Became a fan of F1 from 1981 so wasn't familiar with the 70's era apart from the big names. Saw a documentary this week on Peter and I've got to say I feel a sadness for the loss of someone special. I don't know how fast he was or how many more races he would have won had he not left too soon. But listening to him being interviewed reminds me that we have far too few drivers today with something genuinely interesting and thoughtful to say. Class tribute for a class act.
Watched him race the Porche 917 with Steve McQueen at Sebring. Andretti came from behind with a stunning drive in the Ferrari 512 to just barely win. Otherwise Revson/McQueen would have won overall but still won in class. Beautiful tribute.
@girlishfun Peter was driving a 3 litre Porsche 908 that had a lot less power that Mario's 5 litre Ferrari. Peter's skill had the car in front of a lot of faster cars.
@lfulhorst you're right the white porshe 908 #48 was far less powerful and made the race all the more exciting as they almost won it! steve mcqueen kept that car and was part of his estate sale after he passed. revson and mcqueen were a fantastic pilot combo.
He was one of my favorite racers and my inspiration to collect , race H.O. Slot Cars.I have a small room dedicated to Peter Revson from pictures to model cars, memorabillia. I have 20,000 cars to date. I began in 1973 when I was 10 and never stopped.
Yes that's Hulme and Graham, there is a really good shot of a morose looking Denny in the pits the next day.....he was pretty close to Peter. And Denny was more of a feely guy than most racers. He was a bit emotional when no one was looking.
Peter Revson loved racing. He did not need to race. He chose to race, and worked his way up from the bottom trundling around Europe in an old van with his car.
Watkins Glen Tran-am - 1968. I watched from inside the top of the esses. Dan Gurney bumped Peter's Javelin. Two laps later, Peter hooked Gurney and sent him off the track. I was convinced at that point, and followed his career from there on. I was devastated when Autoweek came with the news of his death.
Peter was not only a great driver, but a one of Racing's nicest people. If any family member is checking, let them know I saw him to be a man who had so many friends and was loved and respected by everyone in the Racing Community, as well as those who loved the sport as he loved it. I'll never forget the name.......
Peter Revson. (1939-1974) Thanks so much for posting, and God Speed.
I was at Indianapolis when Revson won the pole. It was great. All month long Donohue was going out and setting new unofficial lap records and finally befoe qualifying he went 177. 38 years ago and 50mph slower than today. Donohue didn't go as fast as he had and Revson went faster and finally he came around doing as well or better that Donohue the announcer shouted out, "Hold on to your seats he's going for the pole." He got it too. It was a great moment.
After much research into the demise of Revson, several things have turned up that are telling.
Revson was trying to beat the track record, and he felt the car was perfect. He had been running it for quite a while, stopping only for fuel and tires. He took on soft tires, stated he was going for the record, against protests from the engineers, who wanted to look the car over. He never made it back around to get his flying lap. As we all know a suspension failure threw him into the barrier,
I watched "Revie" race many times back-in-the-day and he seemed to have what we all wished for; looks, money and he could race at the highest level. It wasn't until years later when I could get out on the track that I got an understanding of how intoxicating it becomes when you get "in-the-zone" with your self, the car and the track. Then "pushing it" just seems so right and finding that last "10th-of-a-10th" is what you have to do. It is unfortunate that he had to pay such a high price! RIP
I remember hearing on the radio that he had been killed. I was devastated. Still upset when I think about it. As someone said earlier, the 70's where hard on racers and racing fans.
Peter Revson was one of my childhood heroes, I watched him race at Mid-Ohio, many many times. 73-74-75 were hard years for little kids who were race fans, Donahue, Cevert, Williamson.....these people who are considered "heroes" these days, "men" who don't
even begin to compare to those who raced F1 from early 80's on back to the beginning. TO even mention names like Sullivan and Revson in the same sentence borders on heresy. To those knights in shining armor who never knew what hit them!
Thank you much for this!!! While others had heroes from other sports, F1 was my sport and Peter Revson was my hero from a day when F1 was still filled with gentlemen racers. To this day I am saddened whenever I see the occasional picture of him.
Outstanding!!! Many thanks for creating this. I too don't mind admitting tears came at the end. One item; you have the 1972 M20, #4, viewed under 1971. In 1971, Peter drove the #7 M8F, in which he won the Can-Am title.
there was such a feeling of comradeship during these times. whenever there was a crash they would jump in to try and help, as Graham Hill is shown here. i doubt many F1 drivers would do that now, although the risk of a serious crash has greatly deminished
Peter was the most wonderful man I have ever known and loved. I wish to this day he had lived to see his son. He just knew it was going to be a boy. Forever my love.
I'm not saying they were damn twins, but there were a few similarities - Can-Am, Indy, (some) ties to NYC...and name the last two American playboy racers with ultra-cool personalities?
Some time ago I emailed one of the managing partners for McLaren during the period of time Peter Revson drove for them. He told me that Peter actually survived the crash, but died from smoke and fume inhalation very shortly after.
I met Peter Revson in San Francisco at a car show. He was an amazing gentleman and a talented driver. I remember too well when he died ... thank you for this tribute; it's good to know that he won't be forgotten.
Dan Gurney never raced a top car in F1. He won Porsche's only win in 1962. Beat Jack Brabham when they were team mates in 1964. Won in the Eagle-Weslake at Spa in 1967. Pete Revson's both wins came in the McLaren M23,which most expert believe was the best car in the second half of the 1973 season. The M23 won 16 races. This record still stands.
Peter Revsen was probably the most talented and the best F1 Driver to ever come from the United States. Peter died way too soon so we will never know what he could have accomplished in Formula 1 with those powerful Ford engines in UOP Shadow.
Dan Gurney was the most talented F1 driver from the USA. Jim Clark only feared him and had the most respect for him out of all his competitors. Jim Clark knew he would be in trouble if Dan Gurney ever got to drive a good and reliable car. Pete Revson was good too and sadly died too early.
Denny Hulme was pretty much untouchable in Can-am and still holds the record for the most wins and poles. But he also drove the best car,the McLaren-Chevrolet. Denny Hulme wasn't that good in F1. Pete Revson won both his raced driving the McLaren M23,which most experts believe was the most competitive car at the later part of the 1973 season. The M23 won both titles in 1974.Still holds the record for the most wins for a single model with 16.
I know, in the Brabham-Repco. But Jack Brabham was 42 as his team mate, and Jim Clark had 4 wins that season to Brabham's and Hulme's 2 each. The bad reliability of the new Cosworth DFV, meant he lost an easy title.
By the early 70's Hulme still won the odd race, but he only had 1 pole his entire career.
Hulme was good. But I wouldn't compare him to Clark,Stewart,Hill,Fittipaldi or even Ickx.
Oh My God!The crash looks horrible, just look at the body.Horrific...Peter was definately a great talent,he would have achieved some good results in the Shadow
You did an amazing job with that video. Thank for you making it and thank you for sending me a message that it was posted. Peter Revson's racing for McLaren started my life long appreciation for McLaren.

Well he was brilliant in Can-Am. And back in the late 60's, early 70's those Can-Am beasts were way faster than those in Formula 1
Anybody that could race those, let alone win in those deserves all praise.
I know he got seriously burnt trying to qualify for the Indy500 some year. But overcame his injuries to race for years.
Sadly he left us in 1992, while driving in Bathurst, in Australia.
