  • why not use the tank as your solar collector with mirrors put some oil on top of the water..to prevent evaporation. the copper is your hp water source to pre heat the water for your water heater.

  • I would put the coil near the bottom since the water is cooler there than at the top thereby increasing the heat flow into the cooler water. draw the hotter water off from the top just as with an ordinary electric water heater.

  • hi, if you have solar panels why are you wrapping copper coil to go into a water tank? I have a coil setup as my solar panel that runs into a normal, functioning hot water tank. Theres no need to have your coil madeup for the tank if your panels work as they should. I even have a electric booster in the tank if required.

  • @dksopals This was just an experiment, testing heat transfer from an untested, used, solar panel into some water to see how well the heat transfer would go.

The old scrap tank wasn't pressurized nor had the correct connections on it for pumping directly through it. I now have an appropriate tank with a built-in heat exchanger that will be used for my final home solar hot water system.

  • your cooper coil should not touch the tank it will act as a heat transfer and you will loose efficiency

Yes, the final version will have some sort of plastic or inert spacer to keep the coil off the bottom and sides. I was also thinking of an insulated support structure at the top that would hold all the pipes in place, and let the coils gently hang down from as well.

  • @najman100 Also, the coil should be near the top since that is where the highest temps are located.
