Thank you for this incredible vid. It seems no one else has a clue what to do with a Memorymoog. I want one so bad, or one of those other vintage analogs being named here. I do have an Arturia Origin, as well as a Virus C and Radias, so I'm not exactly doing without. But those Moogs and Obies have that wonderful control panel you can play with endlessly, for infinite sound variations. LONG LIVE ANALOG!
Memorymoog is the Memorymoog. I wish they reissued it as Memorymoog Voyager or something. The Voyager XL is nice, but still monophonic. We want the Memorymoog!
Not sure why people say this is like having 3 minimoogs..... it sounds nothing like a minimoog. These are CEM based the same as the obxa - ob8 - later prophet 5 - mini is a much smoother sound. Thet are both good but very different
@DJPeteJames, I've owned all the non-SEM Obi's over the years... The OB-X sounds very different to the later 8 notes... there's really not that much in the sound between the Xa and the 8 (more modulation facilities in the OB8), so If I had the choice I would look out for an 8 voice OB-X.
I tended to like the sound of the memorymoog and Jupiter 8 over the sound of the OB-8 and Matrix 12 that I owned at the time... the MM is more varied then the OBis in what it can create.
@DJPeteJames, The MM can be very warm but I get your point, The OBX/8 has a more syrupy, smooth sound. Th memorymoog however, has a much rawer sound... biting, hard edged sound - it's great for power chords and chiffy lead sounds. Because of this it does sound different to a Model D, which again is more creamy.
You know... Moog would have sold a whole lot more of these if you had played this demo back in 1983. Maybe the DX7 wouldn't have become such a big deal.
@nocturn07, thanks for your comments... I'm not that great a player and wasn't trying too hard here... this synth does make you play in a certain way, it has that big 80's Rock sound to it.
Nice job. good to hear the original factory presets again. Patch21 Strings has always been a favorite of mine. Other synts can get close.... but none as nice :).
This is amazing.. the sound of this thing.. I know there are other poly analog synths out there, but nothing sounds like these to me... such a unique sound. I heard from a lil birdy that another poly moog is in the workshops.... something I might just be saving my chips for.
I just got my MM+ for a couple of weeks now, and i'm still knocked down by the endless creativity in sounds you can make with it,, like going in audiorate with pusle width modulation! gives me tears in my eyes, ;) (happy tears), and it's a very stable synth, makes a lot of noise due to it's cooler, but better a cool synth then a burning one... Preset 1 reminds me of the old aphex twin .... i'll try making a nice video myself soon... cheerss.. EJ
Sorry, the Chroma was sold before I got a chance to do a video demo... I did however manage to sample 400 patches from it so I'm working them up in logic EXS24 now. The Chroma is an awesome synth, my favourite analogue... and, over the years I have owned pretty much all the great polysynths from that era.
I purchased my MM 15 years ago for $500.00 US!!!! Yes, it's a pain in the ass (keeping the oscillators tuned, blah, blah), but I find, if I let it warm up for a good 30 minutes, it responds nicely. It IS the FATEST synth in my arsenal (which makes up about 20 synths...old and mainly new). Funny thing is, the voices in this video don't match mine...think I'll go down and fart around...especially like the very first preset (0)....thanks for the great video!!
I still have mine. It's a MM+. I never had any major problems with it. I had it completely cleaned and services some years back. I used it in a YES trib band I had. I can't say enough for this warm, fat wonderful machine. But the truth of the matter is that I might part with it soon. I might trade it to a friend of mine for his Receptor (fully packed), because of my needs at the moment. I really don't use the MM because I just can't bring myself to gig with her anymore. She belongs in a studio.
The MM is one of those synths that has both tremendous grunt and very delicate tones, it can sound totally analogue with lush pads and strings and also very digital with clangourous bell tones... but it need to be programmed well... otherwise it can sound a mess.
I can't believe I had one of these and got rid of it...damn the 'need' for new multi-timbral machines! At least I made a SLIGHT profit on the sale, but it still wasn' t worth it in hindsight.
Well, Bob Moog wouldn't have been likely to reissue it, since he had nothing to do with designing it. He sold the company back in the mid 70's, so it was unlikely he would have had anything to do with that particular instrument. Whether or not that would stop Moog Music from reissuing it now, I dunno.
No, that's a patch I programmed myself... I tried to closely match the lead from my model D and that's what I came up with. The memorymoog actually makes a very powerful monosynth... although it's a touch overkill!
imho the memorymoog was one of the best sounding analog synths ever made. reliability always let it down unfortunately, and the last one i used conveniently combusted internally in the studio whilst recording. I hope moog remake this a la voyager for the 21st century...and make it multitimbral.
Emigrating to the States so many of these synths would need their power supplies converted. Balancing the cost of shipping them and selling them... as I'm sure I'll be able to re-buy all these synths much cheaper when I'm in NYC (If I wanted to) and frankly I need the money to move. A few of those patches were my own but I like the idea of people new to the unit hearing the factory patches. Moving to a smaller studio so going computer based but will hold on to a few vintage synths (say 4 or 5).
Definitely if you're gaining money from the converting from euros or pounds to the dollar. I need to post one sometime of just improvising and going crazy with twisting knobs. Thanks again for posting a good Memorymoog video and good luck in here in the states.
Very nice video. Excellent playing. I saw your Source video as well and have to ask why you are selling all your analog synths? Also curious why your last time playing the MM you only played presets. I have a Memorymoog as well and have thought of parting with it but haven't been able to go through with it. Any chance of another demo or is it already sold? JD73 I'm still waiting for the Memorymoog video you promised.

Hi Friend, sincerely congratulations for the beautiful instrumentation, beautiful and splendid synthesizers demo well done.
I now consider purchasing memorymoog, but before buy I try it sounds library.
At the end, I ask kindly if you help find audio files with programs for memorymoog, for use with cassette interface.
Thank you again for your willingness and competence.
best regards
