I second Rice's comments about N.T. Wright. I have been reading his works lately and am impressed by his scholarship and the elegance of his theory of the historical Jesus, which accomplishes what some other writers on the subject have failed to do - present a Jesus that both fits well into the proper historical context and makes sense of, and is made sense of by, the Gospels.
