Ping pong balls are coated with a substance called Cellulosetrinitrate (Nitrocellulose is wrong trivialname ..), in vernacular also called gun cotton. If its set on fire it burns very fast, without leaving any ash. You can also bring it to an explosion if you heat it under pressure, or with initialization through a more sensitive explosive.
