and it wasn't intentional. You want to see actual plagiarism? Listen to Suicidal Tendencies "I Saw Your Mommy", then Puddle Of Mudd "She Hates Me"
@aurlis2012: The song is called "80's". The lyrics clearly state: "I'm living in the 80's." "Come As You Are" was released in '91. Obviously you weren't paying attention... not just to the song, but the look, style & even the TITLE of the video... Even the copyright was dated 1984. My God... half the politicians featured are either died during that decade like Egyptian president Anwar Sadat & The Ayatollah Khomeini from Iran. Please get your facts straight before you comment.
This was the type of sound fromToronto's industrial music scene in the mid-80's if you opted for something other than New Order's Blue Monday not to mention Diamond Dave & the VH Bros'. George Owellian release that year. Always thought England's Killing Joke would be the next big thing then Jesus & mary Chain came along and that pretty much influenced the Boston, Minneapolis and Seattle alt-crowd and we got Pixies, Soul Asylum, Soundgarten as a result
As far as the pixies issue goes, cobain did give them full credit and once said something to the effect that nirvana wasn't doing anything new. they were just copying the pixies. it happens. at least he had the humility to admit it. keep in mind that stylistically the pixies owe a lot to sonic youth. it goes on and on.
I'll give Nirvana their due but they were definitely overrated. Even Dave Grohl has said so. Nevermind was basically a collection of other peoples songs re-written by Kurt Cobain. At least half of that album sounds like a carbon copy of the Pixies.
@iamyourgranddaddy I doubt very much Dave Grohl would EVER say Nirvana were overrated!! I love both bands because they were so fucking special in their time!! They both keep reminding me of special moments in my life as I grew up.
i guess it is repetitive, and yet, cause its fucking killing joke im ok with it. its still better than anything from...1994-now-anything in the future. not really sure what all this nirvana shit is about, never struck me as particularly unique or interesting, its not its fault though, its a product of the 90's
@therunningman09 Nirvana are the most overrated rock band ever, thanks to MTV, a mainstream album like Nevermind and Cobain's death. Killing Joke are very versatile, their style has punk, new wave, gothic, heavy metal and synth pop elements. Nirvana are a good band but their popularity is exaggerated in my opinion.
@ter50 i think people like nirvana becuz no one had heard music like that before. Punk element with pop melodies and great lyrics...but this song is sick
Okay two things wrong with ur post 1) Thousands of singers and bands aired on mtv when it was good, but not all of them got famous 2) Cobain's death wasn't a stunt, He was going through hell and he wanted to end it.
These guys I've listened to their music but in my opinion theyre as average as any 80s pop band, if not less. Nirvana was more creative than them.
And the KJ copied this song from another band, so that makes them even less significant.
@therunningman09 Killing Joke isn't any pop band, this song's idea is to be a parody of the "Eighties". God, read a bit before making any stupid comments
@therunningman09 Killing Joke has influenced an inmense number of bands (Nirvana, too!!), its genre boundaries are quite wide (though in essence they are a punk band), so stop playing them down.
@hatebreed444 Based off it I suppose? The song structure is way different though and it's easy to tell that Nirvana wasn't going for a direct and blatant rip. Also there are so many riffs and solos based off eachother or similar in way or another it's not even funny,
Ah, to see them all in their prime: beautiful, powerful, talented, political, humorous…a great classic video and supreme testament to Killing Joke’s unique musical genius!
Now..if you could make 80's into 2010's (I know..doesn't scan) .and that was a Nazi flag in the background..this would be a great satire of a typical tea bagger or hardcore republican rally.
Damn I love this song!..but I'd never seen the video before.
this has been edited- when the guitar player wearing the priest collar turns you used to be able to see he had skin falling off and whip marks. too offensive i guess. lame.
Hmmm - I'd heard that Cobain referred to the song as "the Killing Joke Song"... in truth the riff was the Damned's before it was anyone else's... Cobain was humble enough to admit it, Coleman and co. are anything but humble and the Damned are too cool to sue anyone... a lot of "cross fertilisation" went on in the UK punk scene so who knows? Personally, I like all 3 songs, took a while to understand how good a song Come As You are is, what did it for me was the Jim Brown (as Elvis) version.
If you knew what kind of dross music that was being played during the 1980s, you'd know that what Killing Joke was playing was radically different and incredibly inspiring! NO ONE sounded like them; and they continue to lead where others follow.
why the hell are we going back to this bullshit taht went on when this video came out.we don't need retro of that era redifining are nation in such a corprate and fashion sense, the problem with our economy now is for-real.i live in texas and fuck rick perry for not taking the package from our president here.think of poor mexican people who wanna work butt can't feed their kids, sorry g.m. lockhead and panam airlines... fuck circa 84-85.go to hell republicans....
Based on the simplicity of the riff, I'll give Cobain the benefit of the doubt that he wrote it without realizing someone else had written something strikingly similar.
That said, this song is way cooler than "come as you are," anyway.
@SamuelHellDay Obviously, every band gets inspiration from other popular resources from their time that made them great.
But I really don't think he sat down one day, and said, "I'm gonna make a song called Come As You Are....AND PLAGIARIZE IT!!!" I think it happened unintentionally.
Obviously Life Goes On, Come as You Are and Eighties sound similar but they're not identical. My favourite band of the 3 are The Damned but I think their song is the worst

@coltsuperocean10
Grohl did say Nirvana were overrated. He was pissed off at how bands like Pixies were ignored at the time while Nirvana got all the recognition.
iamyourgranddaddy 1 year ago
i guess it is repetitive, and yet, cause its fucking killing joke im ok with it. its still better than anything from...1994-now-anything in the future. not really sure what all this nirvana shit is about, never struck me as particularly unique or interesting, its not its fault though, its a product of the 90's

Nirvana is way better than this queer shit, and all you pussy Nirvana haters can shut the fuck up because no one cares about what you like.
dumb fucks.

@therunningman09 Nirvana are the most overrated rock band ever, thanks to MTV, a mainstream album like Nevermind and Cobain's death. Killing Joke are very versatile, their style has punk, new wave, gothic, heavy metal and synth pop elements. Nirvana are a good band but their popularity is exaggerated in my opinion.
ter50 1 year ago 2
@ter50 i think people like nirvana becuz no one had heard music like that before. Punk element with pop melodies and great lyrics...but this song is sick
Beckett125 1 year ago
@ter50
And the KJ copied this song from another band, so that makes them even less significant.
therunningman09 1 year ago
@therunningman09 Killing Joke isn't any pop band, this song's idea is to be a parody of the "Eighties". God, read a bit before making any stupid comments
JL897139 1 year ago
@therunningman09 Killing Joke has influenced an inmense number of bands (Nirvana, too!!), its genre boundaries are quite wide (though in essence they are a punk band), so stop playing them down.

did nirvana steal that riff?
hatebreed444 1 year ago

Geordie Walker(guitar) reminds me of Conan O' Brien in a weird way..if he was shorter and totally different.

Forgot to add... the third song I'm referring to is "Come as you are" by the Damned
nothingnewsince82 1 year ago
Hmmm - I'd heard that Cobain referred to the song as "the Killing Joke Song"... in truth the riff was the Damned's before it was anyone else's... Cobain was humble enough to admit it, Coleman and co. are anything but humble and the Damned are too cool to sue anyone... a lot of "cross fertilisation" went on in the UK punk scene so who knows? Personally, I like all 3 songs, took a while to understand how good a song Come As You are is, what did it for me was the Jim Brown (as Elvis) version.

um was way before nirvana. lol

If you knew what kind of dross music that was being played during the 1980s, you'd know that what Killing Joke was playing was radically different and incredibly inspiring! NO ONE sounded like them; and they continue to lead where others follow.
