First heard this on a Men They Couldn't Hang EP in the mid '80s and loved it since then. A wonderful, poignant song and even more looking at the world we live in - nearly 100 years since the great war and little has changed.
As for this version - stunning. Sung with real feeling and a deep sense of loss - great voice, great clarity and great guitar work. Impressive.
used to represent everyone. It wasn't used because he was Irish. He just happened to be Irish. The name stuck in Bogle's mind probably for no other reason than it scane and rhymes with the next line
For those of us who have been on the front lines this really holds a special place. Thanks for such a great performance - it brought tears to my eyes. Cheers.
Your voice is absolutely wonderful. I have no idea why, but you remind me of Piper from Charmed... Which is a good thing, by the way. =) Amazing job. Brought me to tears.
If you are going to sing someone elses song, at least get the name right...It's "No Man's Land"..and for a bit of credit to the writer...it was written by Eric Bogle...
Good job; personally, while I know Eric Bogle himself often performs this just with guitar (and guitar accompaniment) but I think you really need pipes, banjo, accordion or concertina too.
Great rythm & vocal version..I think u should try a slow pick Ballad , Your vocals could give real feelings to some of the sad emotional verses....This was song was banned from Uk broadcast because of its supposely anti british verse..""Oh Young Willie Mcbride I can;t help wondering why? to those that lie here know why did they die..Did they really believe when they answered there call, that this war would end wars... Well they were promised a united Ireland...maybe thats the guilt :))
@mollieheaffer1996 ...."This was song was banned from Uk broadcast because of its supposely anti british verse." I don't know where you picked up your info from but this song has never been banned in the UK; it is not anti-British; and it has nothing to do with the political situation in Ireland. It is simply an anti-war song concerning the futility of the conflict and the massive loss of life. The song is not about anyone called Willie McBride. It is about all the fallen and the name was
I relate to your repulican view.50000 irish died in WW1 only recently remembered in the Republic However while theres a verse that do highlight the issue of why an irishman died defending they very own oppressor & foe, I think it trues moral & ethical message , Why did all Those Young Willie McBride have to died, Irish, Scots English, German, Russian & many more nationalitys..The pointless suffering of millions caused by Man's intolerance & inhumanity to his fellow man...
@ATCIanMacDonald i'm not sure whether she's playing in the same key but the chords are: G, Em, C, Am, D, D, C, G,. The chorus consists of the same chords but in a different order. the chorus starts in D
I'm from France, and wish to thank you for this cover. Never the fallen of this fucking brother war, the one wich should have been the "last of the last", as people said in France... But unfortunately it was not ! Thanks again!
This song really says everything about the futility of war. Such a young singer who does this song a great justice. LET US NOT FORGET THE FALLEN. Brilliant! just brilliant!
Ive only just come across your covers, u sing all my favourite songs, green fields of france, song for ireland and the parting glass, im 23 and not many my age know these songs and for someone of your age to be singing them is very impressive, well done :)
@TheBigSmoke2011 It's actually by Eric Bogle, a Scot, and it's an anti-war song, not a Republican song, not that I mind Republican songs, as long as they aren't GOP, LOL!
@neotenousape However while this verse do highlight the issue of why an irishman died defending they very own oppressor & foe, I think it trues moral & ethical message , Why did all Those Young Willie McBride have to died, Irish, Scots English, German, Russian & many more nationalitys..The pointless suffering of millions caused by Man's intolerance & inhumanity to his fellow man...
