  • He seen all the people as brothers, shook the hand of everyone, even he was jew, slav, arian,or whatever bullshit someone invented to feel special. And some say: "He was a COMMUNIST !"

    I say:OVERREACTING!

My country fought with the wehrmacht and then was incorporated in the Soviet Block.Politics will never be perfect,MUSIC and LOVE is.But the yanks were so indoctrinated that God blessed America, that they can barely afford to open their hearts.Paul doesn't belong to USA but to all Mankind.

  • Just found a hour ago about this titan of freedom. I somehow got hooked by this man's history. I wonder how hypocrits most of the americans were and still are. They went to "save" the world from Hitler, managed it but in the 60's there were still lynching black people in the south. Ignorance is sometimes more damaging than hatred. this black guy gave an example to us all, remaining strong as his voice at all the prejudice,he stood by the rights of all the people, educated himself, spoke 20 languages

  • This song defines the true meaning of dignity.

  • Fantastico!

  • It is one of the greatest hymns ever and it was written by a seaman who had once been involved in the slave trade. Paul Robeson would have known. His recording is probably the best ever - it is certainly my favourite...

  • oh my, so this is that thing i heard about. think they called it singing

  • gives me chills

  • Hi voice is an Amazing Grace from God, in and by itself!

  • voice of god

  • what album is this version from?

  • ...Quando hai la grazia, o ricevere il dono di una voce come quella di Paul ,capisci perchè...sopra di noi c'è qualcosa di molto ...molto grande...affascinante..che trascende ...tutti i pensieri umani...

  • this sounds like older rodeson.... so deep

  • @luxordiasgard No its not, it was written by a Man and sung by a Man, and should be women can sing it to but thats the most ignorant tthing to say.

  • My Dad is 87 years old and bought all these Paul Robeson records when they were newly pressed on LPs...when it was dangerous to buy them. There are no words for what this song makes me feel in regards to life and death and my Dads age and the fact he had a chance to see Paul Robeson live and missed it because he was scared. I cant take the thought. Someone out there gotta know what I mean. Live every goddamned day like you mean it, you dont know when you will miss your last opportunity.

  • 1 person doesn't have dignity or grace.

  • An Epic Artist! Who sang this Epic Hymn with a soul touching voice!

  • Amazing voice,amazing talent,amazing blackman

  • God, sounds like a T-rex projecting through a cannon

  • They played an instrumental version of this song in my grandmother's funeral, and I came to think of this version for some odd reason. He portrays the emotion in it so perfectly!

  • Let us hear auto tune make someone sound like this.

  • Is it wrong that I wish they would have had his voice singing this as Scotty played the bagpipes at Spock's funeral in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan? ;)

After all, if ever there were a star among stars, a voice so rich and deep and full of truth and power that it seemed to rain down from space and the heavens themselves...

  • this is the second best version i have ever heard, the best vocals. the best is when it is played on bagpipes. that is just my opinion.

  • Written by captain john newton a captain of a slave ship.

  • @billy2rivers1 yes a viscous slaver--whose conversion to humanity took years--but he did become a human--his 1788 narrative was important in ending the trade so despite his enormities I think he redeems himself in the end.

  • One of the most intelligent individuals in American history. its a shame more people dont try to emualte this man.

  • @Springywater to emulate Paul Robeson would be a difficult thing to do even for the best but there are others

Bob Moses Fannie Lou Hamer Ned Cobb Mack Coad--people whose names are not well known.

  • Some argue that Robeson, despite contrary evidence, was a a bass-baritone or even a baritone, rather than a true bass. Granted, his young voice on his first records had a baritonal timbre. But PR never had a true baritone's range (roughly from G below middle C to G two octaves higher); and always had more richness than virtually any baritone in the low register. Even in his first recordings, Robeson "sits" very comfortably upon low notes that most baritones wouldn't attempt --

  • Amazing voice! Thank you!!!!!!

  • Wonderful....................

  • Made me cry...

  • What a wonderful voice !

  • What a voice !!

  • @welshbean3 you should read his bio....he was a remarkable man for his time...

  • SUPERBE!

  • Thanks for posting this! I have several Paul Robeson cd's, but he doesn't sing Amazing Grace on any of them - not even the Smithsonian Great Voices of the Century. Magnificent! Many thanks! One of my very favorite songs so splendidly sung by the incomparable Paul Robeson!

  • Thanks ,Paul Robeson

    This is Real Art--- gorgeous

  • you cyber leftists are a disgrace! you will not listen to Mrs Hamer! why? because she was just a sharecropper! not a celebrity! The hell with you!

  • Well, that's part of it. Most people don't know about her at all. I didn't learn about her until I went to college and saw Eyes on the Prize.

  • everyone knows the story of this song--how the slaver John Newton who wrote the song over a period of time became an abolitionist--most people think it was sudden but it took time--nevertheless he repented his great sins--and if Paul can forgive him so can I

  • @vivascargill I did not know the story of this song, and reading that summary while listening to this version gave a burst of intensity to my already flowing tears.

  • I've loved Paul Robeson's voice for many years, loved it long before he died. Some of the lowest notes still cause shivers up and down my spine. An incomparable singer and an amazing human being.

  • What a voice!

  • One of the most amazing and wonderful men ever to grace this planet. You have to be a fascist deep down not to feel the goodness and honesty of this man as he sings.

  • One People One Voice One Love

  • A most wonderful voice that makes me sing and feel good to be alive.

    Ron. H

  • I love this music and the singer. What a deep and full voice.

  • "As an artist I have no choice. I must stand for the forces of truth against bigotry and intolerance."

  • @yogisuperman And as an American I have no choice. I too must stand for the forces of truth and justice against bigotry and intolerance.

  • alas il comment-dit on "governs"? comme un blanc! et je ne pense pas que Frere Robeson serait content (I don't think Comrade Robeson would be pleased--now) mais il faut defender Obama contra les racists--quesque to pense?
