@gupyandgipy No, it was because in Liszt's (and Beethoven's) times, there were no means of recording and transmitting music as sound. Liszt was remarkable in his talent for constructing piano arrangements so that those without access to an orchestra could thrill to the magisterial transcendence of this music. Few composers have ever had Liszt's talent for turning the fortepiano into a self-contained orchestra. Whatever you say about transcriptions, this is a masterpiece!
Of course you think that, Grammophone is one of the best classical labels! Naxos is a budget collection, and a damned good one at that! I dont expect to get great performances out of Naxos, but rather to get acquainted with music for under $10. This recording is not bad either, thanks for posting.
Hey, hold on! Throw your preoccupations aside! This is extraordinarily well played! With sense for orchestral sound and clarity in bringing forth the different parts.
Who doubts this should try him/herself......
And it is an absolutely masterful transcription as well!!!
dredeye your info or notion of Liszt is totally incorect. It was how a much uninformed 19th ent saw him Busoni respected because he found the truth.Get the mass ,b minor sonata! Dante sonata, most of the late worksNuage Gris, even the last 4 Hungarian rhaps show GENIUS .He is greater than alkan ,Moscheles or anyone else except Schumann,Chopin. Mendellssohn never showed his pianistic genius like the symphonied, chamber music. Youare missing out on some gret music.St Elizabeth oratorio so much!
@Nothingness159 Liszt was a better pianist and beethoven was a better composer. Most of the stuff liszt did was transcriptions and enhancements but he has far less original works than beethoven.
@dredeye Sure thing, but he's still the one who wrote the "Douze études d'exécution transcendantes". And as far as I know, some of those etudes are among the most difficult and beautiful works ever written for piano. Liszt also composed a lot, he wasn't only doing transcriptions or enhancements.
@huholah I doubt anyone is going to forget that. Most people aren't even aware of the Liszt transcriptions. Even if they are it's not like it's readily available.
@huholah just as much, are you kidding me? Liszt was a great performer and arranger, but his compositional skills were not in the same league as beethoven, who changed music forever. Mozart, Bach and Beethoven will always be on a whole different level than the other composers.
Excellent attempt to transcribe the great Liszt by an extraordinary and complex as the 9th symphony Beethoven Symphony. But as I like the beginning of the Scherzo should have been more delicate violins and to stress upon the famous counterpoint to the drums as major sticking ff on the right hand ...
Even so I like too, but could never express the depth of the finest performances of this work by Beethoven.
I merely plink the ivories, but I've gotta say that this is absolutely amazing sounding to me and a superb rendition of the full orchestral piece. Yeah, I'm not too picky.
You can't just play something at any speed if it's completely off of what the composer wanted. He DID play it a bit too slow. But it was great hearing the Liszt transcription, I was interested in learning it so I could see how it sounded.
let me correct my statement: he's able to play it at any speed anyway.
Scherbakov knows more about classical interpretation than we all here. in addition, performance standards change with time, ppl look different at the same pieces, so this might be a possible explanation. so playing devices are looked differently at, the actual background is payed more attention. difficult stuff to discuss...
I don't see why you can't. A score isn't holy writ. One of the great things about art is that you can explore it, maybe finding value there that the composer never even considered. There is value in trying to present a piece as accurately as you can, but you needn't be locked into lockstep reconstruction. You will achieve complete fidelity with a modern piano anyway, because it is different from those of Beethoven's time. The piano Liszt knew was already different from the one Beethoven knew.
Because that's how art is, if you go completely off, then you're not playing Beethoven. That's why I have no respect for Glenn Gould's non-Bach recordings, because he goes way off then what is written. He plays Bach like a genius, but everything else he plays like Bach, and he ruins them. Also, exploring it is different than changing the music. It's just something you don't do. If it says Prestissimo, you don't go playing it Allegro, it's written Prestissimo.
Well many people told me that I should listen to it as I play the piano for my studies. I did and I very much disliked it. It sounded more like showing off something and I really felt that he was missing many important musical parts.
I told my piano teacher that I heard the recordings and that I really didn't like them. I was afraid she was going to call me crazy but she said that she didn't like them either. She asked me why and I explained it all to her.
and who made you judge about whether or not Liszt's arrangement compares to Beethoven's original score?
I think you are either dum enough to try and lower me to feel more "cultivated", i guess, or are you saying that the fact that Beethoven bothered writing for at least 24 different instruments, one choir and 4 soloists superfluous?
You started this argument whilst I had said that I liked this video. You are just a pompous arse that can't accept other people's opinions without them recognising you being right. Let me guess: you got a degree in jerkology?! I finished my musical studies in two different national European conservatories (where the history and music comes from).Oh and putting a thumbs down for every comment of mine makes you even more a failure than trying to argue with me. Don't bother, I won't respond anymore
GUYS GUYS..... lets remember that Lizst himself had said the most of the 9th symphony (esp the 4th mvt) was near impossible to transcribe. Liszt had actually abandoned the project earlier and it took 20 years before he was able to complete the transcription. now as to the tempo of the scherzo here, its not too far off from the orchestral performances ive heard. this is piano version of a full orchestral piece. im a good pianist and i doubt i could play this scherzo at a tempo faster then this.
When I was a child, in Kansas, our local station had as it's opening music for 10 oclock news the 2nd mvmnt, with orchestra, and it scared me at age 3,4,5 years old! It was the raw power. This was 50 years ago.Needless to say, there are archaic feelings for me yet today from this movement.
So I'm following with the sheet music I got off of IMSLP (God's gift to classical instrumentalists who need sheet music but have no budget)...
My God, this piece is relentless! Having it set into a piano medium so I can relate to the playing, I can see why everyone thought Beethoven was crazy! It's brilliant, beautiful music, but it's also an athletic feat to play!
I've definitely got Scherbakov on my radar, now, though. I love Naxos' recordings.
Hm. Quite. IMSLP doesn't have it, and I've actually never heard it.
though IMSLP has several transcriptions of Beethoven's Große Fuge for two pianos/piano solo by other transcribers, including a two-piano by Beethoven himself...
I meant the 2 piano arrangement by Beethoven. I need to do better research I guess. The manuscript was discovered only a few years ago and I wondered if there was anything to incorporate into the current version. I do love music a bit more than most.
Hello there! I discovered that the link in the info section that says 'for stereo sound' links to this same clip..
However: When pressing it, it automatically opened in another window tab precisely 3/4 bar behind the originally opened track. Playing these simultaneously was an unusual experience! =)
Especially in the more 'complicated' parts it gave a whole new dimension, and though it is not recommended for the real classical music fans, I enjoy experimenting and this was amzing! Thank you!

I personally feel that Glenn Gould actually ruined Bach and it got over-rated. So in the end it's only one's opinion against another.
As for these arrangements, I really appreciate them but they won't of course match the original. This recording however is sublime.
