I agree "tonyatmidnight." This made no sense. I remember reading that (if I'm not mistaken...) the great Douglas Marland started this storyline but, quit the show and hackwritiers finished it up.
I don't recall that storyline through actually watching it but i've learned of the show's history and GL was a very different show...well, it still focuses on family and friendship conflicts. You're right...there was a gothic feel to it. The Spaulding mansion at one point looked like the interior of Count Dracula's castle...lots of dark and under-lit rooms adding to the atmosphere.
Although much of the darkness for the Spaulding mansion was seen during the Roger as fugitive storyline back in 1979/80 & then later in 1984 when Alan was involved with both the Dreaming Death storyline & the Spauling mansion itself was involved with the Susan Piper/Barbados Spaulding storyline.
I had to roll my eyes at Amanda going after her mother's husband.

This looks like something ABC would of probably have done years ago.Port Charles mixed with Dark Shadows.
Gothic Settings.
Guiding Light was very different back in the 1980's.I like it better back in the 1980's then today.

I was in junior high when this was going on. Guiding Light was so gothic back then. I don't remember any of that story. Interesting stuff.
