I look at all these great drummers on YouTube and it never fails that someone is arguing about which is better, traditional or match grip. From what Ive observed is that the great drummers are very fluent in both Traditional and Matched grip. If you want to be a really good drummer learn both ways. There will be a time when it will be advantage for you to be able to switch from one grip to another.

Also, Portnoy graduated from Berklee and he focused on jazz.... surely he can play traditional XD The only reason we don't see him playit is because there's no point in using the traditional grip when playing prog. rock. Some people are just idiots haha

I don't usually reply comments on youtube, since mostly that ends up in a shitfest, but since i've collected a ton of info about Dream Theater from my fanboy days from yore, i should point this out: all of the members dropped out of Berklee shortly after entering, to pursue a carreer with the band.

Portnoy actually has stated more than one time that if there's one style he CAN'T play well, it's jazz. The only one with formal graduation is Jordan Rudess (Juiliard, if i'm not mistaken).

I don't think it matters physically for a human being. Trad was born out of the way you wear a snare in a marching band, as you probably know. Stating examples has no meaning because yes, it COULD be coincidence considering your personal opinion, tradition by its own definition, as possible error sources.

When it comes down to it, physically I see no way that trad should be better. It may be just as good, have some perks even, but something born out of tradition has an obsolete design by def.

Alot more drummers today used matched. Trad looks alot cooler but it is pretty much proven to be harder to move around the kit using trad. The only reason why ppl like Buddy and Jo jo use traditional is because they're kinda old. Both are my favorite drummers but trad was really the only grip back when they were learning. If u hear famous drummers talk about which grip is better most will say to stick with matched beacuse it is alot easier to work around the kit.
