I first saw him on Austin City Limits about 25 years ago. Thought he was stoned then but he still sounds the same today so maybe it's just him. Great player!
First saw Leo in Southern California in 1979. It seems he has aged like the rest of us, although his music is like fine wine. just gets better with age.
Leo's guitar technique and composition skill and creativity are absolutely incredible. His voice is fine, there's nothing wrong with it, but it just doesn't hold up next to his guitaring. I prefer to listen to his "instrumentals" 8^)
Thanks for posting these, and thanks to Leo for all of this brilliant music.
I'm sorry if you thought I was cutting down Leo's voice. I was only pointing out his own evaluation of his singing ability. I'm 26 and have been listening to him since I was very young and I thouroughly enjoy his guitar and his singing.
No worries man, I didn't think you were cutting on him, but even if you were you're entitled to your opinion :P I just discovered Kottke about a month ago, and I'm very surprised that I hadn't ever heard of him before. Since realizing how badass his music is, pretty much the only thing I've done is attempt to play it over and over :P I have a ticket to see him live in a few weeks, and I'm STOKED. Take it easy George, and long live Kottke!
I am jealous! It's great that at 63 yrs old Leo is still performing, though not with the speed and skill he had at 23. I find it sad that he is reduced to mostly playing festivals and fairs - small shows where people don't really appreciate his music - because he is not exactly what you would call a commercial success.
Not so... Even tho I saw him at Bonnaroo and with Jesse Collin Young in 73, he has always played 2-300 halls. From the mishawaka to many opera houses. Totally different when he opened for String Cheese, and when he plays a hall.. Always great tho
Thank you so much for posting these, carpethead.I sat down on a dark winter evening with a few cans of beer and some nibbles and watched all of them. Thank you again.
What is wrong with those folks who keep getting up and moving around? are they not in awh of a master when they see one ...have some respect. Kottke diserves to play in better surroundings maybe
I agree, but this event was in the middle of a park with no chairs, and everybody was just sitting down on big blankets listening, and eating dinner. But me personally, I was "all ears" the entire time!
lol... I think the guy who stands up alot has kids? Well, can't blame him for that.. actually he sat back down until I think the wife made him leave! Damn... my kids would be listening!... okay maybe they would be tied up (just kidding)...my daughters coming around.. I'm teaching her guitar and she's realizing how HARD it is!

Absolutely beautiful. Saw him twice in the Twin Cities area years ago, and there's no one like him that I've heard. Open for suggestions though...

In the notes for his first album Leo compared his singing voice to "goose farts on a muggy day" I think it has actually improved with age ;-P
