My nephew had a doll when he was very young (he was born in 1949) and he used to hug the doll and sing the chorus over and over again....this has brought such happy memories for me :) I think it was probably The Weavers' singing it that was popular at that time...but this rendition was lovely...thank you for posting.
@BeulahMaeBlues he is not the original artist. he was the first one to record it but its an old folk song from the late 1800's. He most likely learned it in prison.

My dad always sang this to my mom because her name was Irene. I remembered it again lately when I discovered one of my student's name was Irene too.

A great version. One musicologist has placed the roots of this song as far back as the 1880's or 90's.
