The old mono versions of songs almost always sound better than the later stereo mixes. I don't think they really knew what to do with stereo at the beginning, and you ended up with weird stuff like the stereo version of 'The Piper at the Gates of Dawn' by Pink Floyd. It took them a good few years before they got their act together with the stereo stuff.
