"Suspicion" is a song written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman. It was one of 25 songs Pomus and Shuman wrote for Elvis Presley. Suspicion featured on Presley's 1962 album Pot Luck. The song became a hit in 1964, through an Elvis sound-alike cover version by Terry Stafford. The Stafford version of Suspicion peaked at No. 3 in the U.S, and No. 31 in the UK Singles Chart.
I agree. In the studio he managed to produce a fairly convincing Elvis sound but it doesn't seem like he could pull it off "live." Darren Spears from Go Cat Go,on the other hand, was incredible. Check out his live performances.
I knew Terry he was a genuine person with a lot of heart that just enjoyed entertaining and sharing his music, but remember he was a musical talent. Not just a good voice a talented guitarist.

Good point Joel.... They did ok but it looks like Terry was having problems with the sound/mike. And perhaps he was missing that signature riff that the song pretty much requires.
this guy sounds like he's out of breath /struggling. I have never ever heard anyone on this planet that had that unique set of vibes as ELVIS PRESLEY...
He's struggling with the monitor system. Yes you are correct about Elvis's unique set of vibes for sure. But Terry had the hit with this song. And Elvis struggled and sound out of breath on stage many times. Of course he moved around a lot more and took a lot more drugs.
I have alot of respect for Terry. I have learned alot about Terry . I would have to say Teery would be in a class of one hit wonders and possesed a unique uncanny voice that mimicks Elvis Presley. There are several people that could almost fool you in thinking it is Elvis on the radio. Ronnie McDowell comes to mind Jimmy Ellis and Ral Donner.
That's great to hear. Terry yes unfortunately only had one huge hit. A couple others in the top 40 that didn't go much of anywhere. He was pretty much screwed by the industry as many were and never made a dime off his biggest hit. Fortunately he wrote Amarillo by Morning which Strait recorded and Big in Vegas that Owens recorded so he got along ok. He's not like the others you mention though as he never tried to sound like Elvis nor make a career out of sounding like him.
Bob Summers has played on my sessions. And engineered and produced a lot of things as well. Many movie and Tv soundtracks such as Born Losers, The original Tv Series Grizzly Adams, Last of the Mohicans etc. He was the guitar player on Little Marcies first two albums and played on and engineered recordings for the Osmonds. He also recorded some of the Beachboys first album as well.
Great memories...Terry was a friend of my Uncle Ed Kick. He stayed at our house a couple of times in San Dimas in late 60's. I was around 10. He would sing Susy-Q in a great high voice for me and my friends. He had to duck under the door...he was a tall boy! Terry had a beautiful girlfiend at the time, Sue I believe. Not sure what happened to her? I never heard from him again thru my uncle. Anyway, that is my memories of Terry.
Glad to have heard him sing live from our couch a few times! Rob
Hi Enuflovefor3. Good username I envy your knowing Terry. I grew up hearing radio DJ's refer to him as "Canada's Elvis". Was he really Canadian & what did he think of the comparison to Elvis? Of course, it really is amazing how much alike they sounded. For my money I prefer Terry's Suspicion to anyone else. Thanks for posting your memories.
Terry was about as far from Canadian as you could get.He was born an okie, grew up in Amarillo and came to Los Angeles in the early sixties, where he spent about the next 25 years. Las known address I had for him in california was in Garden Grove. I didn't see him again but heard of the news of his passing about 12 years ago. I don't even think he ever played in Canada.
Hi poodleheadbruce, nice surprise hearing from you! Not only were we told that Terry was Cdn. but that he had gone through studies to become a priest & then changed his mind. Wonder now if there's any truth to that. Of course, what really matters is that he pursued a career in music & we all benefitted from hearing his wonderful voice. Best regards, Darlene (Toronto, Ontario).
Terry told me that the original title was Big in Amarillo, that Buck changed it then stuck his name on the song as Co-writer, something which bothered Terry till his death.
Terry's version is Big In Dallas. Buck made Terry a few $ for sure. He never mentioned to be bothered by this to me. Heck Brian Wilson did the same thing with one of Chuck Berry's songs. And yes Terry got Suspicion from Elvis' Potluck album which he brought into Bob Summers recording studio back in 1963. George Strait made him a pretty penny with Amarillo by Morning as well. I do know he was upset with the industry for awhile after never receiving a penny for Suspicion. Great Man Terry!
I knew Terry for many years and played guitar in different incarnations of the road show, as well as doing small venues as a duo. It was usually either myself or Johnny Fortune who would go out with him to get the local house bands through the songs. Sadly, Johnny just passed away a couple years ago. I always thought of Terry as my mentor, he took me under his wing when I was young and I learned a hell of a lot about the industry from him.
Well nice to meet you then poodleheadbruce. I too have performed with Terry and Johnny Fortune was my lead guitar player for 4 yrs in the 90's. Both were good friends. Johnny passed in March of 2006. Terry in 1996. I play drums presently for Bob Summers who produced Suspicion. He has recently done a new version for me which we will put the vocals on this month. Terry's song you are talking about however is Big in Dallas not Amarillo.
When I was young I left my home and went away to Dallas. With my guitar and my dreams I had to try to play and sing in Dallas. But my mama told me I was wrong and she begged me to stay at home. But my will was strong and I had to make it Big in Dallas. They'll put my name up in lights when Im playing and the lines out in front will be long. I'll get a standing ovation from the people when I start to sing my song. Just the first verse but for sure it's Dallas. Written by Terry Stafford
Nope. "Suspicion" was written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman. It originally was recorded by Terry Stafford, but Elvis Presley's version was released before Terry's version. Pomus & Shuman wrote 19 of the songs recorded by Elvis Presley.
Hi, guys... so glad I found you...would love to have Terry's version of "Amarillo By Morning" uploaded here for everyone to hear. It is soooooooooooo much better than George Straits version released in the 80s... Terry was such a great singer and performer. Hats off to you guys for playing in his road shows. Terry is deeply missed. If no one has the recording, I do, but don't know how to make a video and upload the song. I don't have any pictures of him ;0( Any help out there???
I know that Terry was a great performer, no doubt about that. But, George Strait's version of " Amarillo by Morning " is a classic. George's voice is much more suited to sing a song about The rodeo life. Terry has a great voice, just doesn't sound as if it's suited for Country Music.
if you check it out Elvis Presley put out suspicion in '62 and the album credits Doc Pommus and Mort Schuman as co-writers. They wrote many Elvis songs. Who is Tony Seago?
I KNOW for a fact that Terry got the song off of that Elvis album. Terry was the ultimate Elvis fan.
Hey Joel, my daughter and I paid a visit to Terry's grave sight last week. We sang Suspicion for him.
