Oh you really should try playing it sometime, its a really fun and funny series (well for some who can appreciate it at least) not that I support piracy but unless you have a script at your side while importing them I suggest getting a SNES Emulator and a ROM for Earthbound and a GBA and ROM for Mother 3 after you apply the translation patch at Starmen (dot) net, only because there will never be a way to legally play the games over in the U.S. (an actual copy of Earthbound is costly today) 2bct.

So I suggest you play it, even if Smash Bros. has made you curious, don't be ashamed if it has, a lot of Mother fans were introduced to the series through Smash, even I was and I love the games, so if you want to experience Ness and Lucas' games firsthand I say go for it.
