even though i AM a HUGE dallas cowboys fan, i actually enjoy seeing the colts win superbowl v if for no other reason than because the colts wanted so BADLY to avenge their defeat at the hands of the new york jets in superbowl III and i can only imagine that the GREAT johnny unitas (#19) DID NOT want to be remembered as "not being able to win the big one." the same could also be said for earl morral (#15) and bubba smith. GREAT superbowl, i only WISH i could have been an adult back in 1971.
The complete game is not out ther as a complete broadcast, there is about a 30 or so minute segment though. It's as clear as if it was being played live.....includes the Unitas to Mackey tipped TD pass.
@6400az Yeah, the guy I get games from only has the 2nd quarter. There has to be a complete game somewhere. Shit they just found a copy of Super Bowl I. Well, 3 quarters of it anyway.
I'd love to see this game. I love games with defense, sloppy play, and a ton of turnovers
Yea me too. Tell me , what do you think of the Unitas , tipped TD pass to Mackey. To me, it ranks up there as one of the most electrifying moments in the Superbowl.....even after more than 40 years. In the original broad cast game, Curt Gowdy is talking about how "everything is going wrong for the Colts at this point.....just like 2 years ago". Two plays later....WHAM !!
@6400az I've never heard Curt Gowdy's call of that. I just see it on NFL Super Bowl highlights, and always remember John Facenda saying "Once, in a great while, the clouds of chance will overshadow the plans of men. Such was the case in Super Bowl V"
The Colts played a horrible game, but that pass changed everything. The Cowboys might've been up 13-0 at halftime. I really wanna see the full game
Yep ,Gowdy says it. Right at the very beginning on the original broadcast tape. The 1st half ended with the Colts bypassing a FG and going for it from the goal line but where stopped. The very 1st play of the second half, they fumbled the kickoff and Dallas recoverd. This was almost identical to what happened in SB III.
@6400az Yeah, Matte fumbles on the 1st play of the 2nd half in SB III and Turner kicks a FG making it 10-0. The Colts blew Super Bowl 3. 4 INTS insdie The Jets 20. 3 in the endzone or on the goal line. Morrall choked that away.
I guess he played better in SB V. I know Unitas's numbers in SB V were terrible. I think he was 3-9 with 2 INTS and 88 yards passing. 75 of them on Mackey's tipped TD. And he fumbled once that I know of.
Yes, and also on the last play of the 1st half was the flea flicker, where Jimmy Orr was wide open. Morral was as awefull as one can get in SB III, but he did show up for V though. Unitas was having as bad a day in #V as Morral in # III
Incredibly, the same type of luck befeld the Vikings in both Superbowl 8 and 9. They screw up at the very end of the 1st half and then immediately at beginning the 2nd half. You remember those?
@6400az Yeah. The Vikings were outmatched in Super Bowl VIII for sure though. They should've went for the 3 points instead of trying to convert 4th down before the half.
In SB IX, The Vikings had a great chance but Tarkenton threw too high for Gilliam, Blount Glen Edwards killed him, and Blount picked it off before the half. The could've been up 3-2 or 7-2 receiving the 2nd half kick off. Bill Brown fumbling that kickoff was the turning point in that game since Pitt scored a TD went up 9-0
Oh yea, they where just hammered in each of their appearances. With the exception of the 1st drive in SB IV, and a few plays of defense at the beginning of SB IX, they could'nt do a thing.
Before the Gilliam play, the Vikings also had the ball inside the Steeler 25 in the 1st half , they then proceded to march backwards and ended up missing a FG.
@6400az Oh man, Fred Cox was garbage. After The Vikes blocked the punt for a TD, with 10 minutes to go in the 4th quarter, he missed an extra point LOL!
The Vikings had a chance against The Steelers. I still think Larry Brown fumbled the ball. It was coming loose before he hit the ground.
In SB XI The Vikes had a chance to take the early lead, afte a blocked punt, but McClannahan fumbled on the 1. Why Foreman doesn't get the ball there is still a mystery to me
Cox was awefull. First noticed his inneptnes in that 70' playoff loss to the 49ners. Aside from the short KO and missed chip shots. His specialty was the extra point. From 74' to 77' he missed a total of 17 !!
Made something like 2 of 24 outside the 50. In SB IX he showcased his talent.Missed a short FG, the PAT after Blair's blocked punt, then proceded with a short KO. Immediately, the Steelers where back in business.
The Mclanahan fumble...jeeeez. Puts the T in tragic !!
@6400az It's amazing to think The Vikings have NEVER scored a point, in the 1st half in The Super Bowl. They were behind EVERY game
IV down 16-0 to KC
XIII down 17-0 to Mia
IX down 2-0 to Pitt
XI down 16-0 to Oak
They turned the ball over countless times as well. I don't get it, I mean yeah they ran into some great teams, but they played so poorly they would've lost to anyone on those days.
Precisely!! When I mention how bad they where in the SB. I'm reminded how I'm not recognizing the credit of the opponent. But in the case of the Vikings ....they where just God awefull. They would've lost to ANYONE. They beat every team in the reg. season, and where atop the league for a decade, not like it was a flash in the pan, but come January and now they can't play.
Saw all 4 SB's and they looked worse than in their 1st preseason game.
@6400az Yeah man, great teams, or not, The Vikings played like shit. They may have still lost, but the games would've been a lot closer had they played well. Honestly, the ONLY one of their 4 Super Bowl losses where I feel they didn't have a chance was agaisnt the 1973 Dolphins.
They should've beat KC, and Pitt, and could've beat Oakland.
The game against Pitt they really could've had 1:40 in the half Tark throws the pick off of Gilliam, and then 2nd half kickoff Bill Brown fumbles.
@GialloHorror I mean The Vikes could've been up 3-2 or 7-2 at the half, getting the 2nd half kickoff. If they don't fumble, maybe Pittsburgh doesn't score that TD. Even the safety was garbage. Osbourne, never even looked for the ball. There had to be a mix up there. I remember Meredith saying he thought Fran wanted to fake the toss, and the ball slipped out of his hand.
Maybe even 14-2 as they did have he ball inside the Steeler 25 early in the 1st quarter.........they ended with " O " points.
I've never heard of that reasoning by Meredith, but it was a weird exchange no doubt. It certainly is a posibility since the ball may have been wet, but like you say Osborne never even looked for the ball.
I would agree with that, the Dolphins where the toughest team they ever faced. Had they played to their capability they could have won the others. The mistakes they made,,,, one after the next after the next.It was unbelivable. An the patterns and similarities between each game is mind boggling. Do you know that in each of their last 3 SB's they fumbled at, or inside the 6 yard line !!
@6400az Yeah I knew about them fumbling inside teh 6 btu I don't think 2 of them really mattered. I mean, in SB VIII it was 4th and inches, and The Vikes got stopped short anyway. The fumbled ball ended up in 1st down territory, but again why wasn't foreman handling the ball there? In SB IX Foreman did fumble the ball at the 2, but then Matt Blair blocked the punt for the TD so the fumble didn't really cost them.
The one against The Raiders hurt bad. They should've been up 7-0 for sure
Your right, but the point I wanted to make was the consistent pattern of Vikings SB mistakes.Even Foreman, was'nt imune to fumbling.
I know against the Steelers,Foremans' fumble led to the blocked punt. But still, a fumble at the 1 yrd line is still demoralizing to a team. The fumble in SB VIII, could have led to something.I hear what your saying about being stopped short, but if Reed hangs on, maybe his momentum carries him to a 1st down. Being down 17-0, had to go for a TD
@6400az Definitely true about being demoralizing at the one, especially when you just got a big penalty that went in your favor. Miami really killed you guys though. Kind of ironic, you guys fumbled inside the 6, 3 times, in 3 different Super Bowls by 3 different running backs. What are the odds of that? Plus Charlie West fumbled a kick off return at like the 15.
The fumble in SB XI killed you guys the most I think, but SB IX was there for the taking. Larry Brown fumbled but wasn't called
Everything the Vikings did was somehow bad. After the blocked punt TD, Cox promplty missed the etra point. THAT is demoralizing,I'd take 2 FG rather than a td and missed PAT.
The Charlie West fumble was a disaster, very similar to he Bill Brown muff in SB IX. In both cases they happened because of a short KO and both led to TD's. It was THAT fumble that led to the 65 toss power trap play.
The Brown fumble, NFL Films shows the ball comig out 1 frame beore his butt hits the turf.
@6400az HAHA at Larry Brown! You're EXACTLY right! I've slowed that thing down, numerous times, and stopped it when that ball comes out. It is one frame!
Still, 2 officials called it a fumble, and then Ed marion comes from across the field and overrules them. The fans were pissed!
Fred Cox sucked LOL! He missed FG in SB IX too that would've put The Vikings up 3-0.
The Vikes really should've won SB 9. Bradshaw only had like 94 yards passing. Franco had the big game with 158yds rushing
A lot of people focus on he Steeler defense, and how they dominated, but the Vikings left at least 2 TD's on the field that day.Harris, did get his yards , but he had close to 40 carries. The Brown call came at the worse possible moment, right after the blocked punt TD. Cox.... oh God !! He was awefull, but never more so than in SB IX. He was 2 of 24 career, from outside the 50. From 74 to 77 , he missed 17 extra points !!! Also missed many last second FG's.
@6400az Cox should've stuck to being a chiropractor lol!
The Steelers D was great that day, but The Vikes still had their chances. I do think if The Vikings went up in that game that they would've won. Bradshaw was still not great, at that point, and I think if he had the pressure on him, of leading a Steelers comeback they would've fallen short.
Bradshaw really gained conifdence after SB IX, and his career took off
I think he shoud have. That IS the game that made Bradshaws career go, no doubt. He was considered un predictable beofore. Made great plays here and there but screws up on many occasions. If the Vikings go up and the Steelers have to play catch up, it's a whole new ball game.
My absolute favorite Superbowl, you gotta hand it to the Colt veterans...(and a bunch of youngsters too) for coming back after the SB III disaster. Ironically, ALL of their points came directly (or indirectly) as a result of a tipped ball.
In this video, the narration is an obvious attempt, not just to replace BUT, too duplicate John Facenda's voice. Cardinal sin for long -time NFL fans!
No way was this the worst ever. A number of the NFC's 13 consecutive Super Bowl wins would easily trump this, especially the blowouts. At least this game was competitive, albeit mistake-rridden.
