This is a great song. It reminds me of my grandpa (Papa). He was my grandpa, a second dad, and my best friend. He loved his family with all his heart and gave everything he had to them. He was the foundation of our family. His ability to forgive and love his family unconditionally was amazing. He always put others ahead of himself. He didn't listen to a lot of music but his life was definitely a perfect symphony. I love you and miss you my Papa, my leader, and my best friend. -Jared
I was a charter member of the School Band of America in 1961 -- Mr. Harn has always been one of my heroes. What a wonderful man. That European tour was one of the highlights of my entire life and gave me memories to share with my children and grandchildren. In addition to the fine direction of Mr. Harn, we had some awesome talent in Steve Gadd on drums, Henry and his bass Thelma, and Dick Jennings on alto sax. How wonderful that so many people shared in the greatness of Mr. Harn.
We hold dan in high regard and high estem. May he rest in peace. his music was second to none . Dan was great in a era filled with greatness. All praise is due the leader of the band! Thanks for posting this great song!
My experience with the SBA 1966 tour was surely among the highlights of my life. What close relationships we formed in those short weeks. To a person, it was a wonderful group. I will always be grateful to Mr. Harn.
I couldn't finish on the last post so here goes. I just wanted to thank you for this video. It is so important we dont forget those who have so profoundly affectd our lives. I can see the respect and love you have for this man. Funny, I was just looking for some Fogelberg and found this. I have never posted a comment before but felt compelled to do so about this. Thanks for sharing. God Bless!
I think of my father who was not musically inclined at all but was such a blessing to his children. My dad worked 2 jobs until we got older. Then he spent time playing football, frisbee and just about anything else with his two boys. I went on to play college football but anytime I think about football I think about my day and I taking turns kicking field goals over the electrical wires in our front yard. What a leader is was and still is. Thanks for the video.
I've watched this beautiful, inspiring video many times; each time it's reminded me of the wonderful experience I had with the SBA-SCA in the 60s (probably 1967).
I particularly remember Mr. Harn—a distinguished and accomplished musician and a kind person. I was in touch with him a few years ago.
I'm not in touch with any one who participated in the SBA-SCA tour when I did, but I still reminisce about the experience: it was life-changing.
I toured Europe with SBA in 1962 (flute). It still remains as the most memorable thing I ever did. Mr. Harn was quite admirable and commanded a lot of respect. There is no way to express the thrill of the concerts we gave, the musicians in the band, the people I met, the sights we saw. How do you ever say thank you enough to our director?! Thank you so much for sharing this video. I will never forget Mr. Ed Harn and the School Band of America. This song is perfect.
this is a amazing tribute to a much beloved man who influnced many people. I can see how much his children loved and respected him and what he gave in his life to them and to others. this video is so very moving and brought me to tears! It made me miss my parents who have both passed over so much, it like love reaching across time and space to say love exists across time. BELIEVE thanks so much for posting
to lakb45-I was a member of SBA/SCA in 1966 (clarinet), and 1970-musician and chaperone. I believe you were on the '66 tour with your young son. Mr. H loved both of you so! I remember how he lit up when Tony came to rehearsals in Strasbourg. Your last comment on his health, etc was 2 years ago. Is he still with us? And where? I would also love to contact Clark and Mary Waldmier. Do you have any info on them? They, with your dad, made a huge impact on my life. What a treat to find this tribute!
I often sing this song for My father. He was the greatest man I ever knew and gave me some of the best gift a father could pass onto a son. I miss and love you dad and always will. You were taken from us to soon.
i never even know how to fret the chords but he bought me my first electric guitar, which i cant afford, a man of few words but when he speak, he speak with content, alas, i never had a chance to show him what i've learned even thought im not a pro
my granpa is a guitarist and a leader of his fellow old bandmates, and he was a well principled cabinet maker and a carpenter, my grandpa past away after telling him via phone that i passed the the state board exam, he died out of cancer, i never had a chance to play the quitar with him, because the last time i saw him is when i was on 14 now im 24 since he died overseas, the song really fits
To Dan: thank you for leaving us with one of the most underrated, beautiful songs ever recorded. Your music will live on. RIP.
To lakb45: thank you for your touching tribute to your father and for bringing all of us together.

Brought Chills to 27 United States Marines Standing here watching this in Iraq. We wish you well, and one of us lives in Kannapolis, North Carolina, when we saw Hendersonville on the video. We will listen to this song on Christmas, depending on the combat. It's still pretty bad stuff here, though the news doesn't cover it. We lose one good man about every 4 to 5 days. God bless you during this joyous holiday. Hug your family for us. May the good Lord watch over all of you. & may we get home..
What a wonderful tribute! I'm sorry to say I don't know who this man is. From what I've read in some of the comments and saw in the pictures, he touched many peoples' lives. We need more people like that in this world!
To all the band leaders and teachers thru the years who have inspired me, my daughters and everyone else who has a love for music, I honor you and say "Thanks!". To this day, i still find time to sit and play my french horn, although not as good as I use to be, I still very much enjoy it.
And for this video tribute, I say, very well done!
This song is a tribute to you Grandad. You passed away today, going home with Jesus. I will miss you very much. I will meet you heaven someday. I Love You Grandad.
I was a member of the SBA on the Expo '67 tour, as well as the European summer '68 trip, and remember Mr. Harn well: a gentleman and true musician.
I lost track of many of the participants over the years, but -- by pure accident -- located Rosalie Duckworth's grave a few years ago. She was a chaperone, and beloved (though put-upon) all-around good sport on the aforementioned '68 tour.
I am so gratified when SBA members find this posting. Thank you for your kind words about my dad. SBA was surely his gift to the world--made possible by all you wonderful musicians who participated. Again, thanks.
@lakb45 We were friends with your Dad and Judith in Tampa, Fl as well as keeping in touch with them when they lived in NC, NY, etc. Lost touch after New Mexico and wondered when our Christmas Card came back. When did he die and how/? Where is Judith now? Would like more information. thanks for this tribute. We really enjoyed it and it brought back memories for us.
@lakb45 You did a wonderful job with this video. The message of your love, and respect for your father was very poignant. It reminds me of my father may he rip.
@gkhmbln Al those kind memories have the value of gold. What passes before and will never pass again is to be treasured and kept close to one's heart. What joy there is in what has past is forever a gift to the future
i never had the experience of growing up with my father because he passed away too early when i was only 5. he left five kids in care of mom. to listen to this song and its lyrics makes you just sit and stare at nothing and start to shed tears in the eye. very powerful song. thank you for uploading.
I don't have memories of my father who left home when I was 2 years old. My strength in life came from my mother. She was a very strong woman with ambition, courage, and a strong will... very uncommon in the mid to late 50's. This song, although dedicated to fathers, brings very strong emotions in me about my mother who assumed both roles. I have been very successful in life due to her wisdom and direction and have 2 sons who will be brought up with her strengths, through me... her legacy.
LAKB45 - I'm sure your father was very proud of you as you are of him. This is a great dedication which seems to elicit strong emotions from a lot of viewers. Thanks for posting!
My dad left my mom and I when I was 4. My mother, too, played both roles. She worked 6 days a week to keep a roof over our heads. When she would get home, she would be so tired, but she would take the time to throw a football with me in the yard. She was twice the dad that my father should have been. Now she is getting old, and her health is failing. Breaks my heart. I'm just glad that I am not the only one who feels this way.
Absolutely a great video! I'm a grandpa now, but i see the lagacy of my father being passed on to my grandkids, thanks to 3 great sons. I miss your words of guidance so much dad.
As a father of two,I worry what kind of world my children will face? And I hope and pray that I've been a good dad?Being a musician, this song has always had a special place in my heart.God bless you Mr. Harn, and your family.
I don't think I've cried this much in the last two years. I have always loved this song. Thanks for sharing his life in pictures. I know I definately would have been honored to be able to say 'that was my dad'. Five star video and song.
Great tribute to his father. Don't talk about a musician as a father is more important than just a role model. I'm not talking to the person who made the video but those of you who comment on it. I'm 26 and I love my dad he's a great man who has been through a lot of hardships and still managed to support his children. Love ya dad, even though you still get under my skin sometimes man. haha. God bless all the good fathers out there.
OH my goodness..what a magnificent and fabulous tribute to you father, I dont even know you and I am proud of you...I know your father is very proud of you...yes he is still proud of you...even in that beautiful place...we never really die, just change outfits...smiling with tears
My Dad is 73.. the lady was nice but she was upfront about it... they can;t be sure if that procedure will even work.. He has a bad heart and his arieries are clogged.. They did one procedure where they opened them up, but they are getting bad again...
Hi... very beautiful video... My Father is dying from kidney disease. Stage 4 and does not want further treatment.. I am so sad... I do not want him to leave me.. He is my champion through my dealings with CP and how nasty some people can be.. I love him so much it hurts.. I just never say "I love you" near enough... I need lots of preyers now more then ever... (crying)
I think that's why Dan Fogelberg wrote this song: appreciate what you have, cherish it, let it live on.
"His blood runs through my instrument, and his song is in my soul," means "He has made (is making) a great impact on my life (since Dan was a musician)."
"My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man; I'm just a living legacy to the leader of the band," means "I tried to be like him, but I didn't try hard enough. I can still carry on his reign (his legacy). He created my life."
There's still time...how old is he? My father is 58, and just went on dialysis last July. He feels much better since he went on it, but he nearly didn't go on dialysis at all--he had a bunch of negative expectations of it. Maybe some kind of support group or message board could convince your dad to get further treatment? Dialysis is not the end of the world. It's usually 3 and a half hours or so, 3 times a week.
I hope you had a good life with him! We all die though, take comfort in the memories you have and can still make. The only heaven is the one you have right here....
Since YouTube in all their wisdom, can't place comment replies in the correct place, I'll write who the comment was written for when it isn't clear. I am truly, humbly touched by how this video has moved people. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
and sadly "papa,i don't think i said, i love you near enough" at that part of the song, tears always begins to gently roll down my cheeks. i am his living legacy i guess. that's the way i'd put it.
this song always reminded me of my dad. besides that he played this song very well when i was a kid, the lyrics are somewhat inter-twined with the story of his life and mine. he was a carpenter's son, and he tried to be in the army once but later on ended up as a local musician which in turn influenced me a lot. he taught me how to play this song actually and at that time,he was the leader of his own band. he died when i was 20. and yes, i'd thank him for a lot of things.
For mangabdul: I'm sorry you lost your dad when you were so young. I imagine this song is extremely meaningful for you. I hope it makes you feel close to your dad. I'm sure he knows all the things you are thankful for.
Sorry to hear about the loss of your Dad, I hope you have many wonderful memories of him to get you through and eventually find peace in your heart. God bless.
My Dad passed away three years ago and this song has always reminded me of him since he was not only a military officer but an accomplished musician. This video is a wonderful tribute to your leader of the band. :)
"The leader of the band is tired and his eyes are growing old, but his blood runs through my instrument and his song in his my soul. My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man- I'm just a living legacy to the leader of the band."
"The leader of the band is tired and his eyes are growing old, but his blood runs through my instrument and his song in his my soul. My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man- I'm just a living legacy to the leader of the band."
For Grimmest117: My prayers are with you. Sounds as if you are learning the lessons you are supposed to learn, regardless of what your dad tried to teach you. Your comment helped my level of gratitude. Thanks for posting.
I'm so glad I found this on YouTube. My father James Farmer also worked with your dad on the School Band and Chorus of America tours for a few years. My father passed away Dec 26, 1995 and this song also is special to me. Thanks for the video. IT's a great tribute.
I was young during the SBA/SCA years, but I remember the name Jim Farmer! I'm glad you commented, as the comments dearest to my heart are from those who were involved with SBA. So sorry about your dad's passing. I'm sure his spirit lives on in his music and in those he touched with it. Again, thank you, Leah.
Is Mr. Harn still alive? I saw this video several months ago and posted a comment then, hoping I could somehow get in touch with him. Can anyone help me? Thanks!
To remember Fogelberg you must also remember my dad, Art Johnson, uncle August Elden Johnson, Louis Bartlett, his wife Alberte who just passed away in July at 92, Fred Huber, Elmer Septsy(sp), and Stoskow. These were the bandsmen in Peoria during the 1950's. I would dedicate thois song to my cousins John, Julie and Jeannie, Julie and Marie Bartlett, the Hubers, the Spetsy's and the Stowskow's. We all played as kids at the district family reunions along with Dan. What a great time. Who knew, eh?
I'm so awed that this video has touched a chord with you and others. I suspect it's all really Dan Fogelberg and the beautiful song. My dad worked in Bloomington, IL and knew Dan's dad (probably would have been in the 60s or early 70s that they conversed.) Makes me wonder if my dad knew any of the folks you mentioned. Small world.
For Obelisk2290: This song really does relate to all fathers and children. For some of us, it's more literal, but it's no less meaningful in a symbolic way. Bless you and your dad
For all the fathers who were musicians. My grandfather was a musician and orchestra leader. My father was a singer and multi-instrumentalist who sang in many choirs from childhood and played in many bands and orchestras. My mother was a fine singer and my father always accompanied her when she performed. I wish I could have inherited his musicianship but at least I think my singing is pretty good. My sister & I now sing together so this song means a lot to me. RIP Dan Fogelberg.
Leader of the band ; was a song for my dad, many years before he passed on ................for me! I really love this song and it will remain "loved" , "Cherished" for as long as we ( & those who knew him) Live.....
The "great man" of whom a couple of you spoke, is Dan Fobelberg & he wrote & sings this song "Leader of the Band". He was a very prolific song writer & a phenomenal singer(not to mention GORGEOUS)! He passed away last year(2007) on Dec.16th (my birthday, no less)! He died at age 56 of prostate cancer, that wasn't discovered on time. Check out some of his other songs, like "Run For The Roses". It's a GREAT song about the life of a horse bred to compete in & hopefully win, the Kentucky Derby.
I had his greatest hits cassette way back when, then I bought his greatest hits CD.
I've always had a great love for this guy. His voice is like no other on earth. Many wonderful memories in my life have been forged around Dan's songs.
God surely is smiling now having Dan with him singing his perfect ballads.
How does one listen to Dan sing and not get moved?
Rest in peace my brother, may God keep you safe forever....
What a wonderful song... I heard this song few times, and everytime it plays, i really listen to it... Eventhough i dont know this song, and the singer, i know, and i feel, he's a great man, with a great heart and soul...
Tulad ngayon, habang pinapakinggan ko to, kinikilabutan ako, tagos sakin yung kanta, grabe and ganda talaga.....
I cried harder watching your family video , then When watching Mr. Hollands Opus. Thank you for letting me live vicariously through you. The leader of our band(family) died when I was only 3 years old. I am 45
For sweettrt: Mr. Holland's Opus reminded me so much of my dad and certain parts of his story! I'm glad the video could bring you some moments of happiness. I'm sure the "leader of your band" looks with love and pride as he has watched your achievements through the years. Wishing you peace.
The song is awsome. Absolutly beautiful. The tribute is very touching. A great tribute to whom I assume was a great man. There simply is not enough stuff like this on-line.
This song is fantastic, and the presentation of your families photo's in sink with the music is wonderful. Your father must be very proud of you as you obviously are of him.
I've searched & searched for something on Edward T Harn. I was a member of the 1973 European tour of School Band & Chorus of America. Wonderful memories. And I played this song for my Dad before he died - - another lover of music, as am I. A Great Tribute. Wish I could find other 1973 members.
The greatest happening of the last 3 year is the establishment of the "YOUTUBE" community which so many of wonderful clips, this one is one of them, not only share great music, if also share a lot of warmth, kindness and encouragement.
Rest in peace, Dan Fogelberg. You are the Leader of the Band.

The years roll by...
And they never roll back.

We really enjoyed it and it brought back memories for us.

i never had the experience of growing up with my father because he passed away too early when i was only 5. he left five kids in care of mom. to listen to this song and its lyrics makes you just sit and stare at nothing and start to shed tears in the eye. very powerful song. thank you for uploading.

It's so sad that we all seem to have this connection with his words and he is now gone forever. He was taken way too soon.
It may not be too late for those of you, who still have parents that you have not talked to in a while, for whatever reason.
They will be gone forever one day....
What ever your doing right now. Call, before it's too late.

Hi... very beautiful video... (crying)
TGAHFAN 3 years ago

It's usually 3 and a half hours or so, 3 times a week.

and sadly "papa,i don't think i said, i love you near enough" at that part of the song, tears always begins to gently roll down my cheeks. i am his living legacy i guess. that's the way i'd put it.

this song always reminded me of my dad. besides that he played this song very well when i was a kid, the lyrics are somewhat inter-twined with the story of his life and mine. he was a carpenter's son, and he tried to be in the army once but later on ended up as a local musician which in turn influenced me a lot. he taught me how to play this song actually and at that time,he was the leader of his own band. he died when i was 20. and yes, i'd thank him for a lot of things.

I've always had a great love for this guy. His voice is like no other on earth. Many wonderful memories in my life have been forged around Dan's songs.
