You will be interested this is not the original - But a Color REMAKE of the Black & white TV intro , so technically it is NOT the first ever Live TV Superman. There were several others before this one was filmed .
superman is not suppose to have his hands in his pockets at 36 secs because some people think that is a sign of rudeness or you have something to hide
@mrpsycholeojoey87 Not really. Hands in pockets, when paired with the easygoing slouch the alter-ego Kent adopts in this clip, instead connotes a relaxed attitude, "regular guy-ness", with maybe a bit of the world-weary, wiseguy attitude one would expect of a "reporter for a great metropolitan newspaper." Kal-el is just living his cover.
its funny how wee still use those terms for Sups "Faster than a speeding bullet etc", when nowdays he is MUCH faster than a speeding bullet, WAY more powerful thana locomotive and doesn't need to leap tall buildings at all, be it in a single bound or otherwise, since he can of course fly. in his 1st appearance tho he was only as strong as 10 men and cud survie 1 blasting shell
I watched it in black and white, that's how I remember it, and that's how it feels. If I saw Casablanca for the first time today and it was in color, I'd be confused, since it's so obviously meant for black and white.
No wonder THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN was so popular and I have all 6 seasons. Too bad Goerge Reeves died , they were planning a movie with him. Itwould havve been great.
It's easy to sneer at it today...but this actually represented the feelings we had for America in the late 50's-early 60's. We said the pledge with our hands over our hearts, "truth, justice and the American Way" actually meant something and we knew we were the good guys.
When I see/hear those who want to put America "in it's place", I know where they're coming from. Unfortunately, most people under 40 don't and get duped. They'll learn, but I'm afraid only after it's too late.
Yes it's Superman, strange visitor from another planet who came to Earth with powers and abilites far beyond those of mortal men. Superman, who can change the course of mighty rivers, bend steele in his bare hands, and who disguised as Clark Kent milded mannered reporter for a great metropolitan newspaper, fights a never ending battle for truth, justice, and the american way.
They replicated the opening from the original Fleischer Bros Superman cartoons from the early 1940s except in live action, I always get a kick out of that.
Even as a little kid watching this show after school, we used to complain about Superman not having enough super villains to fight. Smallville pulls no punches in that department.
I guess you can look at this TV show as a pretty good portrayal of Superman in his mid 40's. I guess by the time Superman was 45 years old (George Reeve's age by end), he had already defeated most of his super powered enemies.
Chissloan: If you're stateing this was "First Ever Live Action Superman TV Show"..you are so wrong. The show was done cheap,on an assembly line format with interacting scenes.A years worth of episodes (26) were done in 5 weeks. Armed with a full seasons scripts all scenes at The Daily Planet were done this week, special set scenes three weeks later and the same four flying effects later. All differently assembled together. Notice Clark Kents suit all the same in various shows.

@unque43 Agreed, todays tv is all about the money. My favorite show growing up was The Incredible Hulk with Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno. Smallville is ok, but They are stretching out the final season, ect. I quit watching after Kara (Supergirl) left. Although I did watch her return on last weeks episode.
Overall, this series was a bit silly and had primitive special effects. Still, I enjoyed it quite a lot. "Jimmy" really made the show so much better. And, tv and most all other things back then and into the early 1960s were so much better! Len-G
I have seen every single episode to this TV series. It was actually better than most of the TV shows made today- but it is rather old and outdated for anyone who was not around until after the 1970's. I bought all the seasons on DVD for my dad because he watched it back when he was a child. Then I decided to check them out myself as I am a huge Superman fan and have seen every film of him where he works alone (stories not about the Justice League). I always wonder why Lex Luthor never appeared.

@jimboster You mean invading countries for oil? Or could it be bullying anyone who doesn't agree with you, maybe it's supporting mad tyrants like Saddam?
FOR YOU TRIVIA BUFFS...THE WORDS "LOOK UP IN THE SKY" WERE SPOKEN BY ROBERT SHAYNE..AKA INSPECTOR HENDERSON. "IT'S A BIRD!" WAS SPOKEN BY NONE OTHER THAN GEORGE REEVES HIMSELF! AND "iT'S A PLANE!" WAS SPOKEN BY PHYLLIS COATES. (THE FIRST LOIS LANE).
AND THE REST OF THE NARRATION WAS DONE BY BILL KENNEDY WHO APPEARED IN THE EPISODE "JOEY" IN SEASON 3.
Amazing knowledge. Could you tell me why "Superman" was filmed in color, long before anyone had a color TV? I've never heard a straight answer to that question.
First of all, not all of AOS was filmed in color. The first two seasons were in B/W and the remaining seasons were shot in color. I think it was 52 in B/W and 52 in color for a total of 104. As to why the switch to color, the producers were looking towards the future of TV and that was color, even if nearly nobody could view the episodes in color at the time they were shot. This messed up Superman's costume colors in B/W because the suit was originally brown and gray.
Brown and gray looked better in B/W than Red, Blue and Yellow. It was good thinking on the producers part because eventually color TV came around and it made the show a better match with the color shows being shown with it, such as the 1960s Batman TV show. When I first saw AOS in the 1970s (I was born in 1967) it was shown on local L.A. TV station KCOP Channel 13 right after, you guessed it - DA-DA-DA-DA- BATMAN! I still like both shows!
According to a documentary I saw, the Black & White episodes were considered two heavy handed and dark by D.C. D.C. pressured the network to change the direction of the show. Once the season wrapped a new crew and new direction was chosen. DC got what it wanted. The choice of color was to lighten up the series and make it bright instead of dark.
@ZAPDUNGAA And the man pointing up to sky is Steve Carr. Brother of The Adventures of Superman director, Tommy Carr. Steve has appeared in the first 26 episodes of TAOS as an extra.
@snoooopin Even Superman couldn't stop this war. It will only be stop when JESUS CHRIST returns and putsw an end to all war. Judging by news headlines today it won't be long.
Consider there was no special effects to speak of this was pretty amazing, George Reeves was very athletic, he actually jumped through that open window and would land on a mattress etc.
Flying in through the window he would jump down off a step ladder. But he did it so well that when I was little I really believed he could fly.
I totally feel your pain. Commercials ruin and degrade these fine videos. Although I think this guy just recorded the peice from start to finish...and ergo, captured useless crap at the end.
That show used a lot of the old MuTel stock music themes, so you'll hear a lot of music underscoring used in many old TV shows, and also in Ren and Stimpy [LOL in Powdered Toastman, great cartoon]. Spectra92, This was shot in color but definitely, who had color TV in the 50s-60s. I didn't even have any color TV till the 70s
I wish all the shows of the 50s onwards would have been shot in color.Mainly for future prosperty
The producers thought ahead as did some others like Gerry Anderson.Message to today's filmmakers.Shoot on the best gear available like 4K plus resolution for the replacement of HD.
The stirring march music, the newsreel-style announcer and the man with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men: may sound old and corny now, but as kids this made a big impression. He fought for truth, justice and the American Way. All in all, not a bad message to impart to the youth of this country. We could use Superman again.
Yeh. I'd like to see Superman kick out the illegal immigrants, the terrists, the bombmakers, the dogfighters -- actually I'd like to see him kill the dogfighters.
The color opening was different than the original B&W. The train is different, the flying scene is different, if you look at both, you will see they are 2 different versions, similar but different.
With the exception to Superman's 3 and 4, every Superman has it's charm. All the way from the black and whites, the Fleishman cartoons, and so forth, all the way up to the epic classics such as the Richard Donnor films and the under appreciated Bryan Singer film. Even the ones from Super Friends and the recent Justice League. I admit some would wonder about Public Enemies about having any charm.
I recently saw a few clips of this series that I barely remembered from 1970s reruns on New York's Channel 11. Reeves' Clark Kent wasn't all that "mild-mannered." He was a believable big-city reporter. I think John Byrne may have picked up on this when he revamped Superman in the 1980s, making "Clark Kent" the real person and "Superman" the assumed identity. If you didn't know Clark, the tough big-city reporter and Pulitzer Prize-winner, was Superman, you'd still think he was a hero.
remember as a kid getting home after school with a sugarr daddy candybar and bottle of pepsi watching the greatest tv show ever..george reeves also had a bit parts in gone with the wind and from here to eternity..always loved noel neil as lois over phyliis coats,,noel neil ln two superman movies know which ones?
wow superman is the oldest super hero ever, but will always be my family's favorite :) I did not know he has been around since 1940s. WOW 69YRS OF SUPERMAN!!! :)
George Reeves WAS Superman! I grew up with the show, and never got tired watching it. Rent "Hollywoodlands" if you want to know how George Reeves was MURDERED!
The only "death staging" in the George Reeves case was the fact that everyone knew his ex Toni Mannix had used her hubby Eddie Mannix to put out a hit on Reeves for leaving her.
Later she felt bad about doing it and tried to call it off, but the hitters refused. (They usually do, since it's a matter of professional pride.) So everyone, including Reeves' new fiancee, was even joking about it, knowing it would be going down sooner or later, and it finally did the fateful night of that party.
It was VERY ironic that, playing a character who's faster than a speeding bullet, it was the aforementioned that ended hiis life on the night of 15-16 June 1959.
A supehero on earth... a superhero in heaven. We'll miss you DEARLY George....
I did not say he killed himself: I said it was a bullet that killed him. That does not neccesarily mean he commited suicide; I have my suspicions that someone staged his "suicide".
i don't believe he staged his death. all the theories hold up. especially the party of that night. i don't want to get any more into it. somebody will sue for libel : ).
George Reeves was the greatest Superman, period. Even the weakest episode of this show is tons better than 'Superman Returns' or any of that Smallville crap. These modern Supermen are sissy boys compared to Reeves.
sissy boys LOL. I third your motion. Both George Reeves and Christopher Reeve where great. I wonder who started the Reeve ancestry line. Probly some super duper man!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
George Reeves, worst superman I remember seeing, by far. I know Clark Kent is supposed to be from the small agricultural town and all, but damn, they have to get an actual farmer to play him?
Superman is supposed to look more in shape than Reeves. If he'd have even been good in the role, the physique would've been overlooked. Horrible casting. How do people say this guy was good as Superman? Must be pure nostalgia.
Sarcasm or not, in saying "white people" you're implying that white people don't want illegal aliens in the United States because illegals are not white. We allow plenty of non-white people into the USA each year, legally. Legal immigration has been shifted away from allowing mostly white Europeans to allowing more Asians and Mexicans in, especially into Calif. Our federal government should remove every illegal alien here no matter what color their skin might be.
We like to focus on Mex. & label them as scapegoats. Fear & ignorance is all the protectionists & xenophobes have to offer.
America has the greatest economy and also has the greatest amount of immigration (legal and illegal).
Learn basic economics, ^ get over your irrational fear of foreigners, because that ignorance is destroying America. Well let's stop before going off on an irrelevant topic
Yes I'm a protectionist. I want to protect my country from those who do not respect our immigration laws. We already have very liberal LEGAL immigration allowances. It's not too much to ask foreigners to respect our laws and wait your turn to immigrate here.
Superheroes didn't have to be beautiful and perfect in the 1950's the entire show was about how important one's character was - not one's appearance. I love Superman just the way he was. God rest his soul.
On the color thing, let me say that Bonanza was the first "network" show to be broadcasted in color in 1959. The reason for that was that Nbc also owned RCA & wanted to sell more color tvs. The half hours shows you mentioned were not network shows, but syndicated shows. I hope, that clears everything up.
When Geo. Reeves first stared in Superman in 1951 , he looked very young, but aged quite a bit,so in 1957 (his last yr as Superman) he looked quite old. I heard he had quite a wild private life.
yo the guy who plays superman looks really old, can someone tell me why they didn't cast anyone younger, he doesn't even look like he could play a super hero
He wasn't too old to play Superman. He was a hero to kids growing up and as someone said it was all about his character of doing good things and catching the bad guys with his super powers. It was a great TV show in it's day.
You didn't "grab" it off In2TV. Every video you've posted is from there, and you're quite obviously shilling for In2TV. How sad - I for one will be going out of my way to avoid the site since AOL obviously has no ethics. Lying and pretending to be an unbiased consumer is sad, sad, SAD.

@ZAPDUNGAA :
Amazing knowledge. Could you tell me why "Superman" was filmed in color, long before anyone had a color TV? I've never heard a straight answer to that question.
HotCuppaCoffee 1 year ago
@HotCuppaCoffee
Superbatfan 1 year ago
Brown and gray looked better in B/W than Red, Blue and Yellow. It was good thinking on the producers part because eventually color TV came around and it made the show a better match with the color shows being shown with it, such as the 1960s Batman TV show. When I first saw AOS in the 1970s (I was born in 1967) it was shown on local L.A. TV station KCOP Channel 13 right after, you guessed it - DA-DA-DA-DA- BATMAN! I still like both shows!
Superbatfan 1 year ago
@HotCuppaCoffee

Consider there was no special effects to speak of this was pretty amazing, George Reeves was very athletic, he actually jumped through that open window and would land on a mattress etc.
Flying in through the window he would jump down off a step ladder. But he did it so well that when I was little I really believed he could fly.

I wish all the shows of the 50s onwards would have been shot in color.Mainly for future prosperty

At least I know know that there were actual colors in those days. Who knew?!

The color opening was different than the original B&W. The train is different, the flying scene is different, if you look at both, you will see they are 2 different versions, similar but different.
Pedrooch 2 years ago 2
B & W much better, IMHO.
HickysBoy 2 years ago 2
I like the B&W episodes better. Also, the flying scenes are much better in the B&W episodes, than they were in the color episodes.
Pedrooch 2 years ago 8
With the exception to Superman's 3 and 4, every Superman has it's charm. All the way from the black and whites, the Fleishman cartoons, and so forth, all the way up to the epic classics such as the Richard Donnor films and the under appreciated Bryan Singer film. Even the ones from Super Friends and the recent Justice League. I admit some would wonder about Public Enemies about having any charm.
Potrimpo 2 years ago
@Pedrooch It's odd; the list of shows that got worse when they switched from b&w to color is a long one.

Must be pure nostalgia.

hmmm, why don't white people get all mad about Superman, after all... he is an illegal alien [literally!]
Therefore he is un-American!
who knows how much money he owes for not paying his taxes!
Maybe they should deport him to Mexico?
and he is using some sort of fake SSN!
This is an outrage!
hahaha.. jk.
WiseUp89 4 years ago
Illegal aliens in the USA today don't fight crime like Superman did. Thats why!
JDtheMusicMan 4 years ago
ha, I was being sarcastic about Superman being an illegal alien [although i am right, lol]
WiseUp89 4 years ago
Sarcasm or not, in saying "white people" you're implying that white people don't want illegal aliens in the United States because illegals are not white. We allow plenty of non-white people into the USA each year, legally. Legal immigration has been shifted away from allowing mostly white Europeans to allowing more Asians and Mexicans in, especially into Calif. Our federal government should remove every illegal alien here no matter what color their skin might be.
JDtheMusicMan 4 years ago
We like to focus on Mex. & label them as scapegoats. Fear & ignorance is all the protectionists & xenophobes have to offer.
America has the greatest economy and also has the greatest amount of immigration (legal and illegal).
Learn basic economics, ^ get over your irrational fear of foreigners, because that ignorance is destroying America. Well let's stop before going off on an irrelevant topic
WiseUp89 4 years ago
Yes I'm a protectionist. I want to protect my country from those who do not respect our immigration laws. We already have very liberal LEGAL immigration allowances. It's not too much to ask foreigners to respect our laws and wait your turn to immigrate here.
JDtheMusicMan 4 years ago
Superheroes didn't have to be beautiful and perfect in the 1950's the entire show was about how important one's character was - not one's appearance. I love Superman just the way he was. God rest his soul.

52 color episodes were filmed, beginning with the third season (1954-'55), but were not SEEN in color until 1966.
fromthesidelines 4 years ago
On the color thing, let me say that Bonanza was the first "network" show to be broadcasted in color in 1959. The reason for that was that Nbc also owned RCA & wanted to sell more color tvs. The half hours shows you mentioned were not network shows, but syndicated shows. I hope, that clears everything up.

When Geo. Reeves first stared in Superman in 1951 , he looked very young, but aged quite a bit,so in 1957 (his last yr as Superman) he looked quite old. I heard he had quite a wild private life.
