  • These are three incidents and I'm sure there are more. But they don't out number the incidents where people are saved and helped dispite their personal choices. This looks to be more propaganda than news. I'd like to see follow up to those incidents where more likely than not people were held responsible for their inhumanity. Most Americans wouldn't stand for these actions, and wouldn't allow isolated stupidity to set their opinions.

  • Where I live we have a law. You are legally required to assist in any way you can. You can never be held liable for helping, even if you do it wrong and actually cause a problem. The only exception would be if more qualified people identify themselves and you refuse to step aside for them.

    However we are told at forst aid training to walk away if we see something happen in the US. Do nothing is the advise then.

  • I thought that the property taxes people pay to there towns and cities , were for setting up services for the community .such as police , fire and rescue , so on .

  • @timrowe28 With the case of the fire department, the fire department is in one state and the area where the fire happen is in another state. So the city/county offered fire services to the people across the state line for a fee since they don't pay taxes to their state or city/county. I remember this story from about a year ago. The area across the state line is a rural area with maybe few 100 people living near the border.

  • Even though it is sad that their house burned down, I don't understand why they wouldn't pay a 75 dollar yearly fee to protect their home from fires. That's like 6 dollars a month. They can't expect a service for free when other people have to pay for it. Seeing how the fire department relies on taxpayer money, if people received free service, others would also expect it and just stop paying. Then down goes the fire department and everybody's home would burn down.

There's been a sea-change in American ethics and morality in just 1 generation; the boomers sold out. Result: their children don't have the same moral or ethical principles as the generation which raised the boomers.

    The firemen stayed at the scene of the incident so as to ensure that PAYING customers of their services were not affected by the fire. They thank all those kindly for their patronage, reminded them when their next bill was due, praised capitalism and libertarianism then promptly departed once the fire had taken its course.

  • They told the man that if he doesn't pay the 75$ service charge each year then the fire department wouldn't come and help in an emergency. the man agreed to this and didn't pay. An accident occurs and he goes to the news to claim he's been cheated, the system if against him, blah blah blah. he refused the service for years. it's his fault. It's like not paying auto insurance and then knocking on State Farms headquarters and asking them for a new car when you get in an accident.

    I understand what you're saying here, but the larger point of what's happening in Tennessee and elsewhere in America, is that the business of putting out fires isn't just an issue involving one man's responsibility to himself. It's a greater societal issue. The business of putting out fires is a collective need and is part of the the "Commons". That's why in wealthy democracies, police/fire/ambulance is publicly funded, so everyone's covered.

  • @icarus313 it is the exact same thing in america only it isn't a tax, its a seperate charge and the firefighters didn't just watch it burn, they made sure everything around him like other properties who actually paid for their services were safe which is exactly what they are supposed to do. Suppose firefighters had tried saving his house without him paying for the service they can be found liable for damages and the guy could easily be a dick and sue them out of spite...

    ...Except if this exact scenario had played out in a different country (or even just a different US state) the result would have been a man who still had a house. One less person who's life is destroyed. One less person requiring assistance to get back on their feet. The question still remains: if the concern is over being sued for helping, why is this not an issue everywhere else? Answer: because the taxes pay for the entire thing, and thus, all fires are put out.

  • @icarus313 what does it matter what could happen? this is what happened and regardless of his reasons he chose not to protect himself and his property and that's his choice and responsibility. The only reason that paying for the fire department with tax dollars is better is because people can't not pay for protection. Some counties apparently want more individualized payments or something where they can choose which services they want and it's their right to choose to do so.

    I can't think of a single instance in modern history of any major group who rose up and declared "This taxpayer-funded fire protection stinks! I demand the right to opt out and pay for my own fire protection!" Those are two sentences I don't think I've ever heard anyone say! This has very little to do with people's "rights to opt out" and everything to do with creating a functional society where we don't let buildings burn down for stupid reasons.

I'm not disagreeing with a tax funded fire department that is clearly the better system. All I stated was that this man, in this area, where this is the law, has no right to complain in anyway, unless he's proposing a change to the laws of his county, as for the damages to his home that was his fault.

  • Are these people not already paying property taxes by law?Road construction and maintenance and local government staff salaries within the community are all things that are paid for with your tax dollars. Any municipal employees, such as police, fire fighters, and the local public works department are also paid through your property taxes. SO WTF?

  • Paying the local fees is part of the RESPONSIBILITY for owning a home. CHOOSE not to pay, CHOOSE to take the CONSEQUENCES for your DECISION. Stuff happens - that's why we have insurance, and that $75 is a form of insurance.

  • You could sue them if they gave you an opinion they would come to somewhat help, knowing they would deny action when arriving.

    Regarding the saving of the guy in the water. Simply take the uniform off, declare your position, and act as a citizen, other words not an employee of the fire business. People should lawfully be compelled to help another's life if they have the ability and are not putting themselves in grave danger. Many nations have laws for this.

    In other countries, there is such a thing as "the Good Samaritan Law" which basically states that you can be held liable for any damages when trying to aid someone in a life and death situation. But if you had that law, then Jew lawyers would be out of work.
