"und ich mit regem Blute sah die Betrogne an." is the pointe. Compare the hunter (=aristocrat) motif in romantism and the sexual connotations. Political interpretations are too straight, a trout is female. Usually it gets "censored" or "compromised", cmp. Wildwood Flower.

She is wonderful!! and her German perfect... except for the occassional "ish" sound instead of "ich." Its difficult to sing ich though.

@lazingarella i would not complain about her gernam she was a german singer most of her life ;) and the "ish" is kind of typical for an "austrian german" ... which by the way the componist also was ;)

@swanningaround British nobles apparently chose a German accent, but German nobles don't share an accent. Not even an Austro-Hungarian one. It is simply false and she switches to the artificial Eastern pronounciation to add force in the repetition. Fine, but that's not "sehr klar", that's not German. She also reflects a stupid singing tradition where "munter" has to feel "munter", cmp. Prey where it gets awful.

@Reichstempler OK. I'll take your word for it. I speak a little German. As for dialects and regional accents etc., I have limited knowledge. I do understand what she is sayng here. You seem to object to her style of singing here, rather than the quality of her voice.

@swanningaround You are right, she is a fantastic singer and its a Kunstlied, an art song, and art changes. Her moralising interpretation doesn't suit the song well, but that is a matter of taste and history of artistic singing. Yes, I prefer a pre-war or contemporary interpretation, and it is a song for a man.

@Reichstempler I'm not a fluent German speaker so the accent you refer to is probably lost on me, but Schwartzkopf came from Jarotschin in East Prussia (now Jarocin, Poland) so any Eastern accent she had she certainly came by legitimately.

It's funny to see how many singers get this lied completely wrong and sing it like a puccini aria, which is a desaster if you ask me. But it's wonderfull to hear this peace so light and musical from Ian Bostrige, or here Scharzkopf. It's like a delicious small chocolaty thing.

The fisher is described as having cold blood (mit kaltem Blute)and called tu"ckisch (=false, underhand) because he can only catch the trout by muddying the water, i.e. by using a cheap trick. The persona/narrator watches with "regem Blute" (something like quickened blood), meaning he/she is upset! This is practically an ode to vegetarianism :)

For a translation that really sticks to the original German google: "singyourenglish emily ezust" Here's the final part: "But finally the thief grew weary of waiting. HE stirred up the brook and made it muddy, and before I [=narrator!] realized it, HIS fishing rod was twitching: the fish was squirming there, and with raging blood I gazed at the betrayed fish." Transl:: Emily Ezust Hope this helps.
