I think its fair cop to say Richie Hawtin is very very very successful. Is he overrated, I don't think so, but I find a lot of his Plastikman released to sound percussively like he just drew the drums into a drum map.

Is it a matter of taste, probably, and theres a lot of conceptual stuff going on behind his work, which brings together the release form (i.e arkives) and artwork.

Richie Hawtin as DJ, I would like to see, he is a great DJ.

But TBH I found plastikman live a bit boring.

You could call it elitism. With 22 ups and one down, people obviously understand my point. Obviously you are either are not listening enough, or you are simply not able to hear the nuances.

I'm the fool, yet you can not differentiate the percussive rhythms and 1/32, 1/64, and 1/128 swings and offbeats in the Plastikman moniker.

When it comes down to it, your problem is that you do not understand or hear what is different about Hawtin's work. That's not my fault.

July 29th at Foundation, there's a video on You Tube you can watch the sound quality is rather poor though. I also saw him at the Quest a few years prior to that I believe that Quest has a different name now. Both great shows.

He is an icon to many of us, but it hasn't gone to his head. A few weeks ago I called to him from across the street in NYC on his way out of LOVE. He walked right over and talked briefly. I hope I'll have an opportunity to speak with him again.

While the bass gets all the glory and most of the budget it's the distortion and blare from that stack of 'Frank's Brand' speaker horns doing all the damage. When you are young it's difficult to understand permanent. If you have a scar do you think the scar will just disappear? If you lose parts of your hearing at 25, it'll still be gone at 85. I always wore earplugs at every concert, gig, practice law mowing etc.

@RhythmDroid No, he's right and he means what he says and says what he means. I came to techno from other genres like prog rock and metal (believe it or not) and I still like artists from all of them. It's not that hard. The only person who can limit a person is themself.

If it needs the intellect, then call it something else..."sound art" or whatever. My original point is the same as your last statement: The attitude "Techno is only for those who understand" doesn't keep people OUT of techno, it keeps people IN the techno tower locked up in a prison of their own making. The plastikman stuff is worth listening to, particularly from the 90's. But he started getting into that de facto standard 4/4 beat techno music, and it's so incredibly boring.

I guess I grew out of it.

Sure you may not like loopy, minimal beats, that's your taste. Truth be told, I haven't bought much from him in last few years as it can be a bit mundane. I do however give respect when it's due. He's one of the movements god fathers. Not the original, but he was there early and made his mark durring the "first wave". To me overrated would be giving him all the props with nothing back. Last I checked dudes booked all the time.

Saw Richie in Osaka, Japan for the first time in 2001 and watched him do a live set without switching out the records. Obviously he was using Final Scratch / Serato and it baffled me to see it in action.
