One of the most influential metal bands in the world right now named Avenged Sevenfold has a lot of Metallica and Pantera in there music. As an addendum to my previous post, Evile wins massive respect from me for making a song that has that Big Metal Boom sound to it and they do it in E standard; It was good enough for Metallica and Megadeath, and it's good enough for Evile too.

Bands sounded similar in the 80s, and times certainly haven't changed. Evile has a polish to their album that makes it sound like something pulled straight out of Death Magnetic, and yet it's still their own thing.
