Probably because those big stars are sussposed to be in the final bowser battle. So the level layout will be different in other levels. (I not too sure why)

Bowser won't work cus he is only availible in the bower battle levels. And yoshi seems to only go on top of the castle( he will fall though the ground)

As for chain chomps....they should work!
