The lack of theme worries me as I know I am getting this for Christmas. :/
But the "concern" over half-naked people...REALLY? I am an American, but I have never had a problem with nudity (other than my extra ugly 23 pounds - only a few of those are my head!!!) and just don't understand people who feel that nudity is not family friendly. I would MUCH rather worry about the amount of violence that our society considers acceptable versus seeing a boob or two. Sheesh.
I'll never get used to the prude american way of seeing life. Is it about sex? nope! then what's wrong for children? I agree with someone else here who says it's dry, mechanical and that's why it's not family friendly. You also don't scold your young 'uns for liking "cash 'n' guns"
Please don't use the christian card - I'll warn you in advance: you'll recieve the Maria Magdalena card back....and that one trumps the christianity card :-p
@koningwoning - I do understand I'm falling over a VERY small part of the review though. Thanks for the comprehensible review... If not for this, I would have thought to go out & buy it cause the mechanics look good by themselves
@koningwoning Well it's just how some people perceive nudity content in relation to their children I guess. I don't understand it either and I couldn't care less for half nudity for my children... but hey who am I to say how someone should raise his kids.
I've seen good and neutral reviews of this game so far. It looks nice but I'll certainly try it out before adding it to my "buy it" list. Thanks for another great review.
@ErmineskinCreelov- Are you serious, so you're ok with violence and murder, bun not nudity for your children? This is one of the most ignorant comments I have seen on here. What's worse is that nine other naive minds have joined your thought process. I wouldn't let your children read up on other cultures in the world, seeing how most places are not as repressed as we are.
Tom, I've watched your excellent speech of introducing boardgames in class. You said one of the biggest hates that you have is that the general public look at boardgames is only played by children. Surely to change peoples perception of this image is to make games which introduce adult themes for adult gamers which would also have adult images in the game. Not every game has to be made for the whole family, i think it is good thing for games that are designed to be played for adults only.
The artwork of the gods/goddesses is gorgeous...I'm a huge mythology fan, so I'd be tempted to buy the game just for the cards. If you ever found a great Greek mythology game with the theme and storytelling being really strong, let me know!
The time tracker thing seems interesting but it seems like if you waited a while to do one giant super push it would just be really really good maybe. As for the art, as it's Greek based that was no surprise but looks like I'll have to try it first.
I'm fine with violence and murder, but a boob or a bum is just not right. Why do these European socialist game designers want to warp innocent minds? Think of the children please.
@ErmineskinCreelov : There's just a big difference in the perception of nudity and violence between Europe and the US. Here in Europe, it's quite the opposite - we're cool with nudity but violence gets heavily edited in movies, magazines, etc. and we kind of wonder of you getting that exhausted with the slightest lick of nudity...no offense here, that's just the way it is.
Horus Heresy uses a similar time track to control turn order. It works real well in that game do to two players and being more integrated into the theme.
Guys, I think you should eventualy change your rating system. Zero to two thumbs either up or down just mess things up! :p Give dice, dice towers or something appropriate instead!
I actually found the game pretty interesting. Although I do agree it feels mechanical with the whole "time unit" mechanism. It is a decent game, and I prefer it over Small World (but then again I don't really like Small World). I've only played Olympos 2 or 3 times, but it starts to feel samey after a while. Good if you really love the theme and mechanics, but otherwise it is a try before you buy.
Problem with this game is that it looks like it should be a good game, but I don't think it'll hit our table again after my friends summed up this entire review with the same comments. I wish I could like it, but it does fall flat.

Crockett and Tubbs would never play this, probably

Children don't give a damn about nudity, not to mention mild nudity.
they don't even know why it shouldnt be appropriate for them to see a naked body.
it's the adults who make a fuss of it
Even Michelangelo's Last Judgment was offensive to some people and they had pants painted all over it
if you think about it, whatever moral process turned our very appearance into something inconvenient doesnt make sense

@gasol18, @lfcnaken...more unfortunate victims of Poe's Law.

@gasol18 Ermineskin was being sarcastic. He was pointing out how ridiculous it is to say this isn't family friendly because of some nudity.
onesagotoomany 2 months ago
How about it's not family-friendly because it's a dry, somewhat boring, civ engine game. I have no problem with nude deities in a family game.
