@dagsy1940 The V-1 that hit near my home landed in Freeman Ave. I lived on Glynde Ave. it caused utter devastation. I'm looking at the bombed out bus in the video. I don't think that is a London Transport bus, but can't make out the markings on the side. Seems though a red bus would appear darker than this. The window surrounds are creme coloured could be an Eastbourne Corporation or Southdown. I know one of the terminals or both took a hit.
@MOGGYWW These old documentaries mean well but can get flawed. Example: at 0:14 a sharp eye spots the American insignia on this V1, meaning it's probably a Republic JB-2 'Loon', an exact copy of the Doodlebug, but not quite the real thing. Same as with the 'bombed out building' scene. Probably damage from anything but a V1.
my grandfather was an American solider stationed in London during the blitz... he told me you didnt worry about the V 1 as long as you could hear it... but as soon as the noise stopped that was the time to look for shelter.....
I love the way these news reports always say "bombing London"! The Germans bombed the stuff out of all of southern England, my hometown took a lot of devastation. I was only 6 years old but still remember it all very well. I had one of these V-1's hit a block away and created utter devastation. Only by a miracle my Mother, Sister and I survived uninjured even. The local paper wrote an article about "The Miracle in Hampden Park"
@MOGGYWW I was a kid born 1938 and lived in Eastbourne, so you'd know it well. Eastbourne has been officially designated the most bombed town on the south coast. I too remember the doodlebugs.
My Mums sister is in Crawley crescent hampden park.
I´m desperately trying to put on a musical in my city, Florianópolis - south Brazil, using the war theme through the angle of the radio musical programmes. I'm phocusing London BBC Radio, Rio de Janeiro Radio Nacional and a local radio at the time Rádio Guarujá de Florianópolis.
I hope to make this dream come true someday.
See the video: Sérgio Lima e Silva - "Tempos de Guerra e Paz" about it.
@1276epr the proximity fuse was effective against the V2. Although the most effective defense was by British intelligence. Germany relied on information from spies in London reporting where they hit the ground to adjust later V2's guidance systems. What the Germans didn't know was these spies had been turned and where supplying false information. This help reduce the damage from both the V1's & V2's. Although only 25% of V1's hit their targets they killed 22000, mostly civilians.
@binaway that's interesting. isn't it claimed that Germany spent an enormous amount of resources on the V-1s and V-2s that could have been utilized more productively on conventional weapons?
@1276epr I recently read an interesting book that condemned the Nazi's who ran the German economy. Regional Nazi leaders being political appointees caused Spears a lot of trouble. Civilian goods were still produced in & night shifts didn't start until 1943 using imported labor. Nazi doctrine wouldn't allow woman into factories. Hitler thinking the Soviets had been defeated reduced production in 1941. Britain the smallest of the 3major allies produced more aircraft and tanks than Germany
@binaway I've heard that too. Part of it stems from them having those quick victories in '39 and '40 and all the easy loot/consumer goods that flowed into Germany thereupon. There never was a shortage of ego among the leadership. Shirer tells about an interesting conversation he had with Goering wherein Goering more or less blew off any possible threat from the States. 'Despite what happened the last time?". "Yeah---despite that", Goering said and laughed.
@1276epr Goering also said to Rommel "the Americans only know how to make razor blades" at a time the RAF desert force was destroying Rommel's tanks with American made 40mm shells fired from American made aircraft and American Sherman's were beginning to arrive for Montgomery's army
@binaway fortunately for the Allies, most of the Nazi leadership had little knowledge, respect nor interest in foreign cultures. Even though a fair number of them had some education, most had never travelled much, didn't know any different languages, and the only way to advance within their system was to parrot their Leader's prejudices and squirrely ideas.
@binaway The hawker hurricane and the supermarine spitfire aren't american, and neither was their ammunition. We were a pretty industrial nation, and understood the convenience of making cannon shells in our own factories. The 8th AF were using british aircraft at this time however.
Yes, you are right, if I wasn't Aryan. I have the blonde hair, blue eyes, at 6'3" this will be the height I will stay at, so they would have ranked me up very quickly, lol. I wasn't being serious, and everyone is equal in my eyes, I'm just saying the idiot Nazis would have accepted me as high-rank, and I would have enjoyed the services, hehe! :P
Oh yeah for sure. They're from a mild climate where it rains fairly frequently, and they come up to a wall of mountains where you can't even see the top, and it's like -40F! Lol, that was kind of an ill-fated way to look at your job outline. Well, at least they were all tweakers. They was like, "ugh, I'll suck yo dick for a rock, nigga!" LOL!! That shit was funny.
They invaded Poland... In first part of II WW Russia and Germany were collaborating - it's called MolotovRibbentrop Pact. After 1941 Germany attacked Russians. The miastakes were - 1. Attacking Poland, 2. Attacking Russians. If Germany started with, for instance, France, they would propably win the war, because of France surrender. Poland didn't give up and it was sign for other countries to fight.
German engineers has invented all the cool stuffs Cars, rockets, jet engines!!!

if the proximity fuse was so instrumental in combating kamikazes, why didn't it have similar results against V-1s?
