He does, but we guitarist actually use forbidden satanic witchcraft to hold it between the thumb and the index's metacarpus when we have to do complex tapping that can't be handled by the middle finger alone. :D

that is a helpful tip. I have grown accustomed to fingerstyle acoustic, so i have never really used a pick

Well some people like to put it in their mouth but it's less practical in my opinion. Anyway, it also depends of the type of tapping you're using. Basic EVH 3-notes thing can be done using the middle finger, so no need to get rid of the pick. I use a more like Stanley Jordan tapping, where it's not that easy.
