Here's a movie that was science fiction with characters and a storyline grounded in urban reality (things science fiction films are claimed to never have) but failed while Avatar and Transformers make millions but are hated and diminish the entire genre's reputation. This film's financial failure was an absolute sacrilege and an example of, despite what Hollywood thinks, whether a movie is a hit or a flop is a crapshoot.
It's funny this was their prediction of what the year 1999 would be like (mind you this came out in 1995) wire tripping, poverty, everyone's a criminal, decomposed city, looks like the end of days.
The 90s was a boom time for movies. People get nostalgic about the music or the rave scene or the "innocent" time before 9/11, but the reason I sometimes want to rewind 20 years is the experience of seeing these movies at the theatre for the first time. And even though the "future event" that it revolves around came and went over a decade ago, this film still holds up as a classic sci-fi/cyberpunk flick.
(Though I do smirk a little at the term "jacked in". It almost sounds quaint these days.)
I used to watch this movie in the days before New Year for every year since 1999 not only because the movie is good and full of year's end ambiance but also because the images of celebration like that of a soldier being hold by a girl like this is it and there may be nothing after that night, and how about those cool lines like -paranoid enough- or -short notice-, anyway I own it now so I can resume my little pre New Year tradition and by the way I also have the MiniDisc Player,… still works!
@landocobos I love the "Hard to believe right? All this shit caused by a random traffic stop." and "Cheer up, man, the world's gonna end in ten minutes anyway."
... The reason "Strange Days" was underrated by the Mainstream is because it was a warning of things to come... here we are year 2010 soon 2011... open your window, watch the news, read the headlines... are you f**king kidding me? it's no wonder this film was labelled "worthless" by the corrupt media... If you want something to wonder about- wonder how this film was ever allowed to have been created in the first place.
I have to say that I really like how well this movie did at avoiding the common scifi trope of portraying a future that looks dated within a few years of the movie's release. Sure, some of the haircuts are a tad out of date, but for the most part everyone in this movie would look normal walking down the street today, and the SQUID headset is the only piece of future tech we see. It's not like Robocop where in the far future we can build a cyborg, but TV's have vacuum tubes in them again.
While attending a conference in L.A. my friends and I accidentally walked onto a closed set in Chinatown while a scene from this movie was being filmed. Security allowed us to stay and watch. It was my only Hollywood filming experience and it was very exciting!
Yep, this was the only preview I saw before it came out and it really worked. I like it when they don't show all the best parts of a movie during the preview, I just want to see a taste.
It failed (tongue-in-cheek) so the writer and the director--husband and wife--could learn from their experience and go on with their separate lives to compete against each other later for the best picture of the year Oscar at the Academy Awards in 2010 (Avatar--James Cameron and The Hurt Locker--Katherine Bigelow).
Strange Days is underrated masterpiece - unique storyline, great acting, directing, producing...
Ralph Fiennes (Lenny Nero) is always brilliant no matter it's comedy, drama or sci-fi movie. Angela Bassett did a great job as well. The final kiss scene was so sweet.
I don't know why but this film reminds me another underrated SCI-FI/Action movies of the 90's - The Lawnmower Man, Johnny Mnemonic, Deathline (Redline), New World Disorder, Futuresport, Barb Wire......
I had completely forgot about the Imdb -- thanks. My reason for thinking it may have been an inside joke was based on how simple it would be to consider circumventing the pride of retaining the family ancestral name by simply having the Screen Actors Guild (SAG in the US) to simply change the spelling slightly to "cox". Then again, it may not be that big deal for the guy ( or gal) -- or it's some sort of British thing . If that's the case, my apologies to the unfortunate Mr. Cocks. :)
You're wondering how this movie failed? It failed because people are assholes. They probably wouldn't recognize a good movie if it bit them in the ass. But I agree. Awesome actors, awesome script, AWESOME MOVIE!!!
@FoxyAffection Definitely man. Many people think this is a D movie. But, I always found it fascinating I don't know why. And then when you get to see the oscars. The really good movies don't get anything. Thris is just Bull$#@%.
You are right man. They don't make Films like in the 80's and 90's. Now they just make movies to get franchises.
As far as I am concerned this is (Film) good example of the kind Science Fiction that keeps you and leaves you thinking. And I was just 11yrs old =b
Fantastic movie, fantastic soundtrack.

I could be wrong here but I think the music at the end is a (Swedish?) band called Misery Loves Co.

Does anyone know if there's a story behind the second name? It seems a little too obvious for it to be real.
