his cousin is Dale Hawkins (Susie Q) we sadly lost Dale in February 2010. this was a big hit here in Bflo NY he was raised in Toronto which is not far at all from here.
I Remember the Ole Magnolia-Inn and Cajuns Warf in Little Rock Ronnie and the Bus ride's and Robin your son and Wayne, and the rest of the guys. I enjoyed the times and will always think of them. thanks Jeffery Bogan
would love to know who sang the original version of this song....it was not ronnie hawkins.....would appreciate hearing from anyone...believe me, the original song was the best!!
@tweedlededee Ronnie's is from 1959, Young Jessie an African American R&B singer,he is mostly known for his solo career, work with The Flairs and a brief stint in The Coasters. "Mary Lou" / "Don't Think I Will" (Modern #961) (June 1955) Young Jessie is best known as the writer of his original "Mary Lou," later covered by Ronnie Hawkins in 1959. Young Jessie's brother is DeWayne Jessie (a/k/a "Otis Washington" and "Otis Day & the Knights") Nat Lampoons Animal house.
@JRussoBuffaloNY - wow, guess we both go back a bit! of course, you are right on the money! ronnie did a great job covering the song, but we'll take the original first. i remember when that song first came out......it was great then, and has stood the test of time. thanks for the info......
@JRussoBuffaloNY - can't find young jessie's version on youtube.....first time ever that i couldn't find music that i was looking for......anyway,JRusso, enjoy......
Was doing okay until the jazzy "Bleedin' Gums Murphy" sax solo. Pity, 'cos I love the original and all the rest, especially Southern Love. Oh, and Ramblin' Man, Summertime, Sometimes I Feel Like.... you know them.
Don't know how many remember or even know,but this song was used heavily in a b-movie horror flick called,"Hello Mary Lou:Prom Night 2" that came out back in 1987.
my uncle was from arkansas and went to high school with ronnie hawkins and he saw him in 1968 at massey hall and he has said many times he is the best concert he has ever seen.
1-10-2012. Happy 77th Birthday, Ronnie.
